Two interesting groups I was told about in Sonic Frontiers:

Tupolev - Memories of Björn Bolssen

Valeot Records, 2008

http://www.myspace.com/tupolev

"in memory of bjřrn bolssen" is the first album by vienna-based tupolev. they perform instrumental compositions between classical music, electro-acoustic and jazz with glimpses of pop.

the album consists of nine slow and minimalist pieces for piano and bass on the one hand and an expanded composition ("garlic '07") for bass and electronics on the other. but the central pieces of the album are those where drums (and sometimes cello) join in to add up to the actual tupolev sound. sometimes difficult though persistently beautiful, those songs manage to make up a record to keep in your heart.

Neubau - rymdmyr
... born 1978 in Austria
... composing since the age of 12, fascinated by algorithmic composing that time and ever since then, playing whatever produces sound waves in some improvisational projects. Doing tape music.
... evermore into electronic music and the implementation of scientific models in composition.
...generally more interested in processes than outcomes - and simultaneously in the outcome, that causes process...
Nonine Recordings, 2008
Electroacoustic / Concrete / Classical

A new Hungarian (post) prog band:

Not Yet

They made an album (fakir hobby) which reminds me the sound of Jethro Tull / King Crimson / Deep Purple.
Lineup:
Gergő Gelsei - electric bass, vocals
Janó Nemes - flute, sax, guitar
Balázs Tölgyi - guitar, vocals
László Zagyva - percussion

They made a nice cover of  "I talk to the wind" (King Crimson), "Thick as a brick", "Living in the past" (Jethro Tull)

You can listen to the album and the covers here: http://notyet.hu/radio/index.html
Band web site here (only in Hungarian): http://notyet.hu/

One of the most prolific and innovative composers of our time, world renowned Guitarist and Composer George Bellas presents his latest instrumental album "Planetary Alignment". This album is so uniquely crafted that most listeners will find many composition elements they have never heard before. The style of the album is extremely modern and very progressive, it does not contain any neoclassical songs that George Bellas is also reputable for, but the album stays completely within the progressive realm.

As usually the case on George Bellas releases, George composed everything one note at a time and performed all of the instruments, plus had Drummer extraordinaire Marco Minneman perform the drum parts. Marco's drum performance's are nothing short of awe inspiring. The time signatures and rhythms contained on the album are extremely complex which Marco brought to life with his organic and immaculate drumming style. Leading guitar virtuoso George Bellas is back with his most modernly progressive solo album to date - expect the unexpected.

The concept and inspiration behind Planetary Alignment was the science of astrophysics. Each song was based on a particular subject ranging from the smallest matter known to man, to the largest and distant most objects in the universe. The goal was to compose ultra-modern music using scales, chords and rhythms not heard too often in music. The main interval the songs are all based on is the Tritone, with the root tone as middle C. It is quite a mystery where inspiration comes from when one is creating music, and it seems to only all come together when one is well practiced, emotions are stirring and the planets are aligned.

COMPOSITION ELEMENTS
CHORDS - Bitonal, Tritonal, Quartal, Quintal, Secondal, Pyramid Chord, Scriabin's Mystic Chord, Vienesse Trichords, Mother Chord, Grandmother Chord, Split Note Chords, Chord of the Minor23rd and more. RHYTHM - Odd Meters, Polyrhythms, Polymeters, Pyramid Rhythms, Fibonacci Number Series Meters, Contracting and Expanding Meters and more. SCALES - Numerous (no name) scales from Nicolas Slominski's Thesaurus, Scale of A. Therepin, Verdi's Enigmatic, Wholetone, HalfWhole, Pentatonics, Melodic Minor Modes, Harmonic Major and many more.

Planetary Alignment was initiated using only rhythmic motives, and then later on scale choices were determined while composing the melodic and harmonic content. Most of the musical elements appearing on this album have never been used on previous George Bellas albums and offer a very fresh, ultra-modern sound.
Most all of the compositions revolve around a Middle C root while employing various tritone based elements. The production on the album was kept dry and natural sounding, with effects used quite sparingly.

Expect the unexpected and enjoy listening to what may be the most progressive release by George Bellas.

I may get shot down for this, but Aconite Thrill - Recliner has some prog influences and is a very nice album :)

The rhythm section is about as solid as they come, driving everything forward underneath the stabbing and often highly technical guitar riffs. Will Jeferee’s vocals come in over the top with great power and a lot of thought for how he will sound against the music. Aconite Thrill are one of a rare bread - a metal band that stands out.

A very interesting band from France, perhaps fitting for eclectic but not sure.

The Narr project was created in November 2003, as a means for its source Clément Werner to take up with a dismissed level of reality, concealed in the veils of onirism. Narr is the telling of this journey back, far from outermost reality, from what it dares to claim, with a sheer personal and introspective basis, and the release of perception and imagination as an end. To tell this story, the compositions and the texts of Narr emanate as shapes of their own, irreverent of conformism and of the bias that rationalizes what simply is not rational – instead, they follow dreams and poetry toward density.

The interpretation of the compositions of Clément Werner (author/composer/bass player of the project) actually started in July 2004, when two other musicians joined him: Marti Ilmar Uibo on drums, and Kalevi Uibo on guitar, both of them involved in ancient music (the Tormis ensemble), in jazz (Cirque Lunaire) as well as in death metal (Bloody Sign). This reunion led to the first rehearsals, during which pieces such as “Zepter Des Narren”, “La Lyre Cornue Pleure” or “La Dune Bleue” were invoked. The unreality peculiar to the world of Narr extended to the project organization, since rehearsals remained infrequent, while Clément kept on gathering visions through words and sounds.

Throughout time, out of time, the movement “Oxymore Dans La Chrysalide Des Ręves” was composed. In July 2007, the band was invited for a week in the artists’ residence of La Condition Publique, a cultural structure located near Lille, which made the preparation for the recording sessions possible. Then, the recording process took place from September 2007 to May 2008 amidst the ancient mountains of the Vosges. The album granted the vision of Narr the echo it was longing for, unfurled by the flute parts played by Laurent Lefebvre (former member of Cirque Lunaire too, he joined Narr in October), by the vocals that Clément (for the lower and solo parts) and Marti (for the upper parts) performed, and by the experimental parts in which the musicians indulged, messengers of this reality (among others, the kannel parts – Estonian harp – and percussions such as spring drum performed by Marti). The maze is blowing its breath unto our faces, the seed of another journey…

One band that Id like to recommend is The Move, a british psych/pop band around during the later 60's. ELO fans out there should recognize these guys as that band was formed by the band members of The Move after the group was disbanded, minus the composing genius of singer/song-writer Roy Wood. During their early history they took alot of influence from the mod scene and sound pretty much like early The Who, however they quickly expanded their sound to incorporate many different styles and influences and ended up sounding much like the Beatles during the end of their career.

Album highlites include Shazam, a hard rocking progressive cut

 http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:k9fyxqw5ldae

and Message From The Country an album that incorporates rock, prog, rockabilly and country

 http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:09fyxqw5ldae

Seeing that the Beatles and The Who are both included on PA, I see no reason why these guys shouldent be. Their a great group, one of my favs, just as good as ELO which they would later evolve into. Highly recommended , I hope to see them on this site soon.

I recommend Hermann Szobel. He is not even listen on prog archives, but definitely should be. His Music is pretty intense and jazzy. Highly complex. He was only 18 when he made his album "Szobel" in 1976 which he composed completely. If you want to hear Awesome music. Check ou Hermann Szobel.

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=113006848

This is a link to his myspace. It has all 5 of his songs. One of them  you have to listen to by clicking the 12 minute video. But that song is 12 minutes of paradise. This guy is more complex than Yes, or King crimson, or even Gentle Giant. I'd say he is even more complex than the PFM, Area, and mahavisnu. Listen to all his songs, But maybe you should start with Between 7 and 11. Then Mr. Softee. Then The Szuite (the video closest to the top. *Mr. Softee gets better as it goes. Oh, also, Hermann Szobel is the pianist. The rest of the info you can get on the myspace page.

I recommend the newest Atrox album, Binocular. They sounds like White Silent Binoculars with high-intensity acoustic and digital energy.

Eroica from Boston

They have a new album called Hisen the Architect that's available for full streaming on their Myspace until the end of June.

Band members:
      Ben Gram | Guitar, Effects
   Zivi Krieger | Bass, Lights
Ben Hoffman | Drums, Glockenspiel

Great heavy, instrumental prog with touches of post-rock sounds.

Chou Pahrot Live (1979 Klub LP, produced by Pete Shipton)

Think this might be deleted now and it never appears to have been transferred to CD.

For those who may be intrigued to hear an unlikely amalgam of punky Crimson meets Bartok with some Zappaesque humour in broad Glaswegian brogue.

How can anyone resist a lineup named thus ?:

Eggy Beard - Violin

Monica Zarb - Bass, vocal

Mama Voot  - Guitar, sax, vocal

The Amphibian - Drums

Veterans of the Glasgow live pub circuit during the 70's (I just wish I had seen them)

I recommend Platypus, a prog rock supergroup featuring John Myung of Dream Theater, Rod Morgenstein of The Dixie Dregs, Ty Tabor of King's X and Derek Sherinian of Planet X. These guys put a whole new meaning to the term supergroup. The playing is amazing and the ideas are really original.

Check them out.

Many apologies if they've already been mentioned before, but I would like to recommend "Airbag" as a valid addition to this website.
I was lucky enough to see them support Gazpacho in Oslo earlier this year. Real talent. Judging by their album and EP's to date this Norwegian Psychedelic Space Rock band should easily warrant a few positive prog lines Smile

Fall Of Troy. They are a post hardcore/screamo/prog rock outfit made up of three guys with major attitudes. These guys are the next Mars Volta. The most underrated group on the archives.
