70s English prog and rock is the best. I don't care for much rock music after 1982. That's when American music took over and ever since most prog has been too influenced by american guitar music(metal and hard rock) and you don't get great melodies these days so the music doesn't really last long at all

who cares! besides, we Americans have blues, which without, rock music basically wouldnt exist, and then we also started rock itself, plus we got jazz, jazz-fusion, funk, soul, Frank Zappa, and Rush (they're close enough).

and then we have the whole jam band scene, which IMO, is one of the better music scenes to happen in the last 25 or so years.

plus, we may not have started metal, but we perfected it (and then killed it lol) not to mention a lot of the current successful prog bands come from North America

however, this is not to defend current American music (which is some of the worst trash ever made, Indie and mainstream, with some exceptions)

so you Brits can keep your prog. actually no, i want it, nevermind...

Well... British prog is one of the best and perhaps the most old of all prog country oriented list.

That's just silly. You might as well have said something like that about Peter Hammill or Klaus Schulze, but they are part of the significant british and german scene.

So the "scene" Zappa (and Beefheart) makes America, instead of Italy, Germany, France etc the relevant comparizon to the British scene (which was the context for my reaction)?

At the very least, Signals is a stellar Rush record, and so is Grace Under Pressure. Just stating the facts!

Now, while I was once a rabid Rush fan, and still am not far removed from that, I wouldn't go so far as to exclaim that "Rush smokes all of those bands." That would be silly. The stylistic differences between all of those bands is off the chart. Floyd to Tull to Rush to Crimson. How different do just those four sound?

That's what I love about all these bands...something for everybody.

this prog is better than that prog and blah, blah, blah, sounds like religion, my imaginary friend is better than your imaginary friend, liking prog for where it comes from is ridiculous, a thread should spark the uplifting and not the oneupmanship, now that I got that off my chest I want to let you in on a little secret,  the 1970`s are gone for all but a few of the fortunate that absorbed a little too much orange sunshine

In my opinion UK Prog is some of the most listenable, although in general proggy-ness, Germany, France and Japan have held the top of the list for quite some time.
