The first Prog album, worldwide, was 'In the Court of the Crimson King', so, British Prog is the first...whether it is the best, is another argument.

What about Freak Out by Frank Zappa in 1966? I guess you know Zappa was not British
Now about your list, there are great bands, but I can't care less for many of them, quality is important, quantity matters very little, so if you ask me which country has more bands, I would say probably England, but if you ask me where the best Prog is....I wouldn't know where to start unless you find me many better bands than:
- Focus
- Sala Mammas Manna
- Anglagard
- Par Lindh Project
- PFM
- Banco
- Le Orme
- Kansas
- Triumvirat
- Triana
- Ange
- Mona Lisa
- Petrus Castrus
- Aphrodite's Child
- Pablo el Enterrador
- Bacamarte
- Los Jaivas
- Frágil
- Fantomas
- Shadow Circus
Just to mention a few.

Sorry, but Rush smokes all of those bands. Not to mention our incredible post-rock artists (Pelican, Russian Circles, Isis).

But that's just an opinion. I do agree with you on the fact that I enjoy Rush more than most of those bands..(I do like PT better however )..but that's not everyone's opinion

70s English prog and rock is the best. I don't care for much rock music after 1982. That's when American music took over and ever since most prog has been too influenced by american guitar music(metal and hard rock) and you don't get great melodies these days so the music doesn't really last long at all

classic prog the way most people think of it is almost purely Brittish.
that was my impression before coming to this site im sure that was many
of your's. sure there were others, the italians the germans, but the
brits pretty much defined the symphonic genre.
however, the old guard is long dead and the progressive musical scene has exploded and influenced everything from meshuggah to the flower kings. Thats the scene the American have been on top of since the 90's.

who cares! besides, we Americans have blues, which without, rock music basically wouldnt exist, and then we also started rock itself, plus we got jazz, jazz-fusion, funk, soul, Frank Zappa, and Rush (they're close enough). and then we have the whole jam band scene, which IMO, is one of the better music scenes to happen in the last 25 or so years. plus, we may not have started metal, but we perfected it (and then killed it lol) not to mention a lot of the current successful prog bands come from North America however, this is not to defend current American music (which is some of the worst trash ever made, Indie and mainstream, with some exceptions) so you Brits can keep your prog. actually no, i want it, nevermind...

idk, with his vast amount of material, he is a scene.

Well... British prog is one of the best and perhaps the most old of all prog country oriented list.
British prog have many examples of what prog rock was and are. and is the most well know for all the newbies in the camp.
I think that many factors due join to qualify that "British prog rock are the best", but i have to say that other many countries, like Germany, France and Italy, for example, stands with several frist division groups of prog rock.
Maybe one of the best defines better the British prog rock. and i would like to say that British prog rock is the most consistent.
my two cents

Sorry but i disagree about your opinion. in that list are most of the cream of prog rock, and i would like to know in what bases your opinion.
Rush is a great band but his origins are a Zepp-like band, just listen to his first album, it has all the hooks and cliches of a Led Zepp wannabee, mixed with some Budgie-like vocals of Geddy Lee.
Of course they improve his chords and record very good albums until 1981 Moving Pictures, but then... fallen of the pinnacle of his better works.
Genesis and Jethro Tull for example have better albums, for example Thick as a Brick is far a more complex album that Rush masterpiece 2112, and not to mention Genesis Selling England or The Lamb.
above Fly by Night, Hemispheres and Farewell to Kings, anytime of day.
And i do like Rush a lot, but facts are facts.
There are others very good bands enlisted and they are great!!!

That's just silly. You might as well have said something like that about Peter Hammill or Klaus Schulze, but they are part of the significant british and german scene. So the "scene" Zappa (and Beefheart) makes America, instead of Italy, Germany, France etc the relevant comparizon to the British scene (which was the context for my reaction)?

Well, it's quite a shame to say that the 'Brit-Prog' is the best!!! God, we're not in a popular culture. I'd say that what the popular culture is something stereotype and keep comparing a thing with another, in this case: Brittish Prog mvt with another country ones. We should stop comparing (especially in this progressive world) things.
For example: Try to compare Brittish Prog Mvt with a German Krautrock... Which is the best? We absolutely won't get any answer... Tell me if I'm wrong

At the very least, Signals is a stellar Rush record, and so is Grace Under Pressure. Just stating the facts! Now, while I was once a rabid Rush fan, and still am not far removed from that, I wouldn't go so far as to exclaim that "Rush smokes all of those bands." That would be silly. The stylistic differences between all of those bands is off the chart. Floyd to Tull to Rush to Crimson. How different do just those four sound? That's what I love about all these bands...something for everybody.

Well, I for one favour German prog, and not because I am German. It is simply that German prog was a lot more experimental than any other prog. However, the era of German prog ended in 1977; anything that came afterwards is, with the exception of some of the old heroes who still continue making great music, crap. Psychedelic Monsterjam and Cosmic Explosion were two interesting new projects, but sadly short-lived. But of course it was the old guard who started them.

this prog is better than that prog and blah, blah, blah, sounds like religion, my imaginary friend is better than your imaginary friend, liking prog for where it comes from is ridiculous, a thread should spark the uplifting and not the oneupmanship, now that I got that off my chest I want to let you in on a little secret, the 1970`s are gone for all but a few of the fortunate that absorbed a little too much orange sunshine

British Prog is the Best ?? this thread came to my attention at the right time , and surely as a middle eastern living in Lebanon , and ex. pilot from 73 - 04 , i disagree about this saying . this post must be as follows = Progressive music is the Best // i've been following , collecting & enjoying Prog since i was 16 in 1969 , i know every single detail about my old 9550 vinyl albums ( all of them prog , blues & jazz , in addition to the essential pop songs ) . Just imagine my friends a 16 years old teenage , knows few words in english , and have to go through this fantastic world of prog and enjoy it . The good thing is that i've started with Supertramp ( first album ) , Fruupp ( future legends ) , Uriah Heep ( very eavy & Salisbury) , Jonesy ( no alternative) , Pink Floyd ( ummagumma & Meddle) and Led Zep ( third) . Before the lebanese civil war in 1975 , we use to have some good local bands playing prog rock music , but disappear when the war started ( the News , the Storms , Jon Jon et les mauvais Garcon , Black Stones ) and so many others , all lyrics used by these bands were in English . So i had the chance in 74 to join our airline to be a pilot , since then i've started to follow my dream closely in participating in this amazing world of progressive . Regardless , Prog . started in the British territories ( maybe!! ), but the british wasn't aware of what's happening around this planet .
Prog doesn't belong to anyone , it belongs to the world , it belongs to the memory of all artists involved in it , to the label companies , to all collectors around the world , to the good bands holding the torsh since the mid 60's up till now . It's a real dream to live and watch all these activities around the world involved with our favourite music . No doubt that bands like Floyd , Genesis , Crimson ,
Van Der Graaf , ELP , Jethro Tull , are excellent bands and they are British , but Still i'm not gonna
list hundred of bands from Europe , Middli East & Africa , Asia & America , Australia , ARE also
excellent prog bands . ///////// and by the way , my friend Maher gave me a new CD , done by an Ethiopian composer & musician , his name is Daniel . W . Gabriel , it's instrumental only , but the best prog album i've ever heard in 40 years !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /////////////////// So , British are excellent , but not the Best !!!!! In my opinion UK Prog is some of the most listenable, although in general proggy-ness, Germany, France and Japan have held the top of the list for quite some time.
