It can be both! I love Kubrick's films, and am never adverse to more Kubrick discussion. My favourite is either CLockwork Orange or 2001: A Space Odyssey. For several years I'd say that A Clockwork Orange was my favourite movie, and there's no movie I've discussed more over the years. Dr. Stranglelove and The Shining I both love as well. Lolita is fun (the version with Jeremy Irons lacked the humour of Kubrick's imagining). My one real disppointemnt was Eyes WIde Shut -- possibly the most expensive little movie ever made. I think that was poor last effort, and his obsessive perfectionism and major over budgetness, well the results weren't worth it I felt. I read a book about Kubrick which said that Kubrick terrorised and was absolutely horrible to Shelley Duvall in The Shining (practically giving her a serious nervous breakdown) so to get a more realistic performance from her. In that case I might say it was almost worth it. ;)

As much as I love all of those works (although I haven't seen some of
the very early ones) I had to settle on The Shining. A truly excellent
and masterful horror movie.

My favorite movie of all time is Dr. Strangelove. That and Spinal Tap are the only two comedies ever made that get consistently better with each new viewing. Also, I've loved every Kubrick film I've seen, in particular 2001, A Clockwork Orange, Paths of Glory, and Full Metal Jacket. Though I'm not a horror fan, I think The Shining is great, and Eyes Wide Shut is better than people give it credit for. Still need to see The Killing, Barry Lyndon, and Lolita.

^^^ Personally I liked Eyes Wide Shut, but I was disappointed by the
ending... greatly.... It really had a cool style to it though!

The Shining was the only horror/suspense film that actually scared me a bit. Most horror films these days are just "jump" films.

Well I love Lolita, because it's so groundbreaking. Not that the rest weren't, but that just caught my fancies way before i heard it was Kubrick.

Tough to pick between Clockwork and Strangelove. Both great movies.

I've only seen A Clockwork Orange and 2001: A Space Odyssey. I enjoy them about equally, but since I prefer A Clockwork Orange the book and Space Odyssey has less votes, I voted for that.

I thought this poll was done before, but anyway
2001: A Space Odyssey probably my favorite movie of all time, by my favorite director. |

The Shining. It's not only my favorite Kubrick film, but also my favorite horror film. It's not a genre I relly pay uch attention to these days. I think the Japanese version of the The Ring is the only horror movie of any note since The Shining.
The Shining was built around suspense and atmosphere, which was reinforced by the great performances, and the excellent soundtrack. Apparently Stephen King didn't like the film, and went on to re-make the story as a mini series. Although the MS does stick closer to the book, Kubricks film is art, and the MS is predictable trash in comparison. IMO... |

we've had one of these polls before, and as I recall, last time I was the only person to vote for 'Paths of Glory' with 'The Killing' close behind...and I'm sure, this time will be no different...
