Ever heard of a band called Down I Go?I have been listening to them a lot lately, particularly their new album Tyrant and previous album This Is Disastercore. They are sort of an extreme/hardcore/avant hybrid with some jazz leanings.Awesome stuff!

I (I will have to speak of myself now, but these applies to many, many other members) never go into APPRECIATION threads for bands or genres I don't like, unless is to ask for advice (like the post rock one... I went to the Kayo Dot one as a joke, yes, as my original review of 2006's album was kind of polemical... and I also expressed my appreciation for their better (WAY better) 2008 album... If there was a Sigur Ros APPRECIATION thread, I would LOVE to go and express my "love"... but wouldn't that be considered flaming or trolling? And wouldn't that be inmature? Can't I live knowing that other people like what I dislike?

Please... create a thread called "I hate metal" or "I can't stand double bass drumming" or "Glen Gould a much better piano player than the guy in Negura Bunget"... We have other areas where those threads would be welcomed... here, well, these are APPRECIATION threads.... please.

have you not read the post before yours? I did NOT criticize the genre at all, I merely remarked that the name "Tech" is misleading.  what is so difficult about that?

Well, I have to say that these bands fall into the same pit that some jazz-rock artists fell into before (Al DiMeola, for example).

First of all, the mere name "Tech Metal" is already misleading; technique is being confused with speed here. There are lots of other instrumental techniques than mere speed, many of which can NOT be used at high speed, or at least even if they can be used they lose their effect. This seems to be something which many people forget. Listen to an acoustic guitar piece by Steve Hackett; it much more deserves to be named "technical", even if it is a lot slower. Paganini could certainly play breathtakingly fast, but he got the most "awws" when he played slowly and used some other extraordinary techniques then. Read up on him if you don't believe me.

As a rule of thumb, the difficulty of any piece of music increases with speed. Therefore if you try to group pieces by technical difficulty, this group is bound to contain more fast pieces than slow ones. However, of course it is true that slow parts can also be difficult to play. Having said that, most of the bands in Tech Metal don't play fast all the time ...

[QUOTE=BaldFriede]

I disagree about the rule of thumbs, Mike, and even have an excellent counter example from classical music: classical pianist Glenn Gould, whom many consider to be the greatest piano player of the 20th century, recorded Bach's Goldberg variations twice, once in his youth and once 26 years later. the second recording is much slower, but certainly not because he couldn't play fast anymore, and if you think it is less technical then you have no idea of piano playing. playing breathtakingly fast is the privilege of youth who think speed impresses; as you grow older expression impresses you a lot more.
on a side note: there do exist 4 recordings of the Goldberg variations by Gould now, but only 2 of them were published during his lifetime

certainly playing slower is less technical. But if you play a piece much slower than usual it becomes more difficult to get the timing right. What confuses me though about your example is that at the end you switch from "technical" to "expression", which is an entirely different subject.

And about this the tech/extreme genre in general: Let me emphasize once again that this isn't just about speed. Those bands don't play fast all the time. They also don't play technically demanding stuff all the time, without any pauses/breathing spaces.

Mmm... But it is an established name that is being used on this website for a few months now.. (actually... more than 6 or 7 if I'm not wrong).... And if you choose an APPRECIATION thread to comment on that name which you think is incorrect, what impression do you think that gives us? You could have said something about the "tech" name in a thread months ago when the sub-genre was established.... or even now, you could create a specific thread for the subject in the prog lounge area... but, and you know it, coming to the APPRECIATION thread to do that is quite... say, out of place... Wink

they are interesting, but I gotta admit, that Meshuggah sound is getting a little worn-out.....(it is so unique and novel that now everyone wants to cop some of that action....)
my favorites for that style would be Octopus and Obsidian.....

Found two Mod Flanders Conspiracy cds, will check them out tonight.  Unless I put Lye By Mistake on repeat, hehe.

Oh and I really like Super-string Theory.  They made it to the car, which is one of my highest honors.

It's been on my list for a week or two now.  Still shopping around for it which means the only copies I've found are in the $20-30 range.

Well this Mod Flanders Conspiracy certainly caught me off guard.  Wasn't ready for the emo vocal style at all LOL  ... not a huge fan of emo style vocals...  Went through a time where every new band I came across seemed to sound vocally the same, ie.. taproot, the used, (funny I seemed to have forgotten most of them heh), lostprophets, boy hits car .. etc.  Same thing is why I seem to be resisting the Protest the Hero.  Guess I was truamatized.   This may be schizophrenic enough for me to enjoy, but will have to wait for the mood for it.

Quite a difference between "...turn the urn spill..." and "Take a Ride on my One-Wheeled Rickshaw" which is always a good thing.  The latter is much better than the former.
