I live a few blocks away from train tracks, so I occasionally get woken
up in the middle of the night by their horns. My school is less than a
block away from those same tracks, and there's a daily train that goes
by every day during our band class, and since us trombones always
insist that the door leading out behind the school be kept open at all
times (especially during the winter), we end up not being able to hear
any other instruments for a few minutes every day.

a military air force base.
today for example, all i've heard all day long is very very loud engine noise - mostly jet-type, coming from several different types of aircraft.
sometimes they fly over my house so low i can see the oil and exhaust stains on the underside of the cowling.

how lame is that? I live for three years already a mile away from Los Angeles International Airport, where every minute(literally) an airplane flies by my window. You just get used to it and start ignoring them after a while. One night I counted six planes in the sky at the same time. The airport is so busy they sometimes have to wait in line to land. And I have an air force base five miles away, and its been fairly quiet(or maybe I just never heard it behind all this LAX noise )
Here's LAX

Thanks for the update Tony,
I only drop in once in awhile to see what's going on, therefore I wasn't up to speed on the latest gossip. Unlike you I have a company to run and can't spend every waking hour online.
So tell me, how's life in middle management mediocrity?

Ok.. I grew up about 15 miles from Cherry Point - a somewhat large Marine Air Corp base in NC. I was very use to low flying jets.. and that forever lasting boom sound. When the 'Blue Angels' were in town.. lots of fun.. if you were at the air show, if not, it was good to have central air conditioning and the windows closed.
However, living in NYC for 28 years... I had not heard the sound of fighter jets until the night of 9/11. That night, there was a few bomb threats to Penn Sta. and the Empire State Bldg.. all of which are a few blocks from my apt. and at about midnight a fighter jet flew so low over Manhattan that my entire building shook... the first thing that went thru my head was that they were trying to take out the Empire State Bldg. It scared the crap out of me.
I've only heard a few fighter jets fly over since.. one was yesterday. It was so loud that all the pigeons on the buildings took flight at once while the buildings shook. It was like an episode from the movie "The Birds".. Again... it sort of scared the crap out of me.
