BtBaM again, lucky bugger! I'm not much of CoB fan at all, their guitarist Alexi Laiho has always seemed a bit up himself, especially in that interview where he completely sl*gged off Dream Theater and John Petrucci I'm performing at school next week, Soothsayer with improvised solo, Welcome to Bucketheadland and probably The Trooper again, but I'll spice up the solo with some fancy alternate picked lines.

Ah! I might be seeing Satriani for my dad's birthday too . Also I'm seeing BTBAM again this time opening for Children of Bodom.
Yeah my sweeping as gotten better all around..and my alternate picking needs a little more work..I really just need to learn more theory to make my playing all around better, it will help out my songwriting and solowriting so much more too

^NO, I HOPE THE SHOW GETS CANCELLED AND HE DOES A PRIVATE SHOW IN MY HOUSE. Srsly though, so far my sweep picking is 10 times better than it was at the start of the shred war, plus my alternate picking is just cleaner and more confident sounding now, so all is pretty good

Yeah, when I'm composing I'm not listening to music..but right after finishing a song I'll listen to some stuff, and see how it compares..just to see if I'm getting any better when it comes to my writing.

I always miss giving credit to Mr. Schenker. You're right. He always seems to be missed on the guitar polls. Thanks for reminding me!
I have a couple of Uli Jon Roth CDs that I turn to for some inspiration and another guitarist that makes me smile is Mattias IA Eklundh. His CD "Freak Guitar The Road Less Traveled" is on Steve Vai's label 'Favored Nations" and has some impressive stuff. I need to pick up some Buckethead, as I haven't really experienced anything from him.
If I am in composing mode, I usually don't listen to anything because I want to keep my head clear from trying to borrow from anyone. Usually when I hit one of those ruts where nothing comes out, I wil pop in a disc that someone has recommended or something that I enjoy listening to over and over. Recently, I have enjoyed Vinnie Moore's collection on the Shrapnel label, Joe Stump, Uli Jon, and of course, some Yngwie and Ritchie. I also enjoy some Hess, a great band from Chicago that I found on Guitar Nine.
Glad to hear everyone is getting fed in one way or another!

Well right now I'm working on Michael Schenker's "Into the Arena", he's a great guitarist who doesn't get enough credit...and I just recently learned "The Drapery Falls", and "Welcome to Bucketheadland". As always, still shredding

Flamenco could be classified as shredding. Ok, so you're not slashing the strings with a plectrum per se, but your fingers are most certainly getting a healthly workout. I always admire the folks who can play with speed and accuracy on the classical and playing it, it's just you and the instrument. I started out learning classical guitar and flamenco, but after turning 15 and hearing Ritchie Blackmore, Eddie Van Halen and one Yngwie Malmsteen....well, I guess I needed a little electricity. As I get older, I have been listening to a lot of prog and classical music, as well as some ambient thrown in. I still pick up my faithful nylon string, as it's like an old friend that I remember from my past. Kind of silly, but for me, by warming up on the classical, my fingers seem to be more limber on my electric. Maybe it's all in my head....

Actually my shredding has gone way further. Though I haven't used an el guitar for god knows when. But I can do 2-finger picking at least 3 times as fast as I used to, like, tico tico style. It's really rewarding Not really in the sense of this competition, but hey, flamenco's kind of like shredding, right?

I'm checking in to see how everyone has been coming along on the "Shred War". As anyone increased their speed? Stuck to their goals? Have you progressed backwards or forwards? Didja break any strings along the way or blow any tubes?
This has been a good exercise, as I am been trying to improve my sweeping, mostly in the harmonic minor modes. My down sweeps are getting good, but my upstrokes lack a few things. I am also playing in the Hungarian Minor modes, which have that Egyption eerie quality, but certainly loads of fun. I also do a 'cool down' period, much like runners do after a healthy jog. I purposely try to slow my mind down, so I can keep everything in check.
I haven't been trying to learn any 'cover songs' yet, as I have been writing and composing music with my drummer, as my bassist has been recovering from a horrible car accident. But, my drummer has suggested some Rush, so perhaps I will check it out.
At any rate, happy shredding to all involved in their 'need for speed'.

I wont be tabbing the entire song anyway, since I don't have any access to guitars in C# tuning. What I can do though, I could also learn the middle section clean guitar part in the middle of the song, learn that whole solo, but right now my priority is the sweep picking bit.

I practice 5 string sweeps on a regular basis..my guitar teacher always uses 6 string sweeps, those are a bitch..I've never really practiced 3 string sweeps, so you tabbed the solo or the entire song by ear?

Ohh, awesome Well, that sweep picking is happening. Selkies, I've figured nearly all the sweeps out by ear, except one that throws me off, and also figured out all the finger positions for all the sweeps except that one I couldn't pick out by ear, and to top it off in standard tuning too for the extra challenge. My aim is to get it down damn clean, it's a bit sloppy right now, some of the 5 string sweeps are jerky and unclean, but all the 3 string sweeps I can do cleanly because I actually practice those normally.

Shawn Lane and Rusty Cooley are the stretch gods, Vai doesn't even compare to them in that respect.
How did the Selkies solo go? Tried it yet?

Try it first with the SG. And once you're done, use the Jackson. Because everything is now 3 frets lower on the Jackson, you'll find it challenges you to stretch more and of course the longer scale length will make the stretches even bigger again. Because I'm a weirdo, even playing the solo in standard tuning isn't a big problem for me in terms of stretches.
