Happy birthday Franz Kafka, Tom Stoppard, and, uh, Tom Cruise.  And... me! Tongue

I bet I'm the only one (out of the three of us who are still alive!) who got an Univers Zero CD, plus a Magma DVD & CD, for their birthday though. Big%20smile Thumbs%20Up

My ears are currently enjoying Univers Zero (remastered expanded first album).  I'm going to call it, on first impression, 'a tango for the mind'. LOL  Kind of passionately sulky, with an air of suppressed fury about it, and flamboyantly precise.  Yes - a tango for a mind with OCD. LOL

And phew, what on earth (or off it) is that lingo being yelled at me from the bonus track?!  I can't understand a word of it, but it sounds obscene! Confused Tongue

Many happen returns for the day, Melissa! Hug

I wish I got such goodies for my birthday.  I'm lucky to even get acknowledgement!

Which UZ album is that?  I am curious to know which bonus track you're referring to. Wink

Oh and fancy sharing your birthday with two of the best Czech born authors of all time and erm... some American guy who ruined one the of best sci-fi stories ever written.. Wink  I have to make to do with sharing a birthday with Geri Halliwell. Ouch

I'm glad you're enjoying UZ though, they're a fantastic band indeed.

May I recommend a purchase for the future?

Not sure why that's a question...

Koenjihyakkei - Hundred Sights of Koenji (2008 re-release with rerecorded drums) Wink

Thanks James! Big%20smile

Yes, shared birthdays are curious things.  Kafka and Cruise?  No way could I ever be a believer in astrology... Wink

Re. that UZ album - it is this one right here: http://www.waysidemusic.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=RUNE%201313

The bonus track is a 28-minute live performance of a piece called 'La Faulx'.  The tracklisting/personnel info for it refers to "vague rumblings and interstellar chaotic speech" (!) by Guy Segers. Smile

And don't worry, further Koenjihyakkei will be purchased dutifully in due course... Tongue

Le Faulx is the first piece on their next album Heresie.  Yeah, there's a lot of screaming.

I bought that re-release and it is fantastic, but of course, Heresie is still better than the debut Wink

"

TRIBAL LOGIC began in early 2006 in Chelyabinsk, the Ural city famous not only for manufacturing “Katyusha” and “T-34” during the WWII but also for its traditions in jazz-music. Not surprisingly, the majority of previous projects in which Anton Sheludko (keyboards, wind instruments), Alexei Savitsky (guitar), Konstantin Poptsov (bass) and Alexander Strashinsky (drums, percussions) got involved were jazz orchestras and ensembles. Discovering a unique chemistry of progressive rock, psychedelia with world-beat flavor, new-edged ambience, frenetic bluesy jams, and surreal instrumental soundtracks, the four decided to play together and push the frontiers of their own musical expressions. Their all instrumental music ranges from structured suites to extended improvisations with focus on melody, atmosphere, catchiness, and experimentation. While pensive and uneasy about the mixed reaction of local audience, the band relied on friends and family to spread the word about them. There is an album out available for free download at local website Chelmusic.Ru."

Press release notes:

Here come three names from the title. Who the hell are these guys? Is Comrade Wogulow that grey-haired bowed old man with the lustrous hateful eyes, "Chief Boss of the Globe Reconstruction"? Did Comrade Vermo graduate musical secondary school where he practiced folk-instruments and succeeded then as "an Electrical Engineer of Heavy Currents"? I don’t know… But as the name of Taroutz is concerned, Alexei is best known as a guitarist and master-mind behind instrumental avant-rock quartet I AM ABOUT ON THE LEFT. Since the end of 2006 when the four decided to cease their joint-venture, Taroutz has gained reputation as one of the most inventive and originally minded experimental composer scoring for cinema and making solo recordings. Ranging from micro-noise manipulations and ambient-drone sculpturing to academic minimalism and chamber-rock music, Taroutz’s solo works are always deeply rooted in documentary visual performance often self- cinematographed and directed.

On May 29, 2008 WOGULOW, TAROUTZ, VERMO played their stage-debut as a duo of Alexei Taroutz (guitar, electronics) and Evgeny Grinko (drums, percussions).

Forgot to mention one more thing about the above mentioned RAIG - October Equus have recorded a new album and it will be distributed by RAIG; it should be sent to the press soon and I hope to be able to review it as soon as it comes out; looking forward to it based on the strength of their s/t album from 2006

Oh, so you've bought that remaster of 1313?

That's one I may get myself... however, I already have the original version.  Can I condone having it twice on CD?

Yes, Le Faulx is indeed on Heresie.  I have Ceux du Dehors to listen to yet.  Apparently that's many peoples' favourite.

1313 is a good place to start though.  Heresie will blow you away as well though, so don't forget to get that in time.

Now I have recently made a Wayside purchase... but 1313 wasn't a part of it, so I may have to wait.  Of course, if I do get it, I'll have the old copy as well, so do I sell it, or keep it?  Hmm.

I think old CD editions will go the way of vinyls and may increase in price, especially as remasters are released, so I may in fact keep it.

Did you have a good day?  I know my birthday this year will be non-descript.  I'll likely go out but I won't get any goodies like RIO or Avant-prog albums... but then I have most of them already. LOL

Assaf, thanks for the additional information, it is welcomed.

Btw - you phrase your take on UZ quite perceptively and beautifully - do you write? You sound rather cut out to be a critic imo... Or maybe you're a genuine reader [rather unheard of these days - unfortunately!]...

You know it's a favourite album when you have at least 2 versions on CD, plus the LP... LOL

Will definitely get more UZ when I've done a bit more listening.  I only have one brain and one pair of ears, so it's one album at a time for me...!  Well, maybe...!! Tongue

I had a good most-of-the-day, thank you!  Unfortunately it kind of went downhill.  (I was supposed to go out but Migraine Stopped Play. Dead  Well, that is rescheduled so something else to look forward to I guess!!)

Assaf, thanks for the additional information, it is welcomed.

Do I write... well, not professionally.  For myself, in amateurish fashion, very much so!  I've made a start at writing some reviews here (currently a little limited in focus... but more will follow!), and there is some musically-inclined scribble on my blog (here's some stuff tagged 'music'), but I'm certainly not a critic (well, an 'armchair critic' maybe...).  [Er, um, end of self promotion! Embarrassed]

Hey James, I'm finally taking a listen to Passed Normal vol. 5, and it's quite fabulous overall. I have vol. 4 [which is rather stellar too], and some vinyl I think, but it's all packed..In a few months I'll look and hook you up...

btw - does anyone have a Mother Gong title to suggest?

I cannot help you with Mother Gong but I can suggest getting the one with Guy Evans of Van der Graaf Generator on. Wink

Just because he's on it.

Ah yes, I completely forgot about those Passed Normal promotionals.  Thanks for reminding me to listen again to the one I do have. Big%20smile

I like your reviews page so far.  I haven't read any of the reviews yet, but most of the stars are about right.  You forgot one for Live/Hhai!, though Wink.

As for Mother GonG, I've pulled a James and I've got an album or two sitting around unlistened to somewhere.  I'll put them on and let you know.

Live/Hhai was tough one to rate, for me.  But let's not start into discussing that...

So James, you inspired me: it shall be a Van der Graaf day [damn they're sublime!!!!]. Thanks for the reminder as it's probably been almost a year, and there is simply no excuse for such obtuse neglect!

Indeed.

Even I neglect them.  I pulled out Still Life earlier for the first time in ages.  It's one of my top 3 albums ever and I deliberately don't play it that much, because I don't want to grow tired of it. LOL

I may have a VdGG marathon in the week but I shall be having a Koenjihyakkei marathon first, because I now have all of their albums on CD.  Of course, I shall be playing the original recording of Hundred Sights of Koenji before the 2008 re-release, because I want to hear how much different it sounds now Tatsuya has re-recorded the drums. Big%20smile

I am glad I have been an inspiration. Wink

LOL - My beaux does the same thing. Not I - I play the things I love to death..until the music gets so deep inside me that I can know the tiniest change like I know my own heart*, until it's almost as natural as breath...[I shall admit it: I'm an inundation freak - de trop de trop de trop! Ever and anon...!]

So, prey tell - what are your other two?

*Well, maybe better actually...;)

I got this beautiful 3 part box set of Japanese mini LPs of theirs a few years ago - all remaster & bonus tracks in tow..I've been getting into vinyl again though, and the sound is so much better -  warmer and richer, than CDs in many cases, so I am thinking of of buying the LP versions of some of my faves again [sold thousands of LPs in the early 90s, like an utter fool!]
[I am trying to decide what title to rate a 15 [the top] for Gnosis - it's between Pawn Hearts and The Least We Can Do Is Wave to Each Other...and: Damn it's a difficult choice! ;)]

Really?! I didn't know that. I have the orig. Japanese release. I don't think it's as strong as the other two, but in this case I just may have to get the re-release I suppose...[Lordy! As if my list's not long enough!]

Sorry to take away the discussion from RIO affairs et al. but I'd like to mention this interesting and experimental album that's available for streaming by a one man project called Achenar which is a very interesting avant-guard listening experience.

Here's the press release that you'll find in the website:
"

Album Overview

As far back as 1996, an album was conceived of that combined the traditional and the contemporary, the harsh and the beautiful, subtlety and bludgeon. Unfortunately the technology of the time and the huge ambition of this vision restricted it's conception as a one man project. Now, the end result of four years of work not only composing, but learning the disciplines of digital mixing and mastering, has been fully created.

The album takes in traditional orchestral instruments, vocals of all types, electronics, samples, and wields them within a variety of compositional forms. The end result is a diverse, unique, yet cohesive work. One that does not so much break genre boundaries, as ignore their existence altogether."

As you were...

I'm not going to stream the entire album, but the stuff onthe last.fm page sounds very good!
