2. I have reduced my Netflix payment. 3. I have reduced my cable bill. 4. I eat out MUCH less than I used to. How about you guys? Any ideas to further save some dough? ![]() Edited by Drew - July 02 2008 at 03:39 |

I'm ok, that 5000 gallon tank I buried in my backyard many years ago that I filled with gas is coming in handy now. Next thing on the list is to buy all the organic beans I can find and store em in a cool dark place.

Energy saving light bulbs throughout the house. No uneccessary journeys in the car, and I've stopped running my PC, my stereo and my TV simultaneously. It was a bad habit of mine to be playing music, while chatting on PA, while watching TV with the sound off. Who says men cant multitask.. ?

No unneccessary lighting, no gadgets on standby, only neccessary car journeys, no new PC or console games, no eating out, cheap shopping whilst sticking to my list without impulse buying, and worst of all: REDUCED MUSIC CD PURCHASES.
Life's a bitch!

Those so called 'energy saving' bulbs are BS. They don't last as long as they say they do, they cost more and they contain mercury which is a health hazard. Another in the long list of scams that we humans must endure. Remember to watch your carbon footprint folks

I don't pay the bills in my household, since I live with my parents.
But things I do anyway, include urinating in the back garden ![]() When I'm home alone, on the computer, I make sure the only electrical things that are on are the computer, the ceiling light in the computer room and just make sure everything else in the house is switched off. When buying groceries, it's good to buy nationally made and owned food and various since it usually taste about the same as the bigger brand stuff, and it's cheaper anyway. |

In my house, the problem with the normal lightbulbs is that I find them not bright enough, and with the exception of two energy saving bulbs that blew, all the other ones that came new in my house when my house was built in 1999 are still working, so I would say nearly 10 years of lighting is not bad longevity. |

The mercury story was a bit of a concern, but I have found that they do pay for themselves. I have two ES bulbs in my house, which I put in in November 99, and they're still going. Since installing them throughout the house, my Dircet Debit payments have been adjusted slightly in my favour and may be adjusted further, once my meter is read again. I wouldn't be too sure and GW theory being a scam. I'm prepared to believe that it may be exagerated in some quaters, but why would the vast majority of scientists sign up to it, without considering other theories, or whether indeed, GW is happening at all? |

Whe we moved into our current house in 1991, there was an energy saving bulb in the one of the rooms - it's still there & still fine; apart from three switched by dimmers, all the other bulbs in our house are ES (I believe you can get dimmer suitable ES bulbs now as well
![]() I unplug everything from the mains when not in use now, rather than leaving all on standby (I've noticed a distinct drop in the monthly bills, too), make a point never to waste/throw away food & just generally act like a skinflint ![]() This thread tackles similar issues, but from a different standpoint as: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=48862 Nice to see these issues getting a good airing ![]()

Fuel prices haven't gone high enough yet for me to adjust my lifestyle - but my family doesn't really do any extraneous driving, anyway, only the essentials - commute, trips to the grocery store, etc. And if anyone starts to suggest I should ride a bike to get groceries or something like that...you can just save your breath. Not gonna happen.

![]() ![]() No, really... I... go out less. I'm not that much of a gas user really. I can't not go to class or to work... other than that, I limit my going outs....

![]() ![]() I would actually choose that option myself to save money, but sadly, that wasn't an expense for me to begin with.
