Topic: Opinions on the PRS SE Custom? Posted: June 28 2008 at 01:29 |
So recently, I've been turned on to PRS guitars by the likes of Steven Wilson, Mikael Akerfeldt, and others. Problem is, I dont have over $2000 to buy an American made PRS Custom 22 or Custom 24..
Shopping online, I stumbled upon the PRS SE Custom, the wallet-friendly PRS guitar. All of it's reviews were outstanding, moreso then I expected for a $600 guitar. Apparently it blows away the Epiphone Les Paul and gives the Gibson Les Paul Standard a run for its money!
It comes in the stoptail piece or a tremelo version, but some people say it may go out of tune with use too much use of the tremelo unless locking tuners are installed.
So does anyone own this guitar? Opinions? Should I try it out or is it a waste of my time?
Any feedback is appreciated.

I've never owned a PRS but the ones the teachers at my music school used were the best guitars I've ever played.. Gibson Les Paul? HAH!! Don't know any details of the model you're looking at but if it's a legit PRS it should be a slinky, great-sounding ax ..and most tremolo systems go out of tune, it depends how much you want to fiddle with the parts

Thanks for the feedback. I hear all the time that PRS are very reliable and smooth playing guitars, whether your paying $2400 or $600. Glad to hear that the Les Paul has nothing on it xD.
As for the tremelo, I'm thinking I might stick with the stop tail system because I already own a Dean Vendetta 4.0 w/ a Floyd Rose, so if anything I'll use that. Now that I'm accustomed to the Floyd, I'd probably end up pushing the tremelo out of tune continuously. Besides, how many guitars with a whammy bar can someone own, ya know? They're a distraction if you're not careful .

Well as it's well known, Gibson's quality control has been downhill for a while, and there have been reports of players needing to refret their brand new guitars just to play them from factory, which is just ridiculous, since I would expect to be able to play a guitar straight away for that price. PRS is indeed nice, and the quality much more consistent than Gibson. If you're into shredding, to be honest PRS is not the best choice. You do have the Petrucci signature models staring right at you in your sig, amazing guitars, but as you said not enough cash. It depends on what sound you want and what you want to do with it. If you can answer that more specifically, I can help you out a bit more.

Yea, as much as I'd love a Petrucci model, the wallet says no xD.
In terms of what I'm into, shred is a once in a while thing, but not totally my thing. I love listening to it, and essentially in the future I'd maybe try my hand at it, but for all intensive purposes the soloing I'll be doing is Porcupine Tree- esc. Melodic, very tonal, maybe some fast passages here and there but not much shred.
What I've heard on this particular model is that regardless of PRS not making "Shreddy" guitars, it supposedly has a very fast and smooth neck, but of course that's just what people say. I need to really try it for myself.
So for me, it's more melody then shred, just some fast passages occasionally, but not all too often I'm sure. Hope that clears it up a bit.

Well if you want to future proof yourself in case one day you want to really work on that technique, I'm afraid PRS is not the best choice, due to the roundish fretboard that has a 10 inch radius which doesn't promote the best vibrato technique unfortunately. I mean, if can afford to buy the PRS SE now and one day down the track afford something for the more technical playing, the PRS would be a nice thing to have. For your dollar, the best value for money in the 500-750 dollar price range is ESP LTD, Ibanez, Jackson. I've played a lot of Jap made Jacksons and the fretwork and attention to detail for the price have been astounding to say the least, even better than some Fenders and Gibsons going for 2 to 3 times the price.

Yea see I've tried a few Jacksons, Ibanez, etc, and as they are great guitars, they resemble my Dean too much. I pondered upon the shred factor and figured if I ever felt the need to, like I said have the Vendetta 4.0 w/ Floyd Rose and a Dean Vendetta 3.0 as well, which as an extremely fast neck. I bet with some tweaks to both of these guitars they'd be shred worthy if theyre not already.
As of now, I'm looking for a versatile guitar with a thick tonal sound, such as this or a stratocaster or something. I'm kind of turned off by the strat, plus I love the PRS sound. I think I'm gonna try it and play it by ear, thanks alot for your help.
As for you Mike, p-off man

Not so much that I didn't like it, just a personal preference, nothing against the stratocaster, sir Brandon.
As for the PRS, I've only heard them via internet, so quite obviously I need to try it myself before going anywhere fast. Still working on getting my ass out to Guitar Center, kind of a busy week thus far.

And + remind me again, you just got a new guitar not even a year ago. Why do you need a new one?

Please leave my topic sir Brandon, I'm done with your opinion.
More guitars = different sounds. It's called building, and when you have your own money you might do something of the sort.

Interesting topic, as I have been recently considering the the same thing as mantra. Never played one, but absolutely love the look of the Custom 24. I have used a Les Paul Custom forever and wanted to add something with the whammy bar. The 24 frets would be good too. Some good advice above and as I really can't afford to lay out the $5300- that's what they are worth in Australia, on a whim, I was wondering what you guys thought of the ESP LTD 1000 with whammy as a second choice. It's a bit more affordable.

^Hehe, make your own topic, don't hijack this one! I agree, PRS is too much to pay for in Australia, and you can get guitars with the same level of quality for half or less the price, so I've never seen the point in paying that much for a PRS, but each to their own. The ESP LTD 1000, dude, that is a seriously good guitar for the money. If that's the neck thru model, then that's the same one I remember playing a few months ago in a music store. Smooth neck, pretty good sound (although I'd personally swap the pickups out for something better), but licensed floyd sucks though so if you really want a guitar with a locking trem, look at Ibanez, their Edge Pro Trems have much longer lasting knife edges, and because of a bigger sustain block, better sustain as well.

That question was directed to cobb right?
If not, my guitars that I use now are in the "What Guitar Do You Use" thread. I could always repost it here, although im pretty sure that question wasnt directed at me anyway xD.
