I am looking for a 5 to 6 string bass for around $700. Any suggestions?

I've been eying the Spector Legend 5 Classic for a while now. It's about 600 bucks.

Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass is beautiful. It costs a bit more that $700 though.

Warwick basses ugly? You cannot be serious. I have a Streamer which I would highly recommend but it's over your price range. Not sure about their other models though, worth checking,

^ looks like it might need some heavy weights to counterbalance that "horn" ... unless it's hollow.

For your dollar (or whatever currency), the Geddy Lee Jazz Bass is unfortunately not the best value for money, so I have to go against recommending it. |

That's probably true of all signature model guitars and basses. It still looks extremely cool though. |

^That's generally the case with a lot of signature gear, yes.
Well my recommendation? Save up a little bit more, and get an Ibanez BTB bass. You might be able to get a discontinued '07 MIK model now, which could easily be around for 700-800 USD. 20 Inch fingerboard radius makes for seriously good playability, there is not a Fender Bass that can even come class to the BTBs playability. They also sound awesome and have a 3 band active EQ circuit, with a highly versatile adjustable mid range control. |

My friend has an Ibanez BTB, I've played it, it's great
Of course, I am a guitarist, and don't know everything about bass, but it does play nice.

All the Warwick basses I've tried are near-perfectly balanced - but then I've been looking at the mid range basses, like the Streamer $$.
The ONLY problem with the $$ is that you only get various flavours of earthquake out of it - it's an incredibly loud and bottom heavy bass, in terms of sound, but the instrument is very well balanced indeed, physically, and Id be surprised if that didn't apply to everything put out under the Warwick name.
Warwicks (at least, the non Rockbass models) are hand made, like Sandbergs.
The mention of Ibanez got me thinking - there are some amazing second-hand MIJ basses to be had; I think Aria made a 5-string, and there was definitely a Westone Spectrum 5-string.
Those old Matsumoku guitars are top quality (I own 3), and some of the top-end models compare very favourably with (expensive) modern guitars. Shouldn't be too hard to find one of these for $500 or less (e.g. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7314202164) - and worth every penny in my book. My Thunder 1A bass cost me £129 (approx $260), and I prefer it to my Fender.

You can't honestly like the look of that?
Now that's pretty! Headstock's a bit dull though...
