^ the best browser ever, particularly if you also use the plugins Noscript and Adblock Plus.
Strongly recommended plugins, not only because adverts can be a real nuisance, but also because they can pose a real security risk. Besides, some pages load *much* faster without the ads. |

Adblock and Noscript still work with Firefox 3, which I reckon are the 2 most important and desired add ons. |

I received an update warning for Adblock today, so I installed that, just waiting on the next Noscript update now.

Firefox 3 works fine and faster
Okay - with the exception of some add-ons - but this is a matter of time to be solved I'm quite sure ... |

I certainly understand the temptation to use these add-ons, as I did for quite some time. However, there are some compelling reasons not to use them, especially in the case of Adblock. The unpleasant fact of the internet is that it's not free, but advertisements (as obnoxious as they generally are) assuage the financial burden of site hosts. By blocking the ads, one is, in fact, shifting costs to another party altogether. (Note that I'm hardly a cheerleader for capitalism, but this is the reality we presently and unfortunately face.) Javascript does pose a potential threat to users, mainly because the user is allowing an external program to run on her machine. However, disabling javascript may cripple the functioning of legitimate websites (financial institutions, etc.). Of course, NoScript allows the user to "white list" safe sites in a fairly straightforward way. Still it is likely that only advanced users would detect that a disabled script is causing a particular rendering problem. In any case, the use of a little common sense while online is arguably the best way to maintain security. (I haven't used NoScript for about six months, and yet I haven't had one malware infection on my machine, which runs XP Pro.) |

^ I'm well aware of the problem of ad blockers causing financial damage for some websites ... but the problem is that some forms of web ads are really nasty. I wouldn't mind normal advertising (banners), but unfortunately there's no straight forward way to block offensive ads and keep the normal ones.
Noscript ... I agree that it might be too much for some users. I also admit that the risk of malware infection through Firefox Javascript is relatively small. It's a little bit different for XSS (cross site scripting) ... as I use many web 2.0 sites (last.fm, ratingfreak.com, etc) I feel a little bit safer knowing that the website doesn't simply load and execute scripts from www.snakeoil.com unless I explicitly permit it. |

I use Safari (Mac). I used to use Firefox, but I got tired of it. Back when I had a PC it worked better. The rest of my family loves Firefox. I have yet to convert them to the religion of Apple hehe.
