Hey, I put up the first review of Black Tie White Noise and now the 'first review of this album' banner is no longer attached.

...that's because there are now two reviews - "1st review" means "only review"

There's also a bug which means that if a rating only is added first, a review will not say "First review".

Not really a crime against humanity but this review could use some corrections... at times is barely intelligible...

What a well written review - most enjoyable reading.
We can post positive feedback too right?

Not bad reviews per se - but I must admit I don't like the extensive use of copying and pasting - especially when those copy and pastes are railings against other reviewers - not specific ones, but in general - which is just as bad, IMHO, as it comes across as a complaint against this site, like "what do we know about Progressive Rock?".
It's also incredibly lazy and sloppy reviewing, IMHO - and, looking through this guy's other reviews, especially the reviews of Hawkwind, this style of having a go at the site for not knowing as much as he does about Prog Rock is a common factor, which I think constitutes a breaking of the rules he agreed to.
The other aspect is the continual "This is more progressive than X", without providing any kind of supporting evidence or explanation. OK, I admit, that just annoys the hell out of me - it's not abuse of the system... but it feels like it to me
![]() These two were the ones that drew my attention to this reviewer;
The offending text is;
"I'm very surprised to see that, on a website devoted to progressive rock, Deep Purple In Rock is ranked higher than..."
Also, play spot the difference;
"One of my biggest complaints against the In Rock album applies also to machine Head. They only contain one type of song, there are no ballads on these albums and the instrumentation are the same on all the tracks. Still, thin album has several great classic songs but these songs are much better live. This studio album in not very well recorded."
"One of my biggest complaints against the In Rock album was that it only contained one type of song (with the exception of Child In Time), there were no ballads on that album and the instrumentation was the same on all the tracks. On this album, which is overall more varied, Anyone's Daughter stands out with its more folksy leanings based on and piano and non-distorted guitar. "

Agree with your annoyance Certified, and add mine regarding the machine-gun pace of these "reviews" where we allow 8 or 10 reviews of this quality on our lead page at any given time. I've mentioned that whole issue several times.
Did anyone catch he gave "Lizard" 2 stars right after giving "We can't Dance" 3 stars?

the best fix.... though not the most popular.. .reserve the front page for colab reviews. Not that they are perfect ... but as our senior collabs know... the standards are much higher and consistantly 'poor' reviews from PR's... can be dealt with. For the general posters.. it is their 'right' as it were to review albums.. the site though... has the 'right' to determine which reviews.. or reviewers represent the site.

Right now the whole page is filled with 10 copy-paste reviews. I'm not sure if this is against the PA rules, but is clearly disgusting to see the same review ten times. This is not the first time this user do this. No offense intended

Wouldn't the easiest fix be to send the offender a PM and tell them that if they do it again there will be consequences.
I'd hate to see the front page as only collab reviews. I think it would discourage new reviewers from coming onboard and lately some really good new reviewers have been showing up on the front page. |

discourage?... hmm.. maybe those who were never going to write decent reviews to start with.. they'll piss and moan about their 'rights' and tyranny like spoiled brats.. forgetting this is a privately owned site. For those who do.. or would... all the incentive in the world to write better .. to get noticed... and promoted to PR status. as I said.. not a popular solution.. .but damn it would a) solve the problem you all have brought up....and b) encourage even better reviews from those who take their reviews seriously aren't just f**king with the ratings/rankings.. or just projectile vomitting reviews with no regard to the quality of them. Like the current member who is filling the front page If the 'problem' is bad enough... that is a perfectly good solution. If it isn't... then we take the bad reviews.. with the good. |

I would be willing to go with your idea of all high quality reviews on the front page if all collabs were held to a high standard and lost collab status if they wrote shallow reviews. I've seen some less than great reviews from collabs now and again. |

yep... that would the caveat to it.... not that they have to write great reviews everytime.. but what they must do... is attempt to write good reviews... and any numbskull can tell the difference between those that do.. and don't. No one expects perfection... only to try to be the best you can be. Edited by micky - July 21 2008 at 12:29 |

Now there is two of them filling the front page with ... um nonsense. I guess the other guy didn't think Southy's reviews were bad enough and that southy needed some help dragging us down.

there are a couple admins on... if they see it and think it is a problem.. they'll bring it up to M@X. Or start kicking someone's ass ... we only propose.. and illustrate the problem. We can't solve the problems .. only suggest what we think can fix it.
