Can't go past the Fripp, Lake, McDonald, Giles, Sinfield line up when it comes to music quality.
Lake better voice than Wetton. Win for the Lake era
The Wetton era doesn't even have any keyboards. Another win for Lake era
Song writing is stronger during Lake era. Another win for Lake era
I prefer Giles drumming over Brufords 1973-1974 drumming. Another win for Lake era
Poseidon is my fave KC album. Another win for Lake era
Only problem was Lake era only lasted 2 albums and Wetton era lasted 3 albums.
The Belew 80s era probably has the most amount of quality possibly over 3 albums though.

I´m gonna go with the Discipline line up, it has my favorite guitarist, drummer and bass player in the same band!... and Belew is there too!!!

There may be a tiny bit of keys, but I can't seem to remember any off the top of my head

You might want to check out the Mellotron on Starless (the song).

As long as Fripp is a part, I'm good.

The Muir period - his percussive insanity seems so right for KC (listen to Easy Money on Lark's Tongue), and clearly rubbed off on Wm Bruford.
I have to say the more I hear the King Crimson Collectors Club live issues, the more respect I give the Boz Burrell, Mel Collins, Ian Wallace period (check out the Denver set)

My favorite lineup has to be the original KC lineup (not the Giles Giles & Fripp). They made In the Court of the Crimson King! The early 80's lineup that included Belew, Fripp, Bruford and Levin is my second favorite. Adrian Belew's David Byrne-like vocals are always entertaining, and Tony Levin's Chapman Stick was (and still is) very entertaining.

Would you like some Bailey's? |

Fripp, Giles, McDonald, Lake, Sinfield
Although I have to agree with Spookytooth that the Belew, Levin, Fripp, Bruford lineup is great too. |

Fripp, Giles, McDonald, Lake, Sinfield - that line-up was just magic. After, Fripp, Belew, Levin, Bruford |

Michael Giles drumming is the best in prog and Greg Lake's vocals are much better than John Wetton's so the early era gets my vote.

All of 'em, except perhaps the last one. And the Lizard/Larks' lineups are missing (as well as some later ones). I'll say '73.

Fripp, Wetton, Cross, Bruford, and Muir were the oncoming storm.
