The only Italian prog band in my collection is Premiata Forneria Marconi of which I have Per Un Amico and Live in USA saved onto my computer along with other bands I've found through blogspot. I'll have to get around to transferring it all onto CD-R at some point in case something horrific happens to my computer

Just got some exciting news about Il Bacio Della Medusa:
A live DVD is going to be made of the band's upcoming shows in support of their new album. This is going to be spectacular. I'll keep you all informed.

Wow, 5.00 avg for BDM! I still haven't heard it, have to wait until I can go on one of those Syn-Phonic-spree's... I'd be interested to know where some of you would rank "Discesa..." among RPI albums over the last 8-10 years or so. |

Well the best three from the nineties up to now, in cronological order:
1995: Nuova Era - Il Passo del Soldato.
2006: La Maschera di Cera - LuxAde
2008: Il Bacio della Medusa - Discesa agl'Inferi d'un Giovane Amante
Obviously there are not albums from classical bands (as Stati di Immaginazione by PFM or L'Infinito by Le Orme).
The three above are the best from what I've heard.
There are many other highlights, though and I will provide a short list in few seconds.

Here we go with the list, in cronological order. Well, it's not a list, really. Only the suggestion of four other records, of the many you can find searching in the vast amount of titles from the contemporary italian prog bands.
1996: Aria Palea - Zoicekardìa
Instruments are reduced to the essence: flute, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, drums and percussions. The unespected element are the recitative and weird vocals that in some parts really reach the highest level of theatrical development I ever listened to. Just try, for example, the intro “Zoicekardìa (Prologo)” where recitative vocals alternates to strange laughings and noises until flute comes in and opens for an interesting duo/interplay with electric guitar, in a jazzy temper a la Jethro Tull's This Was. Very interesting, especially for Tull's lovers as I am.
The general sound of the album is clearly and freely inspired to early Jethro Tull, and also Stand Up features as the isnpiration here. The track “Scena Dopo Scena”, in particular, has a similar structure of the Tull's big classic “A New Day Yesterday”. Other tracks are more freely played with more improvisation and quasi-jazzy feel as “Verso la Foresta”. Very good work on acoustic guitar, I admit it. The whole record is convincing and should be in any prog folk collection. The magnum opus here is the closer “Zoicekardìa (Il Volo)” which is the longer song, over 11 minutes with high level of progressiveness and improvisation with the opportunity for all the band's members to show their own talents. Lyrics are not in italian but, I presume, in local dialect from where the band comes: the southern part of Puglia. This is a peculiarity of the italian prog folk experience, since the folk side of music depends on, mainly, to the local traditions that still are very strong here. The most relevant example is Nuova Compagnia di Canto Popolare and their lyrics in Neaples' dialect. 1998: Consorzio Acqua Potabile (CAP) - Robin delle Stelle
The album (appreciable cover art) is builded up on five extended tracks between 9 and 18 minutes long. The general atmosphere is majestic and pompous. Massive use of keys thanks to the two keyboardists Sellone and Bollea as it was for other famous bands from the seventies CORTE DEI MIRACOLI and IL VOLO (BANCO apart). Emotional vocals for adventurous textures really make the five tracks five epics. Just listen to the catching opener Signori del Tempo and you'll understand what amazed other enthousiastic reviewers. The title track is even more involving due to its vocal crescendo. Lontana Lucia has a more romantic feel with an interesting medieval approach thanks to the use of flute and bagpipes. Perhaps their most peculiar contribution here. It doesn't help to break the continuous sad atmosphere that permeates the whole record. Soli sull'Olimpo is the longest work (over 18 mns) but probably the less adventurous. More soft in its middle parts, more ethereal. The opening and the closer sections are more aggressive with remarkable interplay between organ and classic piano. Robin...Again is thought as the perfect farewell song with more accent to vocal parts and less use of drums. Excellent if you really love rich and bombastic retro (italian) symphonic prog. 2005: Ubi Maior - Nostos
And so Ubi Maior sing and play as they were a nouvelle hero who has to pass through unspeakable adversities, horrible wars and apparently endless fights, before he reach the warm light of home. It's not a case that the last track is “La Tua Casa Comoda” (Your Own Comfortable Home) a cover of the same-titled track of IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO. The album is builded by seven strong compositions and opens with the wonderful “Vendetta” which is melancholic and soft for the first two minutes until it explodes in an exciting traditional italian symphonic prog plus some fiery electric guitar play and “nocturnal” lyrics: “I'm sharpening the blade in the night..:”. “Terra Madre” (Motherland) is a more soft tune and, to be honest seems built upon a non-prog structure enriched by remarkable job on synthesizers a la ELP's “Lucky Man”. Very pleasant listening. “Livia” is an enjoyable short piano and synth gem. Great sensibility on drums. “Messia” is probably the most favourite of mine here, musically speaking, at least. It's the stronger one with faster tempo and explaining well the ancient greek word “PATHOS. The only remark is about lyrics that appears a little bit unispired even if about a science fiction story starting in the 2141 year when, according to Ubi Maior, (evil) men from Neptun will land on earth and they will try to destroy us and our planet. Fortunately a “Messia” will finally come, after so many troubles and atrocities. “Oltre il Vento” (Beyond the Wind) is another shorter tune about 3,45 minutes played faultless with an appreciable delicacy. A tasteful introduction to “Nostos” epic (over 23 mns!!). This adventurous track has some memorable moments, indeed, but it's somehow weaker, in my opinion, than the other six. Pointless sometimes, but, fortunately the second half appears more varied and intriguing. A very good one, though! What I could say more? Even not a pure masterpiece, Nostos is one of the most exciting records ever released in Italy in the last years. Highly recommended. It's destined to become a classic!!! 2007: La Torre dell'Alchimista - Neo
The album, basically, is based on powerful hammond organ excursions enriched by strong mellotrons waves, synthesizers, acoustic and electric pianos. It obviously recalls ELP, but not only. Some strong typical italian flavour such as Le Orme and Rustichelli e Bordini, for example, is well evident. Not a Banco inspired band, tough. At least to my warning. Drums and bass lines are very convincing and remark vehemently the many shifting moods. The atmosphere is not completely vintage, though, due to the more soft, singed romantic parts that are wisely spread all along the running time. Classical mythological creatures such as "Cerbero", "Medusa" and "Idra" are, simply, the icing on the cake!
The album appears more mature than its well acclaimed predecessor (the self titled debut), possibly with the help of guest musicians on flute, violin and soprano sax. Moderately longer tracks (between 6 and 11 minutes) and two shorter tunes. While the long ones evokes stunning atmospheres of pompous symphonic prog, the shorter ones aren't simple at all, but more acoustic oriented with classic piano as in the awesome "Idra" (1:51) that's the intro to "Riseglio, Procreazione e Dubbio pt. I" (11:31). Edited by Andrea Cortese - June 18 2008 at 17:19 |

Thanks Andrea. I haven't heard the first two but I like Ubi Maior and LTdA a lot; Nostos is probably my favorite of the few I've heard. |

Well, I haven't heard but one of the titles Andrea mentioned, and not enough of 2000s albums to make such a clear comparison. I can only say that the 2nd BDM album ranks very high on my all-time list, any genre, any time period. |

It's about time someone mentions CAP. Great musicians and even nicer people , met two members for dinner , drinks and singing in Milano in 2003. WOW!

Le Orme? Where to start. Also, I'm semi-sure I'm heading for PFM - Isolente + Di Terra (morbid curiosity), Banco - Darwin + Um? Maybe debut; whichever Linus suggests really (took one Micky recommendation, so balancing). |

Great review on D.F.A., James!
I didn't even imagine that the album was already in your hands...
Another new entry (I', sure andrea parentin has just suggested them for inclusion) are the jazz-rock band APHELION. Lizard Records has just issued their debut.
FROM BTF:
APHELION is an all instrumental project formed on 2004 by Alessandro (keyboards),Sebastiano (bass),Matteo (guitars),and featuring a mixture of technical progressive and fusion/jazz styles.
After the recording of a previous two tracks demo CD called "Demonstructive", excellently reviewed from press up in the world .In 2006 the band signed for the Italian label Lizard Records and a new drummer ,Enrico Pintonello, joined the group. Keeping up the hard work and pushing the envelope higher and higher, finally in late 2007,the band records a 7 tracks full length album “Franticode” at the Majestic Studio (Venice ,Italy) and mixed by the keyboard-god DEREK SHERINIAN (Planet X, Billy Idol, Dream Theater, Alice Cooper, Yngwie Malmsteen) at his Beach Wood Manor studios in Los Angeles. Italian fusion guitarist Alex Stornello also features on one track of the CD. Aphelion’s main goal is to reach an unique, signature and groovy sound encompassing progressive, rock/fusion, technical metal, jazz ,experimental sides. This is not important to follow a genre or how good you play it but rather to create your own one. Franticode reflects that. FRANTICODE is the result of an hard work of structural, harmonic, rhythmic, melodic research, and of a huge arrangement effort. The dense texture between the instrument gives the opportunity to create new solutions ,new proposals. Fraseggios, solos, rhythmic licks never stand for themselves, they are alike the pieces of a patchwork turned towards something that sounds tasteful , weird ,groovy and tight at the same time. Through the listening of Franticode you pass across many “tastes”, every single track sounds different and you may need more than a listen before enjoying it fully. Technically speaking you could hear influences from Planet X, Gordian Knot, Spastic Ink, and many others, with lots of odd time signatures, unbeat times, dressy themes ,fusion-style solos and arrangement recalling tones familiar to Allan Holdsworth, Tribal Tech, Chick Corea, and other monster from the fusion community who are strongly deep-rooted in Aphelion’s background. The production ,moreover, is stellar, thanks to the quality of recording phase and to the amazing mix work of Derek Sherinian. Edited by Andrea Cortese - June 20 2008 at 01:14 |
