im only familiar with Area and PFM. I do have pretty much all their studio albums, and they're phenomenal. anyone know what would be a good Italian band to check out next?

Banco is a sure bet. Go for Io Sono Nato Libero. Excellent album, in my opinion their best.

And Andrea, I'd desperately like to discuss some Italian prog. But I don't have anything new. Will place an RPI order soon, though. Perhaps I'll include that BDM album Wink.

Andrea....I was afraid to say anything because I figured if I gush any more about BDM, I'm liable to get kicked off the board for excessive fanboyismLOL   But honest to God, is it just stunning or what?  I can't believe how good the flute, violin, and piano are integrated into the heavy rock, and Cecchini's just a wonderful vocalist.  And the melodies are so charming.  It makes me sad that when I saw the "best of '08 so far" list there was no mention of BDM.  Well, they'll be high atop my '08 list, that's for damn sure.  And they are about to start playing dates for the new album. 

I have not yet heard the other titles you mention. 

And I've reviewed the Corte Aulica album on my Italian Prog page as well as here in their thread under "suggest new artists."

DarkShade, the Banco/Orme stuff is classic of course, but I also push people towards the lesser known gems....see my Italian Prog recommendation list for my suggestions....it's in the "lists" section.

For something more current and just as fantastic, get the Bacio Della Medusa 2nd album that Andrea and I are talking about.

how about the drums? I find the're slightly subdued and propbably this is the only negative remark I can find. The first two tracks lead by violin are superb and also the third section titled La Bestia e il Delirio: very interesting.

A.K.A. Terrorism and Sabotage , sounds almost like a Blue Oyster Cult tuneLOL BTW, Which Tilion? "Insolitariamente" is only so-so. For some odd reason, BDM is hard to find in Montreal, I guess I need to order it in. I heard a sample and its buzzing.

Hello friends, I'm back from two weeks of quality vacation in the rockies Heart.  Yesterday I managed to order the four cd's on sale at Wayside that James mentioned...it will be a race to post the first review of Libra LOL.  Anyway, nice to be back and I'm happy to see that the thread and blog are doing so well, great job guys

5%20stars What an wonderful surprise! Il Bacio della Medusa' second record has been just issued and it's already a classic, a superb example of melodic heavy prog with lots of interesting (and unespected) variations.

As other fellow reviewers have pointed out, the concept is about the tale of lovers Paolo e Francesca (from Dante Alighieri's Commedia). Naturally it has been personally developed as a musical journey through the so called other side. There's a wise use and balance of infernal scenes, sad feelings, overwelming sorrows and infinite (sincere) love in the lyrics' themes. The imaginary used is not too original, though, 'cause it's on a similar vein to what La Maschera di Cera have already done with LuxAde (2006) which is, basically, the descent of Orpheus to Hades searching for his dead wife Euridix.

Musically it's another story. Il Bacio della Medusa deliver elaborate arrengements since the first part of the record. The first two sections, in particular, are lead by evocative violin and classic piano with exciting melody and vocals by Simone Cecchini. There's an uplifting crescendo the introduces the listener deep in the infernal themes untile time comes to show Lucifer's land in all its unespected colours and whipping anguish. From La Bestia e il Delirio flute and hammond organ starts suddenly to duet with immense pleasure for the listener (there's no brake between the tracks). So drums (slightly and unfortunately subdued) draw pleasant changing moods helped in the middle part by serious and hard electric guitar soloing. The second half of the tune is a sort of folk rythm thanks to violin, acoustic guitar, flute (which is used massively during the whole running time of the album) and clapping. My favourite track for sure. A gem. Excellent also the saxophone playing and the mix between heavy, classical, folk and bluesy rock souls.

Hammond is the favourite key of the band but moog also can ben found in some short episode. Passion is really the unknown ingredient of the band. You can only rest breathless after such a pure tour de force.
