I just got back from an excellent 40th anniversary concert on Thursday

evening. The Strawbs - an unusual progressive band whose roots go back to English folk rather than to psychedelica or rock - celebrated with approximately 325 enthusiastic fans in a fine venue, The Ram's Head On Stage. The show was almost sold-out as capacity is 350. As a matter of fact, I found that I liked this venue better than the famous Birchmere in Alexandria VA where I saw The Strawbs the last time that they played electric in the USA (more than a few years ago). Here you also get tableside service with fine food and drink.

The Strawbs received many standing ovations and delighted the crowd

with a well-chosen selection of favorites (including my own favorite:

"Autumn" into "Winterlong") from their classic 1970s albums 'Hero &

Heroine' and 'Grave New World' (including "Grave New World" itself),

and two songs from their new CD, 'The Broken Hearted Bride', which

will be released on Witchwood Records both in the USA and the UK in

September (pre-orders being taken now). They are filming the recording of their new CD.

The band was tight and enthusiastic and consisted of the classic

electric line-up of: Dave Cousins (lead vocalist, acoustic guitar),

Dave Lambert (electric lead guitar), Chas Cronk (electric bass

guitar), Rod Coombes (drums), and John Hawken (keyboards).

Dave Cousins came out after the show and spent a considerable amount of time talking with fans and signing autographs. He gave me a warm welcome and clearly remembers our extended interview of a year or so back. He very sadly recounted that his beloved white cat - that we

talked about in our interview - has since passed on although his fun,

active Jack Russell terrier is still in fine form. A download of this

interview was supposed to be available on Strawbsweb (see below) but I am not sure that it is as I haven't checked to see.

I strongly suggest that folks become (more) familiar with this active,

touring band (recently in Japan, N. Europe, Canada). Many band members are in their 60s yet show no signs of slowing down.
