He's one who's really hard to pin down. Three genre tags which first come to mind are: Avant-garde, jazz and minimalist. I'm not sure if that is any help, considering his later works have a different sound, if you like your sax I could suggest Sax Pax for a Sax which is a neat little number. I'm no real expert on him, just got a few album here and there, but those two albums I mentioned would be  good starting point. BTW, he's blind.

Yolk is pretty cool if you like uptempo slightly zeuhl inspired avant.  B/B+ from me (****)

Sounds good - what was the title [I heard something of theirs once, it was ok, but nothing stellar so I'm interested in trying more...]?

It's self-titled.

I also got Amygala's Complex Combat (sorta zeuhl), but it wasn't very good.

The middle of the album is the best; the opener and closer are among the weaker material, and I'm guessing you heard the opener.

I had Amygdala's first album and really struggled with the drum programing. Musically 'twasn't too bad, but I couldn't get my head 'round the lack of drummer - such an important facet in Zeuhl. Looking at the line-up tis apparent they've overcome this problem, but I'm still hesitant to invest in the disk.

I agree with this, though IF is an important word in the sentence. Unfortunately I'm not terribly fond of the style so it ended up being a mostly forgettable album.

It's really not worth it, and the drums have nothing to do with it. (re amygdala)

And yeah, I can see not liking Yolk, but they're pretty cool.  Definitely worth checking out, especially for a Koenji fan such as listennow

learning French with Magma:

I just found the Magma book by Antoine De Caunes [1978] (which is out of print for ages) as a free file (without the fotos). Antoine De Caunes  knew Vander quite well and it's an interesting inside look of the first Magma period, good to read & will beef up your French Wink:

I've heard of this book (by Mr Eurotrash himself) but I've never seen a copy before. Thanks for this Martin, although my French is so rusty that I don't know how much of it I'll be able to follow.

Ah yes, it's interesting to note how polar opposite Antoine de Caunes and Steve Davis are, yet both are stalwart Magmaites. Big%20smile

Let's just hope for our sakes, Jean-Paul Gauthier is not a fan... imagine Vander wearing some of his abominations!

Anyhow, good to see some debates here.  I have the new Amygdala and have yet to give it a spin.  I didn't dislike the debut but I do support your thoughts re: lack of drums and bass.

I will let you know my thoughts on the new release once I've heard it.

I've just listened to a Video Aventures album (actually their EP with extra tracks) and I must say it's very good.  Plus my new vocal discovery Han Buhrs randomly turns up on a track as well (he's friends with Guigou Chenevier).

Next up will be their full-length LP.

Hello all!

I *finally* received my double-CD of Present 'Triskaidekaphobie'/'Le Poison Qui Rend Fou' (having ordered it in early April!!) - just gave it a first listen and am Much Impressed! Big%20smile Thumbs%20Up  (Good job too after all that waiting...)

Very much looking forward now to FINALLY getting on with some more RIO etc. shopping.  (All that stuff people have been recommending... here I come!)  I wanted to wait until I'd heard this in case it wasn't for me (although I've liked most of the Present samples I've heard here and there).

(2008 has been chock-full of lovely discoveries so far.  I feel like the proverbial kid in the sweet shop...)

Well... uh... that's it really! Tongue  Time to get some sleep now...

:) :) isn't it great?!

rather music-blissed myself right now...today i received 2 o.p discs via e-bay that i've been looong searching for: Höyry-Kone's Hyönteisiä Voi Rakastaa [a pretty penny that!] and Akira Sakata's Fisherman's.com w/ Bill Laswell [Jpn release impossible to find in the US - I've been searching a year and a half!]
Also a nice package from Wayside:

Ur Kaos - Ur Kaos
Pavel Fajt / Pluto - Tri [Fabulous! may have to add it to the chart & send folks some samples...]
Alec K.Redfearn and the Eyesores - The Smother Party
Olive Mess - Gramercy
Gargantua - Kotegarda
Iva Bittova & Pavel Fajt - Svatba
Factor Burzaco - Factor Burzaco
Septimania - Welcome To Septimania

i ordered Yonhosago - Album 1 (Descuento) also,  but they were sold out :(

what glee-hee-hee!

Oooh, I want that Hoyry-kone album as well. Cry

You're a very luck person, Cleo.

Donna, how familiar with Univers Zero are you?  I would definitely try and find either Heresie or Ceux du Dehors, if you have not already.

Also check out Shub-Niggurath, if you can find their CDs.

Hey James, how are you?! It's been a while..

indeedy! paid far too much for it though...decided it was ok though as I've hardly spent a cent on CDs for months now - very difficult and very unlike me! lol..ah, justification...;)

re: Univers Zero - Heatwave & UZED are by far my favorites

btw - did you folks know that most of the early Art Zoyd catalog has FINALLY been released on CD? mini-LPs from Japan. They're really nice, and the sound is superb. Expensive, but in the US w/ the horrid exchange rate, really not much more than most CDs from overseas now...[Squidco has them cheaper than anyone else in the us.]

I'm good thanks, Cleo.  Thanks for the nice welcome.

I have all those Art Zoyd releases.  I've only played the first one so far.  Some of the bonus material is a bit so-so (but then it is from when they had a completely different lineup!).

I have heard Hyontesei Von Rakastaa though and it's a wonderful album.  I think I prefer it to Huonu Parturi (which I would also like to find on CD).

Any idea where I can find Shub-Niggurath albums?  I'm presuming Greg or Wayside has some but I am not sure.

I haven't bought any CDs for quite some time either.  I've kind of steered away from music for a while but now I'm returning back to it again slowly.  Besides, I have a backlog of unlistened to CDs to play!

Greg has both for $15. each - he's at Nearfest through Tuesday though.

(Hehe, I should be less confusing about names... it's really Melissa.  You can call me Donna if you like though.  But I draw the line at Donald... Tongue LOL)

UZ is totally on my list.  I wasn't that immediately grabbed by the snippets I heard, but it's not necessarily an 'instant love' kind of thing, by all accounts.  I'm having a birthday in a couple of weeks... (Cry - going to be old!  Well, slightly 'less young'...) - all being well there might be some musical pressies (Strong Hints were dropped!), possibly including Univers Zero... we'll just have to see how far my nearest and dearest wants to encourage my 'weird taste in music'... LOL

I'm sure I'll get round to Shub Niggurath at some point.  That is one evil-sounding name, by the way!!
