The South African anthem is very nice, it has excellent vocal arrangements. I love the version with African percussion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APGZiMcDvYY&feature=related

I find the "possibly to be anthem" of Finland very prog. We have a boring now, but there's a petition going, getting a lot of names listed for making Sibelius - Finlandia Hymn as our official national anthem. At least, this time the composer would be Finnish, and the lyricist would be Finnish-speaking. The problem is, most people won't be able to sing it.

From very (unreliable) memory, I think the Italian anthem has a really bizarre sudden tempo change in the middle which always strikes me as a tad 'proggy'

If that happensa, Finland will officially be the country with the best anthem in the world... I love Sibelius, his 7 symphonies, his violin concerto, KArelia, etc... but "Finlandia" is amazing.., Sometimes it makes me shiver, and I'm not finnish..... I hope that happens...
About Germany, yes, I was wrong about the name of the anthem... I was actually confused about the title, as it;'s quite nationalistic..and you've given me the information I needed... But Haydn's melody is great... I use to know all the lyrics, as I studied in a german-oriented school in Quito... (Deutsche Schule Quito)...(I'm not german at all by the way.. that's how things are in southamerica: there are "German schools" or "french schools" or "american schools".... Americans here never understand that concept of internationally-oriented education...)
By the way, Ecuador's national anthem, which many people in my country say is "second in the world after La MArsellaise", well, I think it's just an awful march... it sucks...

Without doubts the Peruvian National Anthem:
You can check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Anthem_of_Peru And http://www.mindef.gob.pe/menu/historicos/himno/himno.htm the short version sung by Tenor Juan Diego Florez.

BTW, the (relatively) new Russian anthem kept the music unchanged. Only the verse is different.

That's right! It starts with a martial, slowish tempo, and then it suddenly speeds up.... Moreover, it's so pompous and bombastic (and that's just for the music... you should hear the lyrics!) that it MUST be prog! |

In a certain sense, all national anthems are "prog" not only for the music but also for the lyrics that are epic-like ones showing an imaginary and desired land with many exquisite metaphors supplied by different rhymes and unusual and rare words.

Rhapsody of Fire should write a national anthem... It would be so heroic... We just need a land with dragons though....

"God Save the Queen" as played by Gentle Giant.
As to the "Deutschland über alles" part of the German national anthem: Actually it no longer IS a part of the German national anthem (though it appears in the original lyrics of Hoffmann von Fallersleben); on the contrary, it is forbidden to sing that verse in Germany. When these lyrics were written they meant something totally different; there was no united Germany, just a few principalities in which German was spoken. Von Fallersleben wanted these principalities to unite to form Germany, as it finally happened in 1871; he was not of the opinion that Germany is superior to other nations, as the Nazis interpreted this verse. The first verse of von Fallersleben's poem, in which this passage appears, is never sung. For official purposes always only the third verse of the poem is used, and this third verse is the official national anthem of Germany. Here the full lyrics of the poem:

Absolutely, great anthem; I wish it were more symphony oriented, I mean not always been played with that awful military sounding drums. Edited by electricsilence - June 12 2008 at 19:23 |
