Of the ones I know (I hope I'm not biased), I think Argentina's the proggiest. It is very long for a national anthem (four minutes) with a dynamic classical overture, tempo changes, an instrumental section in the middle and a bombastic finale. There's an instrumental version that sounds way better but I can't find it in youtube.

any other national anthems?

PS: I don't know in what forum to put this in, whether the lounge or 'just for fun'. Free free to move it.

Original thread! Though there's not enough material to keep it alive for long.

La Marseillaise is the best. As is Deutschland Uber Alles.

The proggiest National Anthem is England's unofficial one: Jerusalem by Blake and Parry, as covered by ELP  - followed closely by its 'official' one: Elgar's Land Of Hope And Glory, as performed by The Enid

Zitro, can you believe a week ago in my school in an act of patriotism when they played the anthem I thought(kidding), hey it's kinda proggy.
Though I forgot to tell it here.

Very cool and original thread indeed. Argentina is a Prog Country, is it?

And I laugh every time I hear "our home and native land".

Lyrically, a truly progressive national anthem would be the one that doesn't exist.

If "Stars and Stripes Forever" were our anthem which it kind of is in a way, that would be it!  (USA) If you listen to Chet Atkins play it it is all over the place with timing and key changes.

My country (South Africa) has a national anthem comprised of four parts, each sung in a different language (isiXhosa, isiZulu, Afrikaans and English) and with totally different melodies and time signatures and stuff. That's very prog. It's called "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika".

What would Neil Young do?

actually, now it's “einigkeit und recht und freiheit“ (unity, justice, liberty) – the one you
mentioned is from the nazi times (same melody though)

John Lennon's 'Nutopian National Anthem' from Mind Games. It's about 2 seconds of silence...The run-off groove. Now that's prog.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

You're both right and wrong. The German national anthem is the "Deutschlandlied". The lyrics were written by Hoffmann von Fallersleben in 1841. The first verse starts with the words "Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles", the third verse with "Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit". During the time of the nazi-regime only the first verse was sung, nowadays the third verse is sung and was declared national anthem after the reunification. The melody, by the way, is "borrowed" from the "Kaiserhymne", which Joseph Haydn wrote for Austrian emperor Franz II.
"Auferstanden aus Ruinen" indeed was the national anthem of the former GDR. Interesting enough the lyrics of both of the national anthems can be sung to the melody of the other and vice versa.
