Still haven't obtained any more Caravan, bah. Although I must admit they're probably among my least favorite Canterbury bands, the only good thing is that means they're still awesome.

I Love all things Caravan , i have had Dog on a old badly recorded tape for many a year, i now finally have all the Caravan albums i want on vinyl , Girl grows Plump will always be my fav i think along with Canterbury Tales , Tales is such a good pressing even though it's a best off i find it makes a damn fine album in its own right .

Nicely done!
Lots of people find it a disappointment compared to their more 'classic' albums, but I've always had a soft spot for it. I have the vinyl framed on my wall.

That should be good. I'm staying in Rome for quite a few days, so I'll have time to check it out in detail.
As for North American music stores... I consider myself incredibly lucky if I find so much as a Gentle Giant album.

I'll tell you about the ones I know in Rome and Florence, because I don't know the other cities that well (though I've been there, of course). Mainstream music stores don't stock very rare stuff, as you would expect, but still you can find a much larger selection of good music (prog or otherwise) than I have ever seen in US mainstream stores, like FYE or Best Buy (compilation heaven !).

Ooh! Whereabouts can I find some nice ones? I'm visiting Italy this summer. (Rome, Venice, Florence, Naples and Livorno)

Thank heavens that some good music can still be found in Italian music stores (of the brick-and-mortar variety, of course!). I'd better get used to not finding much else but compilations when I move to the USA ...
BTW, welcome to our new Canterbury fan ! No Canterbury-related purchases from me this week, I'm afraid..

I gave up on actual music stores long ago. Welcome to the Canterbury thread!

That's a wonderful record, as is its follow-up. I was so lucky as to find a boxset of both of them for just €10 (courtesy of Milan's one and only BTF store). When I get back home later in the day I'll give Present for Nancy a spin while I go about my usual business.

Just ordered Blind Dogs on CD cos I miss playing the vinyl so much. CS, Blind Dogs and BBF make up a trilogy of incredible Caravan albums. ' Who Am I' and ' John Waynes single handed liberation of Paris'- awesome stuff.

YES, Richard Sinclair sings only one song, but the meat of the album---the 2 10mns tracks-- is great and it is the most jazzy CARAVAN i have heard...and the bass of SINCLAIR is an absolute treat on those tracks.Sure i could have survived without the silly short Hastings tracks (Aristocracy, etc). Steve Miller (if my memory is intact ) on keys brings some ''Soft Machine'' athmosphere with his el-piano
My love for Caravan stopped with this album.....never was able to keep up with Hastings voice for a whole album...but that's just me i guess! |
My thoughts exactly. Though I do love For Girls...,, it's mostly because of the instrumental parts (I think Geoff Richardson's viola was a great addition to the sound of the band). It's not that Hastings is a bad singer, just that his voice sounds somewhat irritating to me, and his songwriting is not the best in the world.

This was the
first in a series of short stints. As Daevid Allen once
recalled : "Laurie was one of the most interesting drummers
we ever played with. He would play differently every night,
and when he couldn't think of a different way to approach
it, he would leave the band. He was wonderful to play with,
very sensitive... and also very paranoid, he would always
play with his back to the wall, he was scared that somebody
had to kill him...".
and
And
Allan
was of course the drummer (alongside Nick Mason) at Wyatt's
Drury Lane concert in September 1974 (Wyatt later described
the trio of Dave Stewart, Hugh Hopper and Laurie Allan as "my
dream rhythm section").
Oooh, now that would be a good rhythm section indeed!
Oh and one more bit:
Any particular memories of
Gong?
YES!!! I never got paid for any of the records
