Why do I have to a Noobie - what do I have to do to leave this behind? I suppose you should say "Noobie" in the way that Dr. Cox says it on "scrubs" then I can cope with it...
You can probably guess what I like from the name (and from my reviews...). I'm in my 40's and of old I loved Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Gong, Traffic and ELP. I lost much interest in music during the 80's when music seemed to go very bad, but I had a revival particularly in Pink Floyd, Genesis and Jethro Tull about 5 years ago. When my wife told me to stop "living in the past" so much (I bought another copy of "Living in the Past" by JT to really wind her up), I decided to try some new bands that could give me the music of the old days - with the added bonus of being able to see them live and take the kids - so I turned to your website, and found Porcupine Tree, Mars Volta, Oceansize, Amplifier, Ozric tentacles etc... (what others would you recommend?) The name Pink Pangolin is a combination of my love for Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree's music - Pangolin being a little close to Porcupine - and interestingly Pangolins was the name of an imaginary band I made up when I was a kid, but never came to pass (despite doing my own tapes of their music). Imagine my fascination when I found out that "Porcupine Tree" was formed on the same basis (Steve Wilson doing his own tapes of their music!)! And yet (unlike the Pangolins) did become for real!!!!!!!! Especially 'Pangolin' being so close to 'Porcupine' in name!!!!! |

Everyone new here starts that way. I worked my way up to four star prog reviewer fairly quickly by writing some good reviews that caught the attention of at least one person higher on the food chain here. I'm in my 40's, too. You will find more stuff on this site old and new than you'll probably be able to handle. My philosophy is never turn your back on or give up the old stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to find a new generation of prog musicians as well as a new generation of prog frans here.
On the new side, I'd recommend Pure Reason Revolution, Talisma, Pineapple Thief, Parallel Mind, Phideaux, The Reasoning. Already into Porcupine Tree and Ozric Tentacles, discovered before I found this site. I'm not sure how you make it to five star status, I'm thinking you have to sleep with a five star member or something. Edited by Slartibartfast - May 18 2008 at 07:17 |

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

Welcome Pinkpangolin! See you've been helped on your way already.
As for the five start thingy: are you sure you want that many up your sleeve? It takes 100 forum posts to get past Newbie, so just stick around! |

Doesn't it take 20 to become a Groupie, and then 100 to become a Senior Member? Edit; Oh yeah, almost forgot: Magma. Edited by Shakespeare - May 18 2008 at 11:17 |

Howdy from Texas and welcome to the club. As far as being a noobie, it's a lot better than having to wear a beanie with a propeller on top and wearing a tee shirt that says "Elvis lives!" I, too, like some of the groups you mentioned and I'd recommend "Space Revolver" by the Flower Kings. I think you'd love it. |

Thank you for your replies you important senior guys!! It's nice to know someone's listening. Thank you for your suggetsed bands etc.. as well. I'll have to look into those!
As for the suggested 20 or 100 posts, my number of 6 seems rather paltry to your thousands! Don't reviews count for anything? I have 38 I think.... As for the title "Groupie" - is that better than "noobie"? Not sure I'm feminine enough!! Thanks again! |

Not sure I like the term "Groupie" though (not sure what it implies!!) What have you got to do to reach "Senior Member" ??!!?? |
