I have the one in Rome as well...  it is a great show.  There are some that say ...who knows really if there is truth to it that Pete got his idea for the stage get-ups from the Italian band Osanna.. .who they toured Italy with. Who knows... but Osanna predates them on that.

This is an interesting one that I've heard several times from different people.  it's hard to tell either way, but for what it's worth, I've seen a few interviews with Pete from '71/'72 on the Italian tour, and he had the trademark "cut" out of his hair in the front.  I dont' know if it was there prior to the tour, but it was at some point during.

If memory serves me, I believe he did that right before a festival in England called the Reading Festival in August of 1972, designed to shock the audiences a little. He also started wearing some kind of Egyptian jewelry at the same time.  That was after they did some shows in Italy earlier that year, but right after that they went back to Italy for more shows, which is where that footage could be from. I will have to check my Genesis histories to be sure.

yes.. I've heard the same.. just wasn't sure enough of the details to post it.. figured you'd pick up on that.. I thought it was Reading '72.
that could be it.  He had been telling the stories for some time by then to make the lengthy tuning parts less awkward.  Given the band's growing theatrical approach, I wouldn't be surprised if a group like Osanna would appeal to them, and even influence them enough to borrow an idea or two (which may have been quite an honor seeing that Genesis were huge in Italy at the time).

well, heck, it wasn't Reading, it was Lincoln at the Great Western Express festival on May 28, 1972 according at least to a book called Genesis: Behind the Lines:

"The days of starting with quiet acoustic numbers were over (they started with Watcher for the first time there), and that wasn't the only change: shortly before the Lincoln performance, Gabriel gave himself a makeover, shaving off a portion of his hair at the front, then adding eyeliner and an Egyptian style necklace.

The new look was, Gabriel admitted, a shameless attempt to get his picture in the music papers and to get the band some coverage."

And Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra....Clap. Enjoying it to pieces. Those rough vocals are only enhancing the experience.

That's another I'm looking forward to hearing before long.  From the sample in PA, I agree about the rough vocals...I would say that's a general rule for me with Italian prog, the vocals (which are the deal-breaker for many who struggle with RPI) add the dramatic flair; appeals to the Genesis/Van der Graaf fan in me.

Alrighty, some of my stuff came yesterday and I've listened to what I could...

Confessione has been stuck in my head relentlessly, at least when RIP doesn't already occupy that position.  I just listened to Metamorphosi for the first time, I like to describe it but the only thing I can think of is Holy sh*t!LOL Those Nocenzi brothers are somethin'.

Awesome track, the best one on the album for sure. Actually I should put it on right now...

they are quite somethin'... and the neighbors were noisy again last night.. so I think I will as well.. at loud decibel levels LOL

Napoli Centrale - s/t (1975)
Il Reale Accademia di Musica - s/t (1972)
Area - Caution Radiation Area (1974)
Area - Are(A)zione (1975)
Fabrizio di Andre & PFM - In Concerto vol. 1 (1979)

I finally found the PFM/Fabrizio album on cd, I've been looking for a while, it's a great place for the ignorant prog fan, such as myself, to begin with Italian folk music.

GREAT choices... and I do LOVE those Fabrizio/PFM albums....  it's only Italian Folk.. but I like it ..like it .. yes I DO!  hahahah.

Let me know what you think of that Napoli Centrale album...  I got that in Rome last year and has slowly grown on me.

Not very many places, to be honest. I'm a lazy git.

Actually, yeah, it's available on Laser's Edge, which I may have to go to for my next spree, free of the evil clutches of amazon.

Hm. Only two RPI albums for this spree. I'm feeling minimalistic.

amen to that ..  though I've used Amazon to great effect for my Krautrock collection...  I was able to find some great stuff via Amazon.  Not much on the Italian side.

Couldn't get Tanz on amazon (UK, at least). I was not impressed. On the plus side, some of the McDonald-Giles/Cross material was there for a less-than-extortionate price.

Think I might get Phallus Dei first, just to round off the early section.

Still, facade of RPI discussion... Ys is good, no?

I listened to Per Un Amico again today, and it still has very little emotional/visual effect on me, excluding the first song.

I haven't finished..  in fact.. at this rate.. may never finished my planned review assaut on ADII.  But I do recommend.. like Magma.. that you work your way chronologically through them.. . I love the way the sound changes.. through each album.  I sort of get off on seeing how artists mature.. change... ahhh.. progress through their albums.

*end of ADII hijacking of the blessed RPI thread hahha*

Ys is .. a beast.  Good doesn't begin to describe it.. even a hard-ass like Dr. Prog singing it's praises speaks volumes for it LOL

There is something in Per Un Amico that does have an 'effect' on me..  have never put my finger on it.. one reason I have never reviewed it.  Though in all honesty.. have purposefully stayed away from reviewing albums of the big 3.  Have tried to shine some light on the lesser known albums and groups
