Does anyone know if the genre rating is taken from genres on last.fm or your personal audio player?

i think just last fm. i have so many more artists not on my computer. any more its rare i listen to music on the computer at all and do so mostly through my iPod and its various audio outlets (oooooo, fancey) Last.fm hasnt updated my playlist for any of those songs/artists played via iPod or portable device. . . might have a completely different outcome. for example. my lastfm page says i like jimi hendrix and eric clapton MUCH more than i do. its almost embarassing. Embarrassed

Mine's quite high, which is pleasing:

Bare in mind too, that a lot of the obscure stuff I listen to, probably hasn't been tagged by me yet.  I have tried to personally tag as many of the bands I listen to as possible, though.

Also, a lot of the music I listen to is on CD and CDs don't always like my PC (my computer doesn't have enough RAM really, plus I have a lot of applications open), so therefore much of my avant-jazz/Canterbury/fusion isn't listed.

A band like Magma, for instance, seems to be tagged as Progressive Rock and secondly as Zeuhl, which means that the Zeuhl tag won't get any votes on this system.

So it is flawed if the band is tagged incorrectly.

Another thing: there are often several bands with the same name.  Egg, for example.  Now if you listen to the Canterbury Scene Egg, it will likely be tagged as something completely different, because there is another band/artist called Egg that is more popular than the Canterbury Scene Egg.  Until last.fm can find a way of separating such bands, then this problem will remain.

something like

I don't think this bit of software is smart enough to tell how open-minded you already are since a lot of these tags are very similar. you can't really say you're open-minded if all you listen to is rock, even if you span alt, math, goth, hard, prog and punk ;P

This is from the 5 or 6 bands I've listened to since making a new account.

It seems the majority of us listen to music that has "other last.fm-tags", which is understandable, especially if you have mislabelled tags for Canterbury and Zeuhl bands.

My review isn't really even started yet and it's longer than most n00b's reviews... but not as long as a Laplace review.  I'll try and make it as lengthy as your Ayreon one.
