Great band, Jody. One of my favourites. I have a track of theirs as my MySpace tune.

I'm still deciding who I prefer: Upsilon Acrux or Ahleuchatistas

Both are brilliant. Have you heard the latter yet?

As an aside: Ahleuchatistas have had one of their albums remastered and had extra tracks put on it. It's available over at Wayside Music/Cuneiform Records.

Alas, I have the original version. I'm not sure whether to get this updated copy yet.

I agree about the music sounding more mystical (some of the guitar work reminds me of the latest Grails album) then anything they're released prior, also, i don't remember them ever sounding so vigorous. (of course, all i know besides "Elixirs", is "Black Oni" & "Twisted Stems")

Ah, definitely a good one, I agree with you.

As for Ahleuchatistas that James mentioned, I'm not particularly thrilled about them and I'd take UA over them.

Oh I enjoy Ahleuchatistas, but I do think I prefer Upsilon Acrux to them.

I need to listen to Cheval de Frise again, I've heard all their material once so far.

btw, if you folks have not checked out Cartoon yet, I highly recommend their "Sortie" album, which features both of their albums on one disc (couresy of you know who: Cuneiform recs). super adventurous stuff, which has rich compositional complexity, exceptional layering, time variations galore, really outstanding stuff here! recommended for fans of U Totem, Univers Zero, Henry Cow (you know the usual grandfathers). This is more RIO than avant, but declares some avant dialogue here and there. as a bonus, the guitar parts are all fuzzed out and distorted, kind of makes them sound heavy (for the metal fans out there who also like RIO).
I am really enjoying Sortie, refreshing stuff, even timeless I might add. their hayday was in the early eighties, but after touring in Europe, all of their gear got ripped off, so they called it quits (sadly this type of thing happens real often). Members went on to PFS, which I plan to check into next.

really happening stuff here, psychedelic/complex/classical mindf**kery/lots of variety and change-ups....essentially perfect for those with musical ADD, even though it is well-thought out.

PFS are much more classically-orientated. They're very good though. However, if you listen to their bootleg live album, it's completely different and more akin to Cartoon.

You may also want to check out American contemporaries Pocket Orchestra. All of their material has been put onto CD and it's amazing stuff.

on second thought, the second album included on Sortie "Music from left field", is just that, very avant garde (contrary to what I said earlier) stuff. I'll be playing the f**k out of this one for the next couple of weeks!

I'm listening to Pocket Orchestra again now, as it happens.

It's brilliant and ahead of its time.

It's hard to describe really. It's classical, jazzy (elements of Weather Report), symphonic, heavy (but not metally), psychotic (lots going at times), virtuoistic and all sorts of other stuff.

The best way to find out is to try and hear it, if you can.

Let me try and condense it down a bit:

Guapo (in the cacophonous stakes anyhow)
Weather Report and other similar jazz
Univers Zero/Present
Cartoon
5uu's/other Kerman projects
NeBeLNeST (only far far better and much more creative)
4/3 de Trio
Taal

I prefer Ahleuchatistas, but both are fabulous.

If you don't know them, Hella are the best of this brutal prog movement. Hold Your Horse Is is a mindblowing album.

Also, Zs are a very awesome math rock type band. The CD Arms is well worth checking out.

I saw that a couple years ago when it originally aired. I didn't know who Zorn was, and I really cracked up when I remembered that Colbert had mentioned him on his show.
