Truly heartbreaking news:

NEW YORK - Danny Federici, the longtime keyboard player for Bruce Springsteen whose stylish work helped define the E Street Band’s sound on hits from “Hungry Heart” through “The Rising,” died Thursday. He was 58.

Federici, who had battled melanoma for three years, died at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. News of his death was posted late Thursday on Springsteen’s official Web site.

He last performed with Springsteen and the band last month, appearing during portions of a March 20 show in Indianapolis.

Very sad, indeed.  His understated work on some of the E Street Band's best material is essential.  Just listen to "Jungleland" for example and you'll know how great he was.  May God comfort his family and friends.

i guess no one on this site cares about Springsteen much. or maybe it's cause i live in Jersey and everyone knows Bruce. My aunt lives only a few miles from his home.

anyway, RIP Danny.

For about three weeks now I've been really getting into Bruce's music, and this was some sad news when I finally knew enough about the band to realize what a huge part of the music he was. The best part of the E Street Band is that no one person is really the best. Obviously Bruce is the main draw, but in terms of sound everyone is really equal. Danny's interplay with Roy, Bruce, Clarence et al made him as essential as everyone else. Although I downloaded a copy of the Tampa show after his passing and the band seemed determined to carry on and put on what will probably go down as one of their best. I've also heard good things about most of the newer shows, though a few have been criticized for lacking set list and performance focus, which is most likely a by-product of them trying to tour through their grief.

R.I.P. Danny, you'll be missed.
