I am planning on going, which would be my 6th Nearfest in the last 8 years.

I can afford the odd record now and then. And the occasional bottle of whiskey, to be enjoyed in the best of company. That's what's important right now. Uomo Di Pezza is getting a LOT of plays right now...

oh god... Whiskey... haven't touched that in years.  My mentor drank Jack Daniels by the case... and I was a willing disciple in the church of drunken debauchery.

I knew you'd love it...  far and away my favorite from them... but they really are ALL great albums.. that album though...  really hits hard.  Love it. Clap

Not as impressed by Felona E Sorona though...but still one heck of an album!

LinusW
4%20stars Continuing with my exploration in the world of RPI, the turn has now come the second of its three giants, namely Le Orme. Blinded by the light that PFM turned out to be, I was eagerly anticipating more Italian prog, and in retrospect I might have expected just a little to much. At first I actually found Felona E Sorona hugely disappointing, and I constantly lost attention during the first listens.

But with so many glowing reviews and recommendations, you're always left with this feeling that you must be mistaken, that the rest of the world stands laughing at your ignorance, leaving you confused and frustrated wondering what's wrong. So luckily, I gave it more time. And that changed, if not all, at least a great deal of my opinions considering the album.

Le Orme plays a very keyboard-oriented kind of prog and just as with ELP, the occasional guitar is more an exception than a rule. But the sharp angularity that often riddles the works of Keith Emerson is transformed into a more mellow, melodic and melancholic form by Le Orme. Being a mixture of darker and lighter songs, it still is the melancholia that stands out. Compared to PFM's Per Un Amico, this is a very, very gloomy album, almost disturbing at times. Lonely. This is something the band achieves with great skill and success, making use of all you can get from the keys at that time. Pompous, soaring organ for atmosphere and texture, intricate melodies, classically arranged piano and spaced-out effects form the basis, or rather, IS Felona E Sorona. Even the sometimes flamboyant, skillfull and heavy drumming of Michi Dei Rossi or the times when Aldo Tagliapietra's bass enters from its place somewhere down in the massive keys' undergrowth can't prevent that.

When listening to the album you realise that there are very few highlights among the nine songs. And since this equals consistency and sticking to the concept of the album it is in some way a good characteristic. But it's just the same thing that, together with the clear, smooth voice of Aldo's that make the album very concentrated and hard to grasp. It seldom rises from the mellow mid-tempo, songs lack clear hooks and crescendos and it just gets a little blurry after a while. Aldo never reaches emotional peaks, his phrasing remains innocent, emotional and sad, even though he's got a fantastic voice I immediately accepted and praised. It's no wonder then that my two stand-out tracks are the opening and the closer, Sospesi Nell Íncredibile and Ritorno Al Nulla respectively. Because these tracks are the ones that adds some true dynamics to the album, with some much desired action and surprising changes. The latter of the two is one of the most stunning album finals I've heard so far, which says a lot. Ending with an unrivaled feeling of feverish uncertainty.

Just as with PFM's L'Isola Di Niente I feel some amount of irritation and slight disappointment after hearing Felona E Sorona. But this is amazing music nonetheless, perhaps with more time and in the right mood I'll learn to appreciate it fully, but as it is right now, it doesn't stand out as a masterpiece. 3,5 stars, going for 4 for talent and the opening and closing tracks.

That one and L'Isola Di Niente are the only RPI albums I've reviewed the last week or so...been doing some other "forgotten" albums the last few days. And as I said earlier...really looking forward to that list of "forgotten" gems of the genre. Will be sure to read that through both one and five times LOL

I see it that you've got your feet wet in way...  you can go towards Banco  the other of the big 3... but of the big 5 they honestly are the least listened to for me.  But for Metamorfosi on their debut album... the track in contrast to the analogy I often make to my beloved Battiato albums..is a song you NEED to put on before heading out out on the town for a wild night out.

Lots of people swear on Darwin..  ehh... good album.. but it never 'grabbed' me.  Io Sono Nato Libero  might be my favorite album from them.

of the 'lesser' of the big 5.. .ooohhh... I can't wait for you to 'discover' Osanna.. and the prog masterpiece  that is Palepoli.  Area is an incredible group as well.

then there are .. all the gems.. the lesser known groups.. the single shot album groups.. so damn much to explore.  I'll draw you up a list of something like that this weekend.

in the meantime.. find Palepoli... this review by David says it all..  may have posted it here earlier...

is in an eternal duel with Ys for favorite prog album ever...

5%20stars One eventually gets it, this album, and why the 70s Italian scene was much more than pristine symphonics and precious cherubs. A few spins may be required though, and Osanna were not Banco. But they were terribly progressive and they rocked. The quintet also happened to be incredible musicians, it's just that they were a rebel-rock band first and made no apologies for that. 18 minutes of sheer heavy progdom is 'Oro Caldo', a raw jambalaya of moody atmosphere, experimental samplings, greasy garage dirt, and some flat out classic symphonic prog with a great-sounding mellotron - and other unique and wonderful synth sounds - from Lino Vairetti. Plus the hot flute riffs of Elio D'Anna, absolutely smokin' rhythm section Massimo Guarino (drums) and Lello Brandi (bass), and lo-fi blooz chunks of guitarist Danilo Rustici. But there is so much more going on here it could require months, maybe years, to sort it all out and fully absorb this recording. More than prog rock, with a pull toward the avant garde but never slipping too far away. The session has an inviting, casual tone wherein everyone is welcome to listen and even participate, deep dreams and strange parties abound, plenty of texture, sensuality and odd people... like watching an orgy but not sure if you should join in. The set reminds at times of modern theater as well (i.e. 'Hair'), but shouts out with heavy mercury and constant invention. 'Animale Senza Respiro' takes over for the second half as things really begin to come on. The drugs have kicked-in, man, and it keeps getting better with some ripping guitar and hot band interplay, D'Anna's disjointed saxophones, wild changes, and bathtubs filled with lysergic trips. It all climaxes with the melodic and powerful voice of Vairetti and a bit of insanity, and leaves the listener wondering what they just heard in a very good way. Fabulous, and recommended.

^^ Really don't know what to make of that review, except that it sure made me curious Smile
When it comes to Banco, I've listened to the samples here, but I've never felt that immediate attraction I want from albums...perhaps a pity. But I still feel I should try something else before them? Oh, what about Alphataurus?

actually... his review is damn letter perfect...  you simply have to listen to it to make sense of it... Oro Caldo is.. or was a sample here.  Not bad.. literally half the album was a streaming sample here.  Check it out if it still is there.

ohhh... I'm not the person  to ask...  I like Alphataurus.. but have never seen like some have ..that it ranks as a masterpiece in the genre.   Honestly.. when I put them in.. it is usually to hear the lead track Peccato d'Orgoglio which is a sample here.. .and a killer song.. but for me the rest of the album didn't hold up. However I am one of the few that I think feels that way.. a lot of people love that album.  So who knows hahha.

Appreciating that Osanna sample. Much to take in, though. Could be a great next move. We'll see. Keep them  recommendations coming, especially if they have a sample to accompany them Thumbs%20Up

Apparently, according to my listen of the samples here a moment ago, I need several Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso albums. I knew I should stay out of threads like this LOL

Also, I felt that this'd be the place to fawn over Il Balletto Di Bronzo's Ys. Hug

the great thing is... as great as Oro Caldo is...the 2nd track on Palepoli.. Animale Senza Respiro...  blows Oro Caldo away. Man alive is that a stunning track.

one more before I head off for the night...  a sample from this album...not my favorite track from the album.. but I think you might love this album.. in my top 10 prog albums...not just from RPI.  I adore this group and it's single album...

http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=535

the track Un Palco di Marionette...  simply a great piece of music.  love it to death
