Some people think its cheesy, but I couldn't care less if everybody in the known universe hates it.   It defines prog metal, and that's good enough for me!

steve j, don't you think that Symphony X's ''The Odyssey'' is just as good? Maybe even a little . . . y'know . . . better?

You folks have tossed out way too many amazing tracks!

For myself, I'll settle for Wright's Great Gig in the Sky. Toast it to a golden brown by the Floyd video of it done at the Versailles Palace.

Last Statement - Insomnium, especially the last two minutes (with solo) are breathtaking.

Just to say you are not alone, Insomnium is a great band following in the tradition of Amorphis. I never thought of them having any "Prog" influence in the traditional sense (this site is very untraditional) but people on this site would really dig them. Good choice my friend!

Very different, but it put me in mind of one my absolute favourite tracks: Art Zoyd's "Musique pour l'odyssee."

Hard one...
Right now, it'd have to be "The Calling" by Yes.  Dig the huge groove.

I gave it a chance, and honestly, it is one of the worst prog-metal albums I've ever heard (IMO). For me Dream Theater defines prog metal, and they're top in the genre.

Wow, top prog song, huh? Damn, that's a hard one............

It would have to be....

The Cinema Show- Genesis.

It took a long time to think this one. I have many favorite prog songs, like Karn Evil 9, Close to the Edge, Supper's Ready, Atom Heart Mother, Magnum Opus from Kansas, and many others, but the cinema show would be my favorite of them all.

Would you like some Bailey's?

Top songs for me vary constantly.  How could it be otherwise? We have different moods, we face changing circumstances and what's most important we can only listen to one song at a time...
If there was one absolute top song, then I would be playing it over and over again; otherwise it couldn't be a top song in the first place; I mean nobody would waste his or her time with inferior stuff, now would they?

It's very difficult to say just one... songs by Rush, Magma, and many others come to mind.

BUT

This time I'll go with.....

"Watermelon in Easter Hay" by Frank Zappa.

Perfect guitar tone, wonderful instrumentation, probably one of the most emotional pieces I've ever heard.

"Cinema Show"! That's definitely up there at the top of my list as are the others you mentioned.

The Odyssey just might be the best song, or maybe Baba Yetu.  Haha i bet nobody has ever heard of that song.  It's a choral song but it blows me away every time I hear it,
