I think it is difficult to understand the real differences between symphonic and no. I remain convinced of the idea expressed in my previous post. It is true that if we are talking about musical genre many lists here proposed are not going well. But I think that if an album that sounds symphonic...  It is Black Metal, waltz or symphonic Prog an album remain a great symphonic album. and this expesses the list proposed in this thread.

But don't forget you need WELL WRITTEN REASONS for including it on your list if you want to propose the album as being symphonic.

2. HOCUS POCUS: THE BEST OF FOCUS (Focus)
3. MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE SNOW GOOSE (Camel)
4. A SONG FOR ALL SEASONS (Renaissance)
5. ANTICO TEATRO DA CAMERA (Gianni D'Errico)
6. PAMPERED MENIAL (Pavlov's Dog)
7. ARGUS (Wishbone Ash)
8. BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
9. FORSE LE LUCCIOLE NON SI AMANO PIù (Locanda Delle Fate)
10. A CONCERT FOR THE PEOPLE (BERLIN) (Barclay James Harvest)

Really? I dont know if you are familiar with the original PA ulyimate albums list, but Dan is going to take all the votes and make a list to number 1. This time around he's doing all the symphonic albums, meaning the albums listed under Symph, Neo, and Italian, IT'S NOT HARD.

We dont need to know your opinion on whats symphonic or not, just play by the guidlines (this goes to everyone), what is hard about it, just play by the rules. Also Dan said a list between 20 and fifty, thats not hard also.

By whom?

Symphonic in Prog is a determined sub-genre based in a structure and an influence of what is wrongly known as Classical Music blended with Rock mainly.

So, in my opinion, 'Birds Of Fire' is no less  symphonic of 'Argus' or 'Close To The Edge' of 'Sped Metal Simphony' (by Cacophony). In fact change the musical genre but not the symphonics elements.

I see no Symphonic and a too complex structure in Birds of Fire to be considered Symphonic, their only main relation is JAZZ.

In conclusion if there (even in prog) symphonic genre is true that symphonic album is not only the prerogative of symphonic prog.

Not true, how in hell can Jazz or Psyche or  Post Rock be considered Symphonic? They represent a totally different side of the Prog spectrum, unless you're talking about an eclectic album like Jean Luc Ponty's "Aurora", but even in that case where the Symphonic structure is present, it's too Jazz oroiiented to be in any other place rather than in Fusion.

Welcome if you're new here.....Something I'm not sure. Wink

im not really big into symphonic as a genre but can i list some of my favorite albums from it?
it wont be anywhere near 50 and probably not even 20 but if you'll count it ill give it a go.

1. Yes - Close to the Edge
2. Yes - Fragile
3. ELP - ELP
4. ELP - Trilogy
5. Yes- Relayer
6. Le Orm - Uomo Di Pezza
7. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
8. Yes - Yessongs
9. ELP - Tarkus
10. King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King (you can chose to count this or not but ive seen others list it and would tend to agree that this is very symphonic)
11. Yes -  Tales From Topographic Oceans
12. Genesis - Selling England By the Pound
13. Genesis  - Foxtrot (if only for Can Utility and about 1/3 of supper's ready)

I really dont like much symphonic prog (particulalrly neo. . . **shivers) but these ablums rank among my top all time (tho not the ones from genesis... Embarrassed)  so i  do hope you will count them.

EDITED!!! - moving SEbtP up in front of foxtrot.

1. VDGG - Still Life (Even though the band are eclectic, this is the symphonic side to them, the organ and classical melodies prove this, especially in the title track and La Rossa)

5. Spock's Beard - V
6. Flower Kings - Unfold The Future
7. Camel - Moonmadness

9. Genesis - Lamb Lies Down
10. Pendragon - The Jewel
11. Pendragon - The Masquerade Overture
12. ELP - ELP
13. Neal Morse - Soul Scriptura
14. Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
15. Tangerine Dream - Rubycon
(Despite being Electronic, these have very strong symphonic elements, i doubt anyone will disagree)
16. Flower Kings - Sum Of No Evil
17. Spock's Beard - The Kindness of Strangers
18. Rick Wakeman - Six Wives
19. The Moody Blues - Days of Future Past
(Come on, the whole thing is practically a symphony :P)

26. Spock's Beard - Beware of Darkness
27. Genesis - Trespass

Big overhaul, and likely to receive another one at some point

1. Welcome Back My Friends - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
2. Close To The Edge - Yes
3. In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson
4. Emerson, Lake & Palmer - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
5. Selling England By The Pound - Genesis
6. Les Porches - Maneige
(Over half of it fits in with just about all the criteria on symph prog. Admittedly, the 2nd and 3rd chapters of Les Aventures (along with Chromo) don't really fit in, but the title suite has more than enough classical elements to qualify it)
7. Trespass - Genesis
8. Tarkus - Emerson, Lake & Palmer
9. Tales From Topographic Oceans - Yes
10. To Watch The Storms - Steve Hackett
11. Nursery Cryme - Genesis
12. Ys - Il Balletto Di Bronzo

20. Per Un Amico - Premiata Forneria Marconi

Anyway, that's my ignorance out in the public eye Tongue

Yikes! Wasn't expecting another great fan from it!

Love that album!! But not Nurse ..

Don't you think Nurse is rather an incosistent album after Trespass, I really feel that even though having Musical Box. I really prefer having Genesis Live before that. (no offense) Just wanna know YOUR answer cause YOU are a Trespass fan so please others do not reply except you're a Trespass fan
