Kraftwerk is like the first Techno Band in my mind. I have the album Autobahn, wich is quite good, but really you have to like Electronic a hell lot!

I would suggest you Klaus Schulze, who wah with Tangerine Dream when they started, and I think his oeuvre is more solid than mostly anything from Tangerine, except maybe Phaedra, wich is a classic really.

TD
"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

I don't really see the similarities, other than that both are electronic groups, but that doesn't say anything.

Tangerine Dream is my favourite band , so I vote them of course, but I like Kraftwerk too, Autobahn is a masterpiece. I dislike their 80's music tho whereas TD were able to do several great albums in the 80's too.

High five,Logos!

Tangerine Dream is my favourite band too...what they did in the 1971-1985 period is absolutely amazing...Kraftwerk cannot possibly compare with Tangerine Dream...

If it was limited to first 2 (or three, and with the inclusion of Organisation) Kraftwerk albums, my choice would be Kraftwerk.

I understand those who find them similar, only when you get deeply involved you can figure out the differences. This is also written in the official TD site: (from frequently asked questions)

58. Are Tangerine Dream members fans of the German band »Kraftwerk«?
Kraftwerk is more or less representive of the opposite way to use electronic instruments. We've never heard a TD member whistling a Kraftwerk tune!

absolutely true. Kraftwerk seems to be the originator of synth pop, and their approach is more or less limited with repetitive minimalism (at least after '74). On the other hand, TD always sought after the new, even made 2 symphonic prog albums (Cyclone and Force Majeure)

hats off to ('70's era) Tangerine Dream!

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

I don't really mingle much on these forums, but recently I've been going through my Kraftwerk LP's and I have to say that, at least on the first S/T release (Red witch's Hat cover) they sound more like CAN to Tangerine Dream.  Later albums have more resemblance to Buggles albums than T.D.  Synth-Pop genius's, if you ask me.  AUTOBAHN is a great compromise between earlier Krautrock experimentations and then their revolutionary electronic 'Pop' music....

I love both groups but only up to a point. Kraftwerk are amazing up to Radio-Aktivität, Tangerine Dream are incredible up to Encore.

After Radio-Aktivität, the mechanical side of Kraftwerk overcame the human side (which had been struggling valiantly but fighting a losing battle). There are enjoyable moments in later albums but they are missing the warmth of the earlier ones.

Tangerine Dream's albums from Cyclone onwards vary between great (Logos, Poland), good (Force Majeure, Exit), OK (Thief), forgettable (Cyclone, White Eagle, Hyperborea) and rubbish (everything after Poland).

I liked Autobahn before I became a serious prog fan.  But when I became one, I didn't consider them really prog and promptly lost interest in them.  In a way Tangerine Dreams stuff helped push my interest away from them.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

As much as I appreciate Tangerine Dream, I have never been a very big fan. However, I love Kraftwerk.
