Well I play for 5 hours yesterday, about 2/3 of which was in the band practice session today.
I was playing some string skipping legato licks in the Soothsayer arrangement, when I get to where I start my solo (our bassist actually gets 64 bars to play a solo in that song as well ).
I've been trying out major/minor add 7 add 9 arpeggios too lately, and sometimes I play them surprisingly clean.
I think for a little while, I have to spend more and more time on sweep picking, still pretty far behind my alternate picking and legato, but it's slowly catching up .

Since my computer chooses to work once every 3 days or so, I haven't been able to inform everyone on my progress.
Tommorow I will be going into the studio to record some new stuff, should be fun. I've pretty much been focusing on John Petrucci excercises from his instructional book/cd "Wild Stringdom", and my own songs.
Good news, I am getting a new computer sometime this/next week so I will actually report in everyday again.

What are the specifications for your new computer going to be?

200 000 homes were affected by a power failure in Melbourne today, one of those including mine. Since the power failure happened about 2 hours before I planned to start playing (the power came back 5 and a half hours after it cut out), I couldn't play electric. I got out the classical guitar for about 2 hours, and learnt to play the intro to Diary Of A Madman-Ozzy Osbourne. That song features some of the best guitar work Randy Rhoads ever did IMO. I nailed that in about 20mins, and after that, set to work on just improvised finger picking stuff, and two handed tapping on the low E and A strings, which kinda hurts for a little while, but you gradually get used to it.
Well It's 10:50pm here, I've been on the forums and msn since 8:30, might set to work on electric at 11:30, and play till about 2am, or until I get tired I guess.

In other news, I am playing a benefit show for Darfur (my school is hosting it), my set will be:
1. Porcupine Tree - Wedding Nails
2. An original of my own
3. Joe Satriani - Crowd Chant (hopefully there will be some participants)
I wish the set could be longer but there's a "time restriction"

Awesome I wish I could do a benefit show like that, but at the moment, I don't think there is anywhere around Melbourne that I know of offering something like that, unless perhaps I ask my school if I could do one as well, cos apart from music, I'm fairly into politics, international events and history too, so I've sorta come to realise how being a musician can be have a positive impact on people's lives. It's a really good feeling knowing your a musician that can make a difference, we really do need less selfish people in the world, kudos to you dude
I haven't heard Wedding Nails yet (the only PT album I have is Fear Of a Blank Planet), but I assume if's a cool song anyway. Crowd Chant, woa, I seriously thought no one but Satch would do that, but hey, hopefully the crowd has some Satch fans that have seen his Satriani Live! DVD already
Good luck with the show.

Well before I forget, yesterday I played from 11:30 till 2am, actually working more on rhythm guitar than normal, and of course going through the usual stuff.
I recently got Guitar Pro 5, so I've been making backing tracks to solo over, which is handy since my bass player friend Billy got a girlfriend and hasn't been home (his obviously been at his GFs house, mind you her house is a 7 minute walk from mine, and billy lives 15 minutes away, so she lives about halfway between us), so I haven't been able to jam with him since last the 28th of March. Damn it, why couldn't he get a GF that lived further away so they aren't always seeing each other (and yes, all 3 of us go to the same school, garghhhhh!).

Thanks very much . The show will be next Monday. I have been practicing a lot lately and writing some new material, trying to record, AND all the hockey that I'm involved in has prevented me from updating with everyone since April 4.
So how has everyone been doing the last couple of days?

Me, I started school again this week But I've been doing my best to get 3 hours in a night.
My string skipping is really really happening now, in alternate picking. The sweep picking just doesn't improve as fast as I want it to unforunately.
Other than that, I haven't been jamming with friends at all lately, more just creating backing tracks in guitar pro to solo and improvise over.

I have been working on my sweeping for the past week or so and it really has been picking up. No new computer yet, I currently still am recording and writing. Still lots of hockey, but at the same time still lots of guitar.

I got in 3 hours today (it's about 10 minutes to midnight here in Melbourne), mainly jamming over chord progressions really. I wasn't sure whether we are meant to post everyday, I was just kinda always waiting for you to reply first before I made my next post here.

My sweeping is coming along even more My sweeping just always sucked, but I can actually hear the individual notes in the sweep now.
Got in 3 hours today, mainly working around chrod progression where I can fit in diminished arpeggios.
EDIT: I managed another 4 hours today. I've been trying out some 3 note per string pentatonic patterns lately, mainly in A minor. So far it's only at slow tempos and I've been trying it in string skipping as well.

My school benefit concert was a success, Wedding Nails went very well (I constructed my own solo considering SW's isn't the best IMO) and Crowd Chant went pretty good, only about half of the audience was participating because there was some old hags but I got some really good feedback from some of my classmates.
I did however get a lot more feedback when I played "Cliffs of Dover" for the Variety Show in January which is before I even joined the forum.
I'm going to do some more recording over the weekend probably, I'm looking forward to that.

Fantastic job with the sucessful performance
Wow, you can play Cliffs Of Dover. That song is hellishly difficult, but then again I've never really tried to play it. It would be awesome if you got around to making a youtube video of yourself playing one day.

Once I get a camera I'll be glad too, also it's not as difficult as it sounds really. Just by the way you talk about music and your guitar playing I can tell you're a better guitarist/musician than me, I don't know a lick of theory. You would deffinitley be able to pull of cliffs.

As for what theory I know, I'm completely self taught, and have never done any formal theory lessons anywhere, what I know has come from reading books really and figuring out some aspects myself. I can only really use Tab, reading proper notation takes way too long for me. I'm very very well versed in theory with modes, and chord progressions, and I know some classical music concepts as well.
As for skill, I can imagine you're about equal to me, but then again, I've never actually tried to play Cliffs Of Dover from the start to end, but I might give that a go later this year.
I'm working on a Buckethead song right now, and I've just about nearly nailed the main guitar solo from Pull Me Under. I've got a performance for school next friday, but have run into some complications, due to our rhythm guitarist completely dropping out of school, so we have a whole week to teach our replacement dude the stuff, not sure how well that will go, but I'm hopeful at least
