RIO is a sub-category of Avant-prog, not vice-versa.  There is a current group of bands being regarded as a modern RIO movement.  This includes bands like NeBeLNeST, Guapo, Far Corner, and Miriodor.  Like the original RIO movement, this recent set of bands has little in common except for the facts that each has a unique sound and that none fit well into traditional genres.

Hmm, ok so basically these bands are underground, just like Henry Cow, Magma and the others... Thank you so much for you're suitable explanation, its so strange...I never heard of those bands before... I'm going to search them up.

P.S. Once again, thank you.

Wikipedia's entry on Rock in Opposition has a brief mention of the 2007 RIO festival, which included modern bands Salle Gaveau (from Japan), Guapo (from England) and some others as well.

As Jake has already said, bands such as NeBeLNeST and Far Corner (both French bands) are considered RIO, as are Quebécois band Miriodor (who have been around since the 1980s).

Also check out the following, especially if you like Chamber Prog like Univers Zero, Present and Shub-Niggurath:

Sotos (another excellent French band)
Zaar (released an excellent self-titled 2007 album, has members of Sotos in it - guitarist Yan Hazera sadly passed away last year though, so I doubt we'll see anymore from them, although I know his brother Michael Hazera was putting together some of his recordings for a project they were working on together)
Ahvak (an Israeli band who released a brilliant album.  Features the brilliant Dave Kerman of 5uu's on drums)
Cro-Magnon (a great Belgian band, their sound taking obvious influence from UZ and the other Belgian chamber bands of the '70s)
Ensemble Nimbus (a Swedish band featuring Samla Mammas Mannas Hasse Bruniusson on drums)

There are many bands that could be considered modern RIO and of course, don't forget the solo projects of former Henry Cow members, such as Fred Frith and Chris Cutler.  They also formed bands of their own, such as Massacre and The (ec) Nudes, who could be classed as '80s RIO.

I just want to re-mention how good this new Make a Rising album, Infinite Ellipse and Head with Open Fontanel, is.  An extraordinary and seamless mix between classical, world music folk, and progressive rock, it seems as though this band has created a new genre entirely.

Jesse from the band has contacted me and has offered to send me a promo of this album for reviewing so when it arrives I'll share my thoughts here. I'll also review the first one as well.
Mecca, you can add your review here in PA as well as I added the band recently.

I saw John Greaves in concert on thursday, great concert BTW (I wrote a review) and before the concert he told me that he is going to present "Kew Rhône " this summer with the one and only Lisa Herman as a guest star....the concert will take place near Lyon.... and will most certainly  become a small 2 day festival!!!! with a Canterbury All-Star band joining : Hopper, Miller, Malherbe, Meyer, Maguire, Denizet confirmed...
here is the website of the venue still under construction, but as soon as I have details I'll post them here.... so try to plan ahead for a nice cozy weekend in Frogland this summer...Wink
BTW tomorrow I will see Thinking Plague (I know some people have just more luck Tongue) at Le Triton and Aymeric Leroy will surely tell me more...

Okay, cool.  Will do.  Thanks for adding them!

Also, I've never heard of these bands mentioned on this page:

Ensemble Nimbus (a Swedish band featuring Samla Mammas Mannas Hasse Bruniusson on drums)

I'm going to check those out, they sound like they'd be pretty great.

Thirded! And I do so love Kew Rhone.

I was seriously planning on making the trip to the RIO festival last year in France but couldn't due to my wife's newborn.  Cry http://www.rocktime.org/rio/english.htm
Maybe I'll go in 2009.

I have their two last albums which are good quirky albums in a SMM/Miriodor sort of way.

I'm going to check those out, they sound like they'd be pretty great.

Ah, I do remember checking out ensemble Nimbus, I need to buy some of their material.  It is great.  I can definitely hear their influences.  And they have a new album out this year!  That's great to hear, I'll be checking that out as well.

Edit: and I did make a review for their debut but I couldn't see their Infinite Ellipse on here, when that does get added, I'll add the review from rateyourmusic.

Another thing, I wish it went faster adding ratings to rateyourmusic, I've got 200 ratings so far and I'm still in the B's...

Alas, I have reached the rock bottom of my wallet again and so can't buy anymore cd's in the coming time (relying on promo's for the time being) and so two cd's I want really bad and that I've read very good reviews about are from Rune Gramofon - http://www.runegrammofon.com/

Anyone here heard them? If so, what did you think of them (make me drool....)?

Box sounds quite interesting, and Food makes me curious as well.  I might look into those.

Assaf, Just out of interest, do you have any other Food releases? I sent an email to the guy (devout Rune G fan) from the store I mentioned above, he recommended their '04 release Last Supper as their best.

Just out of interest, RYM list of someone's personal favs. from Rune G. Looks like a good list for neophytes like myself.

Mecca, here's a reply I got from Jesse from Make A Rising about your reviews for the albums:

I just read the reviews for our first and second albums - thank you very much for those! To answer a semi-question in your review of Rip Through... the drums on that record sound kind of sh*tty and it's definitely not on purpose. We basically self recorded that album with a little help from our friend Bill Moriarty. The result is a combination of rushing the mic placement, poor mixing (in terms of drums anyway), and a certain naivite in our approach to recording. For the 2nd album we went in the total opposite direction and spent 3 months+ on drums sounds. Of course on both albums we used bare-bones equipment and trial&error to get sounds we wanted; borrowing mics from friends etc... Most of the 2nd album was recorded with sm57's in my brother's bedroom. Hope that illuminates some of the mystery behind our lo-fi nuggets. It's my dream to someday have Godley and Creme engineering our albums, but till then oh well.

Jesse

I'm somewhat stunned he read the reviews, haha.  And I'm glad he was able to clear up the reasons for the odd drum mixing.  And I'm even happier that they were able to fix those with the new album, I wonder if in the future, with a larger fanbase and more money at their disposal, they might re-record the first album so we can hear how it would sound with the better production.  One thing I'm a gigantic fan of, for the new Make a Rising album, is the abundance of strange worldly percussion sounds, they reminded me a lot of Moe!...

Jesse know PA apparently and I told him I added MAR to PA and the band was happy to know that and so they looked to see if I posted my review and at first they thought your review was mine, so I told them it was yours and that we're both fans of MAR.

I am right now writing my review for their album but I will take more time and give it a few more days to see what comes up more in my mind.

This is one of the hardest reviews I've got to write since it is so hard to pinpoint their sound, as I find them to be quite unique and original.

I usually don't do this as it's not my style but I figure that if Kayo Dot receives such hype why not MAR which are as worthy of such high regard.

This is a FABULOUS album, one of the most creative I've heard in recent years, a fantastic release, a must for fans of everyhing creative and progressive (not necessarily avant-rock).

GET IT!!!
