Nektar is pretty sweet (haha). I have two of their albums and enjoy them quite a bit.
Vanilla Fudge was great. They were heavy, hot-to-trot bass/drum powering before that Bonham fellow came about. I learned Bass and Drum set partially in thanks to the instructional materials presented by Mr. Appice, and Mr. Bogart.
The Strawbs are one of my favorite bands. A Brave New World is an awesome album and should be purchased by all, especially in LP format. The best!
I think I have an Orange Peel album. But I haven't listened to it yet.
Tangerine Dream is alright in my book. I like some of the 70s albums. Cool stuff.
The poll doesn't have any mention of Japanese greats like Food Brain, and Flied Egg. Both were great.

Here is a link to the original thread that was started by King Volta to suggest Tartar Lamb for the Archives. They are a relatively new addition as well. They are a side project of Toby Driver of Kayo Dot/Maudlin of the Well fame, so they might appeal to fans of these bands, or fans of Toby Driver. I like quite a few bands on this list like Rational Diet, Olive Mess both are brilliant bands (wrote reviews for both) but I'll mention two others in particular:
Thieves' Kitchen have a new album out so it's good to give them a push up
Yolk released a great album in 2006 (?) and I recommend it to all avant/experimental-rockers!

Ran across this thread which was quite neglected in its time discussing the band Ultimate Spinach. The band name sounds suspiciously like something that might get Popeye brought in for a congressional hearing. Anyhow, in case any one is interested.

I think Olive Mess don't really count; the name seems to refer to the colour, not the fruit. The same for Tangerine Dream.

I think in Olive Mess's case, their name is a continuation of the Henry Cow tradition where you shorten some relevant person's name down until it resembles dictionary words. more exactly, Oliver Messiaen. =)

Have you never dreamt of tangerines or made a mess out of olives? Tangerine dreams can be quite fruitful and olives can stain and thus make quite a mess.  It isn't so much about the poll however, it is more about discussing lesser known bands and one interpretation of their name would allow them to fit in to this thread's theme. If and when I decide to do the colors poll they will probably both be included there too. I just won't include all the black and blue bands included in the Bruising poll thread.

Stoney gives the Tangerine Dream quite the endorsement in this new thread that he created yesterday. There seems to be some big fans of Tangerine Dream. I have 3 albums from them, which means I have barely made a dent in their discography. The albums that I have from them are Architechture in Motion, The Dream Mixes, and Rockoon. I haven't listened to any of them in quite a while and only vaguely remember what they sound like. Are these albums representative of the Tangerine Dream sound or more of a 90's New Age sound versus a proggier earlier sound?

What about some Italian food? Capsicum Red (it has to do with red chili), Cherry Five, Latte e Miele (milk and honey), Panna Fredda (cold cream)
... and if you get thirsty, there are the Acqua Fragile (fragile water) and Consorzio Acqua Potabile (Drinkable Water Company)

Thank you, paolo.beenes. Cherry Five did make the food related prog bands part 1 poll. Unfortunately, my Italian is limited to Ciao and a few other words, so I was not aware of the translations of the other bands that you listed. I suspected that I would miss some in non-English languages. Please feel free to discuss those other bands here in this thread as well, since they definitely meet the specifications that I was looking for.

'The Pineapple Thief' is good food. I would grossly classify them as a combination of Pink Floyd / Blackfield / Fruit Salad.
Always fun at the table and enjoyable to listed to as well.

I recently downloaded this album from eMusic:
The blurb says that it was recorded in 1970 at an undisclosed time and location but that it was shortly after Rick Wakeman joined The Strawbs. I'm listening to it right now for the first time. You can definitely hear some Wakeman piano flourishes.

^ I can't help but think of the candy dispensers, and wonder if this band specializes in "Ear Candy".
I picked up another Strawbs album the other day. This one is listed as Strawbs Acoustic, and from what I have read is they played a special concert in front of 100 or 200 people at a Hi-Fi store in Canada called Natural Sound in August of 2004. This isn't the whole band, it is just the 3 guys playing Strawbs songs acoustically. It is a good quality recording.

Tangerine Dream are one of my favorite bands. I have 48 albums at last count. A few of my favorites are, Encore, Force Majeure, Ricochet, Underwater Sunlight, Live Miles, 220V Live, Turn Of The Tides and Tournado.

I downloaded Twisted from Tea for Two from eMusic.
The first track, Spanish Night, makes great use of Spanish guitar and Spanish rhythms. The second track, Soundscapes, is an excellent instrumental. The third track, Out in the Sun makes wonderful use of the flute-very Ian Anderson-ish. The 4th track, Last Drink, is a piano-oriented instrumental which channels a little of Piano Man era Billy Joel. The 5th track, Autumn, is all about the acoustic guitar strummed and picked throughout; the vocalist reminds me of someone here, but I can't quite place who. The 6th track, Hold On, is a decent melodic song with focus on the guitar. The 7th track, My Own Way, brings back the piano and guitar and is also a good melodic song. The 8th track, Scar Folk, is an excellent instrumental that brings back the flute and then rocks on. I think this is a song that might fit nicely on a Focus album. On the 9th track, Why?, they pull out the acoustic guitar again and pick and strum their way through a beautiful, but short, instrumental. The last track, Come What May, is the longest song on the album at just over 7 minutes, and it is also one of the best on this album. Again, with the wonderful use of the acoustic guitar, but in addition there is prominent use of the violin (at least I thought it was violin, but it might have been a cello) throughout the song, as well as some female backup vocals.
At the very least, creating this poll made me check out this band that I probably would not have otherwise known, and I was quite pleased with this album. They are listed in crossover prog, which means that they would most likely appeal to those like me with an ear for progressive pop.

I like Nektar the most out of all those. I wish that I could have seen them live in their prime.

Since Oysterhead are included in Prog-Related, I decided not to include them in this poll. However, I did include them in one of the Prog Gone Wild Life polls if you would like to provide some information about them.

Based on some recommendations here and in other threads I have recently "discovered" Nektar. They are really good. It is quite a shame that they have been around so long and I have missed so many years of enjoying them. I have downloaded 5 of their albums from eMusic and just learned from the below thread that they released a new album in 2008. So in case you missed it, here is a thread from Easy Livin regarding their newest album.
