I'm surprised at the lack of discussion on Shawn Lane. It always saddens me that someone of such supreme talent was so unrecognised outside of jazz fusion guitar circles, and even then, he wasn't exactly as well known as Holdsworth. I'm not much of a fusion head, more of a shred head, but he probably has even more of a following among the shred movement than jazz fusion (Just my guess, from what I have observed). I only discovered Lane last year, after reading about Rusty Cooley naming him as a big influence. Lane's style might not be for everyone, but for those that his playing 'spoke to', it was truly a gift to the music world and the lives his music touched and inspired.

I agree. Shawn Lane is one of the precious few who could convey emotion while playing fast (the only other I can think of is Steve Morse). People like Vai and Satch can bring the emotion, but they gotta slow down first. It's a crying shame they took down most of Shawn's vids on YouTube (as well as Vai's. All I can find now is the duel from Crossroads).

Shawn Lane did a large body of work with that bass great, Jonas Hellborg, so perhaps if you check out Hellborg's name on You Tube you might be lucky and see Lane too. Otherwise, Lane is on Hellborg's Indo-jazz fusion CD Icon and the accompanying DVD Paris. I also believe that the Abstractlogix site has a number of videos with Lane and Hellborg. Lane started with the country rock band Black Oak Arkansas, but I first came across him on (ex. Santana) Michael Shrieves' Two Doors CD, and then through a good half dozen album collaborations with Jonas Hellborg and Jeff Sipe. Lane was particularly interested in the music of the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,  considered to be one of the greatest 'Qawwals' vocalist - some which ca be heard in Lane's guitar playing - and the occasional wordless vocals (e.g. on Two Doors).

An academic friend was based in LA ten  years ago, and seemed to spend more time checking out the dumper bins in some of the bigger record stores in Hollywood. However, he did come out with some excellent shred albums each for a dollar(!), and sent me a number of duplicates he found, e.g. albums by Marty Friedman (on what I felt a strange chocie for a metal shredder the Kitaro produced Scenes album) , Ron ThalMichael Lee Firkins (more the country rock end of shredding?), Buckethead (also appeared with Hellberg/Shrieve on one of the most impressive acoustic jazz fusion albums of the 90's Octave of the Holy Innocents), Chris Poland (now with his band Ohm), Marc Bonilla (now with California Transit Authority), Gary Hoey (great version of Wipe Out on his Bug Alley) and Greg Howe (perhaps the one who has moved deepest in jazz rock fusion in the last 10 to 15 years).

I really liked Ron Thal's Hermit (for instance, I Can't Play The Blues works so well on a number of different levels, whilst the range of compositions allow for a range of styles to be laid down) - however, in the UK Ron Thal albums are either unavailable or outrageously overpriced on CD format (I managed to buy Bumblefoot last year after several years of waiting).

Also check out that other Swedish shredder, Mattias IA Eklundh's solos - would you believe he too can  be found playing with Jonas Hellberg, this time on Hellberg's latest album Art Metal -

Both albums have 20+ tracks, so instead of long solos you get to listen to him provide 2 to 4 minute snapshots of tunes, and therefore hear a much broader cross-section of musical styles in tight arrangements, for which his shredding has been adapted.

I was actually really saddened when they took down the best quality videos of Get You Back and Grey Flying Pianos, because they were some of my favourite Shawn Lane songsCry

I've never liked that typical American shred sound. I am more into the Britsh style of soloing as bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard or Saxon. Those bands play fast and technical But they also know how to rock and put it in a framework of a song. Lot of shred guitarists lack energy.

Haven't anybody mentioned Michael Angelo Batio? or A.J. Minette from The Human Abstract?

In my opinion Batio isn't worth mentioning, he is a tad obnoxious with his "quad guitar". I do admit he's talented but he doesn't have to be THAT flashy.

Broderick is awesomeThumbs%20Up It's a shame he didn't stay on with Nevermore.
Megadeth is probably the easiest gig his had so far, not that it's necessarily a bad thing, but unless he gets a solo spot with Megadeth, the full extent of his talent and technique won't get a chance to shineThumbs%20Down

Well, I see Megadeth as a launching pad for Chris into the mainstream, mainstream being very relative. For example, most people in the 80's outside of the guitar world might have known Steve Vai from Whitesnake or David Lee Roth. If the following Megadeth tours/albums possibly go well, the next thing Chris does might be a solo album, which I'm sure would set new bars for modern guitar playing.

Actually, that's a pretty good point, something I wasn't thinking of.
Just wondering, does anyone know how long Broderick's minimum term with Megadeth will be?
I haven't been able to find anything about a contract, or much detail as to how long he has to stay with the band.
I personally love Megadeth, but they peaked with RIP in 1990 IMO. I'm also hoping Broderick will perhaps get his fame that he long been deprived of for such a great talent, and embarks on a solo project or perhaps a really cool Prog-Metal band where he could show his full capabilities.

I'd have to agree with you and indeed I don't like this sort of "extreme" show off in a guitarist but if you look at the subject most of these guitarist that have this sort of talent always do something to be flashy enough. But then again leaving his quad guitar out of the subject he is pretty good. I just like his solos. They are pretty intense.

I agree 100% with you that he is a great guitarist, I just don't like the flashiness. You can be flashy to a certain extent, but after a while it gets ridiculous. Just my opinion though, some people think it adds to the show or character of the person. For instance : Alice Cooper, he is really flashy and a bit out there but it makes him who he is, and I love who he is btw Wink (not to much for my taste) .
