These are really great links.Looking at these canterbury and music related trees makes you start to realise just how vast the canterbury scene really is.I can happily award five of these (Star )all round.Top marks everybody.

Wolf's Night music album is another good one.Theres something about the violin/viola that I really dig,its the same with some of the caravan albums.Just cannot get enough of it sometimes.Embarrassed

I like this purist approach to Canterbury, i.e. no bands who vaguely sound Canterbury but not English included whilst bands who derive directly from the core Canterbury bands, included - even though they don't fit PA's definition. However, it could do with a vigorous update, e.g. Softworks, Soft Machine Legacy.
 
And it does fall flat wrt Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper, etc. Shouldn't Spiro Gira be included??  A family tree to build on.

Been looking for spirogyra after you mentioned them,not found them as yet.perhaps i'll look on the other tree mentioned.Still interesting band which included Dave Stewart ,and Barbera Gaskin who was a member of the Northette's on the Hatfield and the North albums.Smile

Have been meaning to check out Spirogyra's work,due to some articles mentioning their albums in some of the old music mags,but never really got around to it.I know they were more of a phych/folk band which sounds interesting,as folk formed an important part of the underground music scene in the late 60's early 70's.Now I have a real stupid question, which would be the best album to sample their work?.Embarrassed

I mentioned Spiragyra (sp!!) since I was reminded of them in another thread on the subject of that band, in the last month - a member of the band complaining that they had been put in 'folk' rather than 'Canterbury' at PA!!

I can understand them being put into the folk genre.Have a small group of folk albums,and I admit to enjoying them.So a Canterbury based folk band with members,which ended up in some important canterbury style prog bands,will go down a treat.I did see a thread about them on this site,probably the one you mentioned.Hmmmm.......not sure about the 80's stuff either.ConfusedGulp.

Well I have been going back over some of my old notes,which are years old and I owe Dave Stewart a big appology for linking him with Spirogyra.He was never a part of it,however he did work later with Barbera Gaskin.How I ended up putting him there I will never know.Just shows the diffaculty in keeping track with everything.ConfusedReally must update those notes.

If you're looking to get in to Spirogyra, definitely get their 3rd album, Bells Boots and Shambles. Any easy 5-star for me and an absolute masterpiece, and 'In The Western World' is one of the most perfect songs ever.

Thank's,put Bells Boots and Shambles at top of wants list.Should be an interesting listen.Thumbs%20Up

Looks like all three of the Northettes were with the Ottawa Music Company along with Dave Stewart,and many other canterbury musicians.Surprised there were no official recordings of this venture.Reading somewhere that there may of been as little as seven gigs during the time,so the chances of any tapes,or private recordings surfacing are pretty slim.

Found four volumes of early material called Canterburied Sounds.They are on PA,but very little in the ways of reviews about them.Have a feeling the recordings will be of poor quality,but will give a good idea what was going on before Caravan and Softmachine.One track in particular sounds very intriging called Carazobe,apparantly done by  Caravan and Zobe.Smile

Was away on a business trip for the past couple days and listened to nothing but National Health and Khan in the car.  Dave Stewart has to be one of the greatest prog musicians ever - I think his body of work ranks with anyone I've heard, and I haven't even listened to the Egg CD which arrived yesterday.

Also, I LOVE Amanda Parsons.

Amanda Parsons is great, and really doesn't get enough credit. Singing Tenemos Roads is credit enough; I couldn't hit those notes with a loaded gun pointed to my head.
 
Gaskin's vocals are fantastic on BB&S, but she doesn't sound at all like her future work in the Northettes. She really takes the stage flawlessly on that one. Get it as soon as you can, it's one of my favorite albums ever. Take 'In The Western World', as I said. Without even looking at the title or lyrics, I knew what the song was about. Such powerful imagery.

The common recommendation of mine: check out Jakko M Jakszyk's The Bruised Romantic Glee Club for some wonderful Dave Stewart playing and the second CD largely of excellent Canterbury covers. It's about time Jakko was included in these archives, especially now he has become part of Tangent - and very lucky they are to get him too - and one of the few guys to get formal guitar teaching from maestro Allan Holdsworth!!!

Sounds good - weren't they in a band together briefly in the 80s, Rapid Eye Movement?

Yep. Jakko came on my show 14 months ago and we were talking Rapid Eye Movement - Jakko has a long term project to see if he can get some live recordings made by the band, mastered and onto CD. He give me 3 tracks in rough form  and I hope we get to hear  a full album in the near future
