Oh! I've heard two Officer tracks on some various artists compilations and I had always wondered if there was more out there, and I recently found a comprehensive list of albums on which Zeena Parkins appears, so Mick Hobb's name has been on my mind. It's time I listened to an album. =)

I've seen this mentioned, but have yet to hear anything by them.  I believe ReR Megacorps has copies of Ossification, but I'm not sure about Yes Yes No No Yes No Yes.

Infact, they may not, but I'm sure I've seen it recently somewhere... what's your thoughts on it, Assaf?

A recommendation:

Officer - Ossification

I've had this album for a year or so but never though of mentioning it here but I should have.

Here's what it says in Mended Records blogspot - http://mendedrecords.blogspot.com/2006/12/officer-ossification.html

Mick Hobbs and a loose list of guests including Felix Fiedorowicz, Andy Bole, Cath Jauniaux, Tom Cora, Zeena Parkins, Georgie Born and the rest of The Work in 14 toe-tappers with arrangements ranging from complex chamber-rock to Incredible String Band influenced folk. And all things between. A couple of cuts with string-quartet backing. As idiosyncratic as you would expect from a gathering of such characters. You know the phrase: Pop music as it should be - meaningful, intelligent and entertaining. May i ask why this is not reissued yet?

OFFICER! - Ossification, 1984 (AYAA)
Mick Hobbs (kb/d/p/g/b/pc/comp) - Felix Fiedorowicz (voc/bsn/rec/pc/p/comp)
with: Bill Gilonis (kb/b/cl/p/tones) - Tim Hodgkinson (as/bs/g/cl) - Tom Cora (cel) - Zeena Parkins (harp) - Catherine Jauniaux (voc) - Rick Wilson (d) - Andy Bole (g) - Georgie Born (cel) - Judy Carter (voc) - Jussi Karel (vla) - Patrick Gundry (vln/fhn) - Terry Robson - Anne Stokes - Christina Wild - Graham - Kevin - Kevin - Mary
Rec: 1983-84 - Loc: Cold Storage, Brixton - Pr: unk
Tracks: Dynamite - Anagrams - Air - Telepathy - Spitter's Hooked (On Love) - Dogface - Some - Boxers v Wrestlers - Tunnels - Apply - Office Occasion - Origin - Hello - Top, Top, Top

There's another release:

OFFICER! - Yes Yes No No Yes No Yes, 1988 (AYAA)
Mick Hobbs (kb/d/p/g/b/pc/comp) - Bill Gilonis (kb/b/cl/p/tones) - Antoine Gindt (unk) - Claudia Schmid (unk) - Daniel Koskowitz (unk) - Felix Fiedorowicz (voc/bsn/rec/pc/p/comp) - Keisuke Matsui (unk)
Rec: 1986-88 - Loc: France & England - Pr: unk
Tracks: Coma - R Tune - Simone - Old St - Remove your Hat - (I've got a) Nice Girlfriend - (I Only Want to Make You) Smile - Truck - Hid it - Gawping - Bright Star

True.

Oh and welcome to P.A., Salvo, it's always good to see a new RIO and Avant-prog fan here.

Sotos make NeBeLNeST sound like amateurs and they're even from the same country.  'tis a shame Yan Hazera passed on, his guitar playing was fantastic.

Except it's slightly more obnoxious. But at least it doesn't mess with search engines at all!

Actually, make that ALL of NeBeLNeST.  Not just the drummer.  My bad.

Silly question here - What's with the band name, album titles and song names? Is there anything behind them or just whatever comes to their mind?

Also, given what I heard in their two last albums, how much of their songs are created in improvisation, if at all? Cause at times it sounds like it.

Oh, and ask them what are current bands/musicians they appreciate/like/think highly of etc.

that's about it... I think...

I read somewhere they started as simple Nebelnest but have somehow changed their name to the unfathomable NeBeLNeST.  I guess they wanted to do a Godspeed You Black Emperor! there.

Sotos' debut is sublime, I forgot how good it was!  This is what chamber prog should sound like... it even has some math moments.

Where did that violin go on their second release?

It's just I think NeBeLNeST need to put more soul into their compositions as they occasionally seem uninspired and bland on occasion.  The same can be said for Far Corner.

Don't question him about the above though. Wink
I have to agree with you on NeBeLNeST, and I used to agree with you on Far Corner, but recently I have found Far Corner much more enjoyable. I even got over the fretless bass. Endangered is a great album, if one that occasionally borders on being too repetitive. But I guess that's the nature of chamber prog, variations on a theme is almost the whole point.

I was thinking of questions along those lines.  Nova Express is the name of a William Burroughs novel (same dude who wrote The Soft Machine), but I'm not sure about the other names.

Personally, I just can't get NeBeLNeST.  Different strokes I guess.

I've managed to find a copy, Shakes, but it's a Japanese version.

Ardeur is also now out of print, but again, I've found a copy to purchase.

To my knowledge, 4 Visions is out of print, and your only bet at finding it is on eBay. But that also makes it legal to download...

I received yesterday from Bob Drake, the 6 solo albums he release.
Brilliant song-writing, splendid compositions and playing. This is superb, creative and refreshing music.
