I had "Vital Signs" in my head, so I listened to Moving Pictures in the car yesterday.  One of those albums that fits like an old glove - dependable and never disappoints.

You can only go up from 2112. There's a lot of love for this record, but it's greatly over-rated, IMO.

If you like 2112, you'll love Caress Of Steel and A Farewell To Kings. And if you like those, they'll lead you to Hemispheres and the warp-speed jump to Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Signals, Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows.

If you're still with them, Presto and Counterparts are great. The last great album is Vapor Trails, a difficult but very rewarding listen.

The records I didn't mention (Rush, Fly By Night, Hold Your Fire, Roll The Bones, Test For Echo, Snakes & Arrows) have their moments, but are not classics for me. A lot of brilliant individual tracks, though. Recommended only if you become a die-hard fan!

And.

If you love 2112, you're probably better off stopping right there.

I disagree. I started with 2112 years back and loved it. It only got better and better the more I listened. Until Presto and RTB. Then Counterparts restored my faith in their ability to keep rocking. But, bottomline, it's a matter of taste.

Same here - 2112 was my intro, it blew me away and remains a favorite to this day.  It led to me acquiring their entire collection.

My first Rush album (heard mostly on the radio) was Permanent Waves.  I remember seeing the band mentioned in connection with US and UK charts, and was intrigued by the song titles. Having been into prog for some years, I realised there was something there that had the potential to capture my attention... When I heard some of their earlier work, namely the wonderful Xanadu, I was well and truly hooked.

My first Rush album was Fly By Night, but it was Farewell to Kings (Cygnus X-1 in particular) and Hemisphers that really did me in. 2112 is still a favorite though. But hey, it's all just a matter of taste

My first rush was Moving Pictures.... continuedwith Signals.. and fell off the bandwagon there after that.  I  went back to the older albums.  Where I fell in love with Caress of Steel.  As I've posted many times... really enjoy the campy 70's stuff...  the lyrics are silly at best.. and downright stupid at worst but man alive was the music some great stuff.

And "The Camera Eye" is pure magic. That entire album has withstood the test of time.

I'm listening to Grace Under Pressure. This disc has taken a monster leap for me. I think when I bought the LP back when I was a kid that it was too much of a departure from anything Rush had ever done and I just never cared for it as a whole (except for "Between The Wheels"). I went several years of not evening hearing it until I picked up the remastered about 5 years ago and now it's one of my favorites. I've described it as a very cold and steely disc. Couldn't live without Grace Under Pressure.

My first Rush album was "Caress of Steel"; I was 16 when I bought it and I've loved it more than any other Rush album ever after. I admit that there are better albums in Rush's production, but with "Caress..." it was love at first sight. "The Valley" and "The Fountain" sound so mature and accomplished; they almost touch perfection.

Agreed! So great. The tension is so intense on P/G. A masterpiece that grows with every listen.

Based on my impressions as a Rush fan for nearly five years now, GUP is a record that has "gotten its due" in recent years. I remember being on the Rush message board called Counterparts in 2003, reading about the various albums before I took the dive and bought some myself, and GUP always seemed to be near the bottom on people's lists, with only few diehards really loving it. Based on that, my expectations for the record were pretty low at best at the time I bought it, but what do you know, I loved it from get-go! I've always found it a very passionate sounding record, with Geddy at his most intense vocally speaking, and Alex's soaring, engaging guitar work at the centre of things. The band had a hard time making GUP and I suppose the impact of the various srtuggles can be heard in the music, but not in a negative way at all IMO. It's heartfelt and honest. A permanent top three record on my Rush list.

I so wish I could see a show on the upcoming NAn tour! I *loved* the setlist for the S&A tour last year when they visited Helsinki for the first time ever. I managed to keep pretty much all of it as a surprise for myself so the musical high of hearing such old gems like Circumstances and Entre Nous being performed was even greater that way!

I was made to love magic

"Entre Nous" sounded great. Especially when Lifeson would switch over to the acoustic for the chorus.

Actually, one my favorite parts was when they came out for the second set and launched into "Far Cry". All of the Snakes And Arrows songs sounded awesome live.

Best album opener?

I used to think "The Spirit Of Radio" from Permanent Waves, "Subdivisions" starting off Signals or "The Big Money" kicking off Power Windows was great; however, "Far Cry" could get my vote these days.
