1."All the world's indeed a stage and we are merely players" (Rush, LIMELIGHT; that whole song is a huge lyrical hook, indeed)
2. "There's Winston Churchhill dressed in drag; he used to be British flag, plastic bag, what a drag!" (Genesis; SUPPER'S READY; Gabriel always did have a way with words.)
3. "Hear the calling of a miracle; in the presence of the world; now we hold the right to re-arrange how the stories can be heard..." (Yes, THE CALLING; Great tune with excellent lyrics, imo.)
4. "Life is no more assuring than love (It's time to take the time)...there are no answers from voices above (it's time to take the time...)" (Dream Theater, TAKE THE TIME; interesting and very thoughtful lyric on their BEST record.)

High as a wave
But I'll rise on up off the ground.
You are the light and the way
They'll only read about
I only pray heaven knows
When to lift you out
10000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...
You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I have come home now!"
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father,
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
"It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings!"...
Tool - 10,00 DAYS: Wings Part 2
'as a disembodied spirit I a dead, and yet unborn, I have passed on to olympus as was told in tales of old, to the city of immortals marble white and purest gold,' - rush, cygnus x 1 book 2
'His claim was phrased quite simply, yet he never voiced it loud, I am he the chosen One,' - Genesis , One for the vine
'You're older, shorter of breath and one day closer to death,' - Floyd, Time
'An angel on a harley pulls across to meet a fellow rolling stone, puts his bike upon his stands leans back and extends a scarred and greasy hand,' - Roger Waters - 501 TPACOH
'The Weaver in the web that he made,' -ELP, Tarkus

when everything you are is dying underground.'- Genesis - Anyway

Ivan got there before me with these two gems:
Firstly, the closing section of 'Supper's Ready'
There's an angel standing in the sun,
and he's crying with a loud voice,
"This is the supper of the mighty One",
The Lord of Lords,
King of Kings,
Has returned to lead His children home,
To take them to the new Jerusalem.
And this one from Tull's 'Thick As A Brick'
The Poet and the painter
casting shadows on the water
as the sun plays on the infantry returning from the sea
One which always sounds a chord with me is from Marillion's 'Script...'
In the silence of my shame
the mute that sang the siren's song
has gone solo in the game
but the game is over
Yet another nod to Peter Hammill (well, VDGG) I daresay it won't be the last in this thread:
No time now for contrition:
the time for that's long past.
The walls are thin as tissue
and if I talk I'll crack the glass.
So I only think on how it might have been,
locked in silent monologue, in silent scream
And finally for now, back to Roger Waters:
I was just a child then,
Now I'm only a man

Mr Antonio "Toni" Pagliuca (Le Orme):
1. From "Sguardo verso il cielo" (Looking at the Sky)
(The guilt of being alive and not able to change / like an abandoned dry branch / which tries in vain to bloom)
2. From "Figure di cartone" (Cardboard Silouhettes - about a demented woman in an asylum)
(You hold your pillow tight to your breast / and the silouhette of a woman with her child / appears on the white wall)
3. From "La Fabbricante D'angeli" (The Angel Maker - about illegal abortion)
(On the already flourished womb of an innocent girl / the moon hurts itself by passing the broken glasses)
4. From "Regina al Troubadour" (Queen at the Troubadour - about a runaway girl)
(Queen at the Troubadour, queen of the snow / everybody's around you, because you can't say "no" / You give out to everybody / the closest at hand gift / so easy, so easy)
5. From "Un Angelo" (An Angel - difficult to say what this could be about!)
(I've known an Angel / he's always been close to me / I don't know where he's from / Maybe he came down from a faraway world / Now that you're here I find again the strength to hold on / to go on
Gardens of carillons / of gentle sounds / smelling like honey / like wet ground
I announce my joy / I've got a sunbeam keeping me warm)
6. From "Calipso" (a comparison between Ulysses and a migrant)
(Since I recognise your song / and the drawing on your loom / I dedicate to you, sweet Calipso / this thought of mine
I'm not an austere god / but only a man who's following the way / lit by your huge statue
Give freedom to your beloved hero / you welcome and nourished / Now he's very sad, you know / he wants back his own land / Even if the night was so warm under the star spangled Flag)

Pink Floyd - Dogs: and its to late, to lose the weight, you used to need to throw around, so have a good drown as you go down alone, dragged down by the stone
Soft Machine - Moon in June: The sun shines here all summer, Its nice cause you can get quite brown, Ah, but I miss the rain, And I wish that I were home again

To quote my darling, this deserves some clappies ... Probably my favourite Beatles song, together with another one...
"All the lonely people, where do they all come from?
All the lonely people, where do they all belong?"
Edit: I saw a post by Jim quoting Marillion (usually not my favourite group), so I thought of this phrase that, like the two above, always brings tears to my eyes:
Peace on earth and mercy mild
Mother Brown has lost her child
Just another forgotten son.

"You have planted all your everlasting hatred in my heart" - Robert Wyatt Out of the Blue
This one line doesn't do the song justice, so here's all the lyrics:
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh
No need to wipe your feet
The welcome mat's not there
I’ll just take care before you dare
To step inside my door
Something unbelievable has happened to the floor
Something unbelievable has happened to the floor
Something unbelievable has happened to the floor
Something unbelievable
The room wont give you shelter
They’re open to the air
The upper storeys out of reach
The stairs no longer there
Beyond all understanding
You’ve blown my house apart
You set me free
You set me free
You set me free
You set me free
You set me free to let you know
You set me free to let you know
You planted everlasting hatred in my heart
You planted everlasting hatred in my heart
My rooms’ won't give you shelter
They’re open to the air
The upper storeys out of reach
The stairs no longer there
You planted all your everlasting hatred in my heart x4
You have planted all your everlasting hatred in my heart x5
"I can't forsake you or forsqueak you, Alife my larder, Alife my larder" - Robert Wyatt Alife

Too many people going underground,
Too many reaching for a piece of cake.
Too many people pulled and pushed around,
Too many waiting for that lucky break here's one from the most underrated of the great lyricists... Donald Fagen. Kids if you want some fun See what you never have seen Take off your cheaters and sit right down Start the projection machine

I wasn't there that morning
When my Father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
I think I caught his spirit
Later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo
In my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years

"i sing the song of sinking ships
in a soft and sleeping sea.
a song of slow rises and falls,
a song where refrains are only restraints-
some say a tired ocean pulls everything apart, and others say it's finally coming together.
in this song, the rhythms are feet on these decks;
children run, and lovers dance
hands that reach for each other and
into the air for notes make these cymbals ride,
and when they are pulled back to their sides
with nothing but ideas for tomorrow,
those hands make these cymbals crash.
and in this song, fingers on strings
are in search of a truth of some kind
and we live in the light of the notes
that we strike.
and in songs like this one,
they all blend together,
seeking out others like themselves...
and in this song
we find a way to follow all or none,
to accept these ends or defy them-
but those notes hammer on...
and when no one remembers where these
ships were built,
or knows whether they found home,
their legacy lives on in songs like this.
and when you sing this song,
those lovers will dance,
and those truths will be found..
those notes and cymbals,
and oceans and fingers will rise up again,
though now, they fade."
- The Pax Cecilia - 'The Tragedy
