Is this the first year that this has existed? Surely KC and Yes aren't later additions. Some good choices for honors, but some dubious ones as well. How is Tarja a new artist. Just because she went solo doesn't mean she's a fresh face. In fact, it's the exact opposite.

Looks as if these guys have a very narrow conception of PROG. No Canterbury Scene, no jazz-rock fusion, no RIO or avant-garde... Plus: Plant and Kraus are "acoustic prog"? Now I'm begging you! It's a lovely album, but prog it ain't!

Is Loreena McKennitt a progressive artist? Her music is OK, but I've heard much better - and then, I don't like her voice at all. |

nothing wrong with that I guess... give them some slack... they are just getting started. I think we all know.. from this site.. just how wildly people's notions of prog can vary. |

Prog is what's in my playlist.
EDIT: progressive country, hmm, Dixie Dregs could go there. Edited by Deathrabbit - February 15 2008 at 06:26 |

Loreena McKennit progressive rock?
Tarja Turunen's solo work is even less prog than her former band.

King Crimson, being one of the greatest bands of all time, deserve to be added in the first round, but they didn't need to add Fripp separately. That was a good chance to add Fred Frith they just missed.

I wonder if the Hall of Fame building will be designed by Roger Dean. You know, where you go in but never come out again...

Glad to see Kansas and Steve Walsh getting some respect. I sort of question the quality of the site, however.

It's poorly laid out, not informative enough, lacks context, has spelling mistakes, and should provide some justification for the choices.
"Members are from the radio industry, labels, press and we are also Progressive Rock musicians and Progressive Rock fans." "Membership dues are $25 per year. These dues also include your ticket to the Progressive Rock Hall of Fame awards concert held in 2008, voting privileges, a free subscription to the quarterly newsletter and more. Information coming soon on the awards concert series and our compilation CDs!" So anyone willing to shell out 25 bucks can vote (I wonder just how many are industry insiders and how reputable are they?). I really believe that there should be explicit criteria for making a choice but really these are just bases on popularity polls from the membership from what I can see. A little research shows that it was set up by an artist from an independent record label. If they want people to take progressive rock/ music seriously, they should provide frameworks of analysis that can be taken seriously. I understand the goals behind the project which has an aspect of wanting to have Prog be taken seriously by the industry and the mainstream, but... And just what Gabriel soundtrack are they talking about? And it makes it look like the nominees should be voted on based on their 2008 work (on the whole). Best Progressive Jazz Album "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" - Mahavishnu Project Odd that a compilation album would be chosen. Best Female Progressive Rock Vocalist Loreena McKinnett Their link takes me to Loreena McKennett's site, who is this McKinnett person, and since when did she start making progressive rock? Ground and Sky has her, but she's more closely aligned to New age and World Music than progressive rock. Apologies about the bold font, it follows from the quotes. I really don't know about these choices. |

For the most part, I think they took the safe route and obvious route.
I have no issues with any of the picks, because after all, what is "best" is all just a matter of opinion and personal preference. I mean, there are people who list the "best" of rap and hip hop, and that's just an oxymoron... |

I am a fan of all the bands they had honored. I own most of those bands records. 25 bucks for a ticket to the show? Where? Why does progressive rock need a hall of fame? ...sounds regressive to me.
