Topic: ZAPPA vs. HENDRIX Posted: February 12 2008 at 13:43 |
as i have recently joined this great website, i have now the opportunity to stop discussiing with my friends about zappa´s supreme mind control of the guitar comparing him to Hendrix´s physcall battle with the same guitar outfit...
If HENDRIX WOULD HAVE LIVED JUST 8 YEARS MORE... WHAT GUITAR RIFFS WOULD HAVE HE CREATED? would he take the train to jazz land and camp there till departure. or would he be a sort of eric clapton trying to make riffs of anything he sees walking...
My alltime and oldtime discussion...
FRANK ZAPPA is the better than HENDRIX... or is it otherwise..? tell whyy..!
PS: is ZAPPA the best guitarist of all times? Of course with other lads.... Marcelo Mayor for example..

probably the wrong place for this thread, it'd be better in the polls section.
I prefer Zappa to Hendrix personally.

I have to say I prefer Hendrix, for me he is more entertaining (I'm apreciating how his music reaches me, not the objective quality)

Hendrix without a doubt. Just listen to "Band of Gypsys".

Hendrix as a player is better than Zappa, by far, he was more innovative with the instrument. whereas Zappa was innovative with his overall music. and yea, Hendrix would have hooked up with Miles Davis during his fusion era, so who knows what great music would have been made.
so it goes like this for me...
Guitar playing - Hendrix Riffs - almost a tie, but Hendrix again Writing - definitely Zappa

I respect and appreciate Hendrix's vision and influence on music in general, not just the guitar, but in all honesty i find most of the stuff i've heard from him to be pretty boring. It just does nothing for me. Whereas i love listening to Zappa.
Zappa wins, hands down.

I'm not sure how you can compare these two.
Hendrix made three albums in his lifetime. Compare those to the first MOI albums. Hendrix wins hands down, as a guitarist, based on the first three from each. It took FZ a while to become a great guitarist. Who knows what Hendrix would have done.

^^^ that's true. Zappa didnt start becoming really good till around Uncle Meat/Hot Rats era. basically 1969. and he got better with time, eventually hitting his peak in the mid 70's and rode that peak till the early 80's. then he didnt play as much, which sucks. As great as Make A Jazz Noise Here is, i wish there was more Zappa guitar-work going on. o well...

When I saw the the thread title I thought I would not dare to reply...It is obvious they are so totally different, Psychedelia inflifted with virtuoso playing.Avant-gardish progressive rock with jazzy stuff, but oh well...I guess heads may bow to Hendrix now,although I do think Frank Zappa is a more complete and fearless artist, no shadow of doubt.
Hendrix=Best Virtuoso
Zappa=Most Creative Artist.
Let's put it like this hey...

Watching videos of Hendrix used to amaze me but after watching Zappa... Hendrix doesn't seem so impressive.

Hendrix was supposed to record with Mr. Miles Davis the day he died. So Hendrix was probably going to do some freaky electric Davis fusion masterpiece type music.
