ESTATE DI SAN MARTINO, L'* — Alder
Review by Finnforest (James)
Prog Reviewer

— First review of this album —

3%20stars L’Estate di San Martino (ESM) was born in a garage in an isolated, beautiful part of Italy called Umbria in 1975. The band formed to give musical support to a theatrical piece called “Alete.” There were numerous line-up changes over the next several years with a single released in 1978. Work on the conceptual material for “Alder” began in the spring of 1982. Being mostly a live working band it is appropriate that the Alder project ended up as a live album, recorded in December 1983 at the Zenith Theatre in Perugia over two consecutive nights. After this the band folded for 10 years before beginning another project called Febo. Alder was finally released on CD in 2006 and Febo in 2007.

The music of ESM during the Alder period is a softer prog rock which merges early mellower Genesis tendencies to the origins of the neo-prog sound, but in the Italian rather than English sound. You will hear some PFM and maybe a little Celeste influence although guitar seems more prevalent than keys. Nearly ever-present acoustic guitars are given significant punch via strong bass guitar and good electric leads. Occasional flute adds some nice touches and keyboards as well. “Alder” is a concept album about a fisherman on something of a quest for knowledge and enlightenment. Wisely, they have written the narrative for each piece (song) of the story and translated to English in the booklet so that more people can follow along. This is something I wish more bands would do. I personally prefer bands stay in their first language because the music invariably sounds more natural, but it’s a very nice touch and much appreciated when they take the time to provide some notes or summary in English for others. “A Fisherman” begins with nice acoustic guitar and flute, the chords very dreamy. “that night, when the moon spread out along the water, Alder felt really alone and it was then that the star of many mirrors reflected his dreams.” Such is the beginning of the narrative which lyrically sounds a bit like the concept of a Cat Stevens project. Male vocals soon join and the bass/drums and keys will kick in as it rocks a bit and features a nice electric solo before ending with the acoustic. Most tracks are in the 6-7 minute range and allow time for nice instrumental explorations as they unfold. The typical sound is a middle speed light rock that is kind of foggy and atmospheric. Sometimes a bit Floydish, other times like a less rocking Marillion minus drama-boy singing, other times reminding me of Finistere. There are sections where it’s just acoustic guitar and light keyboards, and other times when the punchy drum/bass sound rock out with electric leads. It’s hard to define them by other bands as their style is just a bit different than the others, more laid back. The last half of the finale “On Tanana Brook” features a fiery (by ESM standards) guitar solo for the big ending. The bonus track is a pleasant memorial to a fallen friend and colleague.

Alder is a good album but I do have a bit of a problem with the sound. I think were it a studio album with much better sound/production I could add another star but much of the nuance is lost in the live mix. Parts are very quiet which make me turn it up to hear them, then it gets loud and murky in other places and you have to babysit the volume. There are parts that would be better if the sound were clearer. It is certainly not horrible and definitely is listenable, but it is not optimal. All in all it is something I enjoy from time to time because of the thoughtful and tasteful playing. Considering this was ’83 when most of prog was on life-support the album really was good for the moment. I give it a reserved thumbs up for Italian fans and pastoral-prog fans.

You're very welcome.

For some reason, the band shows up twice on the "E" alphabtical band lists.

My last ISP/ RPI review is this:

Canti d'innocenza, Canti d'esperienza...

? aka Nico, Gianni, frank, Maurizio then IBIS

Canti d'innocenza, canti d'esperienza - original LP

Canti d'innocenza, canti d'esperienza - Pellicano reissue cover

Italian Symphonic Prog/ Rock Progressivo italiano
(Studio Album, 1973)
Avg: 4.47/5
from 4 ratings
5%20stars My review is produced using this release: VM2000 Records/ BTF CD 094 (Mini LP gatefold sleeve)

Rating: 9/10

Warning: In this LP the name of the band is ? and for label promotion the band was named: Nico, Gianni, Frank, Maurizio

Ibis, or better ? (for label promotional problems: Nico, Gianni, Frank, Maurizio) is the Hard Rock/ Heavy Prog product of the first division of the New Trolls. As in the case of NT Atomic System, the album of ? is a very powerful release. Nico Di Palo manages to create a truly Heavy Prog album (and band) with good songs. Of the 6 songs that composing Canti D'Innocenza, Canti D'esperieza, the best song is surely L'Amico Della porta Accanto: excellent lyrics (about immigration, current theme), Great guitars (aggressive and angry at the right point), good Nico Di Palo's falsetto voice. The only flaw is the keyboard that are inserted forcefully... But this song is a great evergreen of 70's Italian POP... Correctly. The other songs? Well, except the short acoustic ballad Simona (dedicated to the daughter of Nico Di Palo) are extreme Hard Rock/ Heavy prog in the vein of New Trolls. And this description already says it all.

For the more Hard Rock face fans of New Trolls this Canti D'Innocenza, Canti D'esperienza is sure a Must!

Having had experience of teaching Italian to foreigners, I know our language is not easy to learn, but it is very rewarding nonetheless. Where did you learn it? I would like to take up teaching once again when I move to the US - it is something I enjoyed immensely.

4%20stars Hey, these guys are no jokers; they don’t play with the cards… SEMIRAMIS are really powerful and amazing. Could someone believe that many many years ago I disdained “Dedicato A Frazz”? Well, a sad story but I thought initially they were a mere pop band and later some silly soul whispered in my ears that this release was only a kind of jazz jam recording, and then I had to drive my savings to another direction. For my surprise I found them (band & album) here in the Archives and I decided to get this album and… if repent could kill, I’d be died for years. A jaw-breaking experience, believe me!

You’re not supposed to take a rest; all tracks are nervous, explosive, and catchy in the finest progressive vein. Here one will find a cluster of tunes, harmonies, and textures that compose the cream of our beloved genre and most specifically the Italian scenario: a flurry of synths, guitars, drums and vibes working accordingly, supported by non-spoiling vocals. It’s a pity that the production isn’t exempt of flaws and sometimes the sound looks like coming from a distant place, disturbing the hearing a little bit.

The atmosphere settled in the symphonic rock, is completed by jazzy intermezzos, folk touches, classic elements and generous portions of hard-rock which can be easily perceived within the opening track, ‘La bottega del rigattiere’, where quaint intro chords give room to a short folk section soon replaced by mesmerizing tunes, absolutely stunning – you’re picked and starts to salivate just waiting the next song, ‘Luna Park’ that keeps the mood and goes even more frenetic and exquisite.

‘Un zoo di vetro’ starts chilling a bit the overall warmth but immediately the temperature rises again and the seesaw movement persists throughout the track astonishingly. ‘Per una strada affollata’ fastens the bond – you’re definitely imprisoned. ‘Dietro una porta di carta’ brings some of the softer moments in the album, but it’s elusive, the power is still on! ‘Frazz’ and ‘Clown’, the last tracks, summarize everything you heard before and adds even more spices to the dish. And then it’s over and you’ll need a bath to wash out the sweat.

Memorable.

3%20stars I've never seen the movie related to this soundtrack, apparently it's not an other bloody-thriller from Dario Argento but due to the musical score I can easily imagine that Patrick is not a romantic movie. In this release Goblin explores one more time epic creepy-soundscapes but their usual exotic groovy / catchy jazzy sound has almost gone in favour of a more electronic approach. Some pieces remind me late 70s Tangerine Dream's evocative electronic ambiences. Consequently this album is closer to a soundtrack as Buio Omega than something as Profondo Rosso or Suspiria written earlier. According to me Patrick is the creepiest and darkest album written by the band and remains a personal favourite because of the haunted, terror-like atmospheres delivered. The opening theme is a catchy, tense soundscape, for minimal keyboards arpeggios, dramatic synth lines and kitschy epic guitars, this is not very complex but rather efficient. Transmute is a semi-classical interlude for repetitive keyboards, groovy bass exercices and black-like electronic buzz. Vibrazioni is a moody, mini-epic electronic piece which develops a similar theme with the opening composition. Inventive dark ambiences despite that I regret the absence of the jazzy rockin' weirdness of the band. This album prefigures less interesting albums as Tenebre...

Hi friends,

I recently found on cd "Dedicato a..." by the italian mythic band "Le Stelle di Mario Schifano" that can be regarded as the first prog record in the history of italian prog.

The album was issued in 1967 with no overdubs (live in the studio).

Now it's amongst the most wanted and expensive italian vinyl albums nowadays.

Housed in an incredible gatefold cover, painted by Schifano himself, the album contains a side-long improvised track on side 1, with the long title of Le ultime parole di Brandimarte, dall'Orlando Furioso, ospite Peter Hartman e fine (da ascoltare con TV accesa senza volume), a surreal title just like the track itself.

Close to avantgarde, the track gives a good idea of real experimentation whilts side 2 is more conventional, with five short tracks with psych influences.
