they're kinda a mishmash of every style
California's probably their most normal album but it's also my favorite I like the other two though I haven't listened in a while if something's annoying with them take it as tongue in cheek because thats basically how they are |

I personally like Suspended Animation more, but they're mostly in the same vein....although that may not be the best recommendation for someone who doesn't want something "too crazy"

^ Listen to Fantomas, their debut album is - for me - one of the real key albums of Avant-Garde Metal.

I enjoy listening to Mike Patton's projects, especially Mr Bungle and Faith No More (not the most avant-garde but still, Mike Patton) Arcturus are awesome too, and there's a band from the Netherlands called Freak Neil Inc, also, great avant garde metal.I can't really get into "over-psycho" bands like Naked City, or other projects of John Zorn. it's way too much crazy.

I'm going berserk with Arcturus as of late so The Sham Mirrors is a tad cheesy but the vocals and keyboards are epic |

I saw your location days after you changed it. I'll have to think Ivan (Trickster) for showing me this band as well as a couple others that I now highly enjoy. I haven't heard much of this genre, but I'm on it. I've still yet to listen to Unexpected and Ephel Duath, but I'll try to prioritize this. Kudos to Negura Bunget and their stunning 2002 album. |

How strange anyone hasn't mentioned Arcturus, maybe many people had listened to them, but if not, give them a try, and get The Sham Mirrors. Also, should Devil Doll count as Avant-Garde Metal?, they are here in the archives, but under the categorization of Heavy Prog, and I consider them to be much more than only Heavy Prog.

BIG nod towards this band. A minority of people probably noticed from my 'location' and 'sig' I'm a massive fan. I would suggest starting with their album Omnio. Very emotionally power music. Sadly they are mostly unknown here and everywhere. |

Avant metal, whether it be pseudo avant metal or real avant metal (Don't ask me for the difference) is some of my favorite musical styles, period. So much good stuff in the genre, really, the ferocity and technicality combined with the experimental and unique sounds of the avant garde.
Good stuff.
Thanks for the links, Assaf.

I'm disappointed - neither of these players are avant-garde! Al di Meola.
haha i know. but the poll itself is avant-garde
|

I'm ashamed, I forgot Pan-Thy-Monium...
Look for their PA page - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2328
Also, In The Woods have a relation to this style. In any case they're brilliant.
And check out Stolen Babies - http://www.stolenbabiestheband.com/
