The only one I'm really familiar with is Unexpect. I guess I have quite a bit of catching up to do as well.

Kayo Dot and Maudlin of the Well are two of my favourit bands (Leaving Your Body Map and Choirs of the Eye are both in my top 10 of all time albums), just superb. Must try out the bands Jody and Assaf are mentioning.

Ephel Duath is one of the more challenging bands i have listened to. I dont like their screaming style but the clean vocals are nice when used. strange mix of heavy jazz with hardcore styles. not much in common with the bands you've heard, Ian, at least from my perspective. id try out some of the bands assaf listed, though im not as up to date as id like and havnt heard a few of them. (must check out Kekal)

Kayo Dot took a while for me to get into, you sort of have to be in the mood for it
I was wondering if there were any avant-metal bands that keep the METAL aspect in tact, like UneXpect? I LOVE Sleepytime, but they use metal more as a tool to combine with other styles (read: avant-garde) more than as a playing style. edit: also no Ephel Duath, I know of them/Painter's Pallette is pretty good but haven't listened to in a while Edited by heyitsthatguy - January 28 2008 at 21:27 |

Assaf listed some good bands but I really need to second his Kekal suggestion.Their Acidity and The Habit of Fire albums are awesome.
I was recently contacted by Kekal mastermind Jeff Arwadi,he sent me a promo of THoF and also wants me to interview him.Damn nice guy too.

Look at this website:
One has not much to with the other in this case.
Anyway, have you tried Solefald? They're in PA, check them out.

Usually I'm chastised for not like hardcore avant garde and rio acts like: Henry cow, Samla, John Zorn, and some Zappa, but rescently I have found myself adoring the realm of avant metal. In my post rock.metal thread I found myself bragging about too many avant bands, so I decided on making a well deserved thread.
So far in my collection I have:
MotW (barely avant, but great introduction band)
Kayo Dot
SGM
Unexpect
I hope to have this list grow a lot more, though Kayo Dot was a bit too ambient weird for me.
