As an historical aside (and definitely not an attempt get either band recategorised) both Purple and Sabbath received the "progressive" appellation back in the seventies, and both were placed on "progressive" imprints (respectively Harvest and Vertigo) by their record companies. Plus Purple featured a hammond organ player with a magnificent 'tache, which should merit prog points by anybody's criteria.
I suspect what keeps both of them in the prog-related category is that, whilst both were progressive in their own ways, they are more closely identified with hard rock and heavy metal than with prog rock. Which is quite fair enough.

For me "Rock Puzzle" by Atoll. I think when discovering prog I was happy discovering one gem after another. I don't think I checked out a review before I listened to it, which was not my usual procedure. This one was an eighties prog album, which bears a risk in itself  . I just tried it and it was just not my kind of album.

Deep Purple's first four albums are not less progressive than many others released by 'officially' prog bands. Their following albums, at least up to Burn, contain a lot of prog elements as well. However, they bear the tag of a hard rock band, and that is enough for many people to obliterate any progressive aspects in their music.

My all time disappointment would have to be ELP's "Works, pt. 1" fiasco. More recently it would be IQ's "Dark Matter." I bought it based on favorable reviews on this site but even after about 10 listens I still couldn't find a single thing I liked about it. It just left me cold and it now sits at the bottom of my CD stack. I may end up giving it to my son but I don't think he'd like it, either.

Really. I bought it hearing that it was the last of the "Golden Era" albums, and aside from "Awaken" and "Wonderous Stories", I find it bland and repetitive compared to other Yes albums (both before and after). I've given it a few unbiased listens, but I still don't particularly care for it. I personally find Drama and even 90125 to be more interesting and enjoyable (perhaps because they don't have Wakeman on them--I find his keyboard choices questionable beginning with GFTO).

I just... don't get them. There's being artistic, and being entertaining. I'm sure they're very artistic, and complex. But I don't get much entertainment from them.
