Second wave emo is my favorite and was when the bands mellowed out and got artsier. Second wave emo was closer to hard rock and sometimes metal than punk and was very very beautiful. But then you get these modern bands who basically have nothing to do with real emo and they're horrible.

Also, I'd pick any form of real music over rap any day. Evil%20Smile

I have in fact heard many of the second wave emo bands and to be honest, it was still no better than average music to my ears. And yes, the currents "emo" bands are absolutely atrocious and i really would rather listen to the real emo bands. Emo as a genre has had no influence on me as a musician and to be honest, if it never existed, it would never have had much of a difference to many of the musicans on Progarchives. Having said that, if i come across people in the street, i tend to find the "emo" scene kids to be really friendly, caring and have even made friends among them. I am yet to find any "pure rap" people i would like to talk to, because the majority of them seem more interested in graffiting, vandalism and starting fights for no reason. So i think i will finally make my definitive pick and say Emo is better.

Ruben you are not alone. Though I must admit I have not heard any material people would call 'emo', so I cannot comment on the genre. I'd avoided posting in this thread before as there was only one direction it was heading. Over the last two years I have branched out my musical tastes, hip-hop being one of them and haven't regretted it. It started with the avant-garde side of the genre as this is where I felt most culturally at home, and moved on towards the soul/jazz side.

well considering your already dead...

Umm.. 30 Seconds to Mars is ok, and though I dont see the prog connection are a good origional band with mainstream success, somthing that needs to be applauded

and I think I have already talked about alot of the rap bands you mentioned, underground rap/hip-hop is one of my favourite genres.

In closing I would like to point out that Coheed and Cambria, The Dear Hunter, and The Mars Volta,  all stemmed from the "emo" scene, and therfore it cant be all bad.

Oh wow, I am very surprised.
I expected rap to have like 3 times as many votes.
Well, personally I think emo is worse.

I'd say emo, but really, both genres suck. A lot.

I'll say, i never thought that you would like a band with Jared Leto in it. :) Are you sure they are any good? I am very open to all sorts of music, really. I have given up on that "image"-thing, when i only listened to prog and thought i was so cool because i bashed power metal, but i have always thought 30 seconds to mars was aband which got airplay simply because Jared Leto was in it. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, however.

I really enjoy their debut album. Like I said before it reminds me of Post-Rock, Tool and a bit of King Crimson.  I've heard that their second one isn't as good and more commercial than artistic.

I think it's everyones right to say that they don't like a particular genre, even if they have only heard a few mainstream representations of it. If the parameters of that particular genre mean that nothing in it could possibly be enjoyed, then why can't someone say they dismiss it in it's entirety?
I find the fake emo emotion coupled with whiny singers to be intolerable - period.
And most rap, to me, barely qualifies as music. Rythmic poetry by cavemen over a drumbeat maybe, but not music.

In saying that, some "hip hop" is pretty good, e.g. Rjd2, DJ Shadow, Portishead, Massive Attack etc. That, and the fact I hate whiney little teenyboppers, means my vote goes to emo.

I actually like the artsier, more genuine, older, and non-sucky emo (aka the real stuff like Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, Dear Ephesus, etc.).

Rap is completely nonsense to me, not even music to my ears and contains absolutely nothing I can possibly find enjoyable.
