[QUOTE=sinkadotentree]Their last five studio albums are all very good in my opinion. They sure know how to create dark, sad and atmospheric songs, with excellent lyrics.QUOTE]
I share that opinion, though my favorites are A Fine Day to Exit and the excellent Alternative 4.
Yep, I think they are underrated too.

as an Anathema listener (fan once, but not anymore) since their Silent Enigma (1995), i wanna share my thoughts.
maybe some of their works, precisely in last two albums, gives a floydish taste. they have lots of experimental approaches in time. i love Anathema, they are generally very atmospheric, experimental but never prog for me. i never saw a band that changes the genre that much in time.
(i saw them live 6 times. every gig they play "Comfortably Numb" or "Wish You Were Here")
but they are so underrated that they can put this in their website, they must be in hard conditions:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From www.anathema.ws:
anathema release three new songs on i-tunes 18th april anathema will release 3 new songs, on i-tunes in april to coincide with their tour supporting finish goth rockers HIM. the three tracks rumoured to be released are.. 1 one day 2 everything 3 angels walk among us there will be official announcements soon. IMPORTANT! as the band is without a record deal and without any financial backing to record an album, we respectfully ask all our fans to go to the i-tunes site and pay for the songs. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! as you will be directly supporting the band at a difficult time, and your money will go towards paying for anathema to record an album this year. we need your help. if you want to be a true fan and help the band directly, instead of helping record companies... do not copy these songs from your friends! go to i-tunes on april 18th and buy them. the price is very cheap! best wishes anathema --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
we see them on tour in Turkey every year since 2003, at least with 5-6 concerts. if they move to Turkey they will survive |

well, i bought judgement and really enjoyed it. so i decided to buy eternity and alternative 4, but found them somewhat boring. they lacked something that judgement had...i just dont know what.

i was kinda hoping that they'd sign with "Inside Out", i really don't like the musical direction of several bands that they seemed to take after joining "Roadrunner"

love Anathema, Judgement, Alternative 4, A Fine Day To Exit and A Natural Disaster are beautiful albums...i don't think Roadrunner will change Anathema musical direction, maybee they can do it with some bands, but i think Anathema is very personal

check out yet another new song "Hindsight" from the upcoming album performed live on the following links (different versions): Personally i really liked alot, somehow it reminded me of Dark Side of the Moon-era of Pink Floyd, & i can also feel a little bit of "Judgement" in there (say 2000 & gone?)
your thoughts?

On Wikipedia it says that they announced during a concert that Steven Wilson would produce their new album! It also says that recording would start this month!

Presuming that it's true, that's very welcome news indeed. They are a fine band, and it's a shame they aren't more widely appreciated. I've always felt that one of Anathema's problems (commercially, not artistically) was that they couldn't be easily pigeonholed into a single genre niche.

I got Judgement around 6 months ago.
It's pretty good atmospheric Metal with a very depressed/melancholic feel to it. 3 Stars if i remember right.
Might get more from this band, any recommendations?

I don't find them underrated at all, they are very much appreciated, especially in TURKEY where they are very very big.

A Fine Day to Exit (2001) and A Natural Disaster (2003) further develop the new style first established on Judgement, and most befit the Radiohead/Pink Floyd comparisons. They're the natural recommendation to a fellow prog rocker. |

Then problem with Anathema is that people aren't use to hear bands that don't have a very familiar sound. Anathema do things diferently in every album making new people like them and other people hate it. In my opinion Anathema is a great band that offers something unique by makes every album have a diferent and unique sound. As for me Judgment it's my favorite followed by Alternative 4.

I have every album by this band and love them all. Especially "Serenades" and "A Natural Disaster". Looking forward to the newest one, also!

I actually think they're overrated... I just can't get into their music... believe I'm tried... not a bad band but nothing extraordinaire
