This "Cyberpunk" label seems to me pretty much like "Alter Wein in neuen Schluchen" ("old wine in new skins"), meaning it is nothing but a marketing label. These kind of dystopian scenarios have been around a long time before Gibson and his Neuromancer (which is very overrated as a book, by the way; I read it and did not find it remarkable at all). Stanislaw Lem preceded him by a decade at least. Philip K. Dick was ahead of him too.

So far, I think cyberpunk is some sort of mixture between ruined, rusted future, with humanity turned into scavengers, 80's hair, 80's look; but then again, people say that Ghost in the shell also fits... subgenres are fiction anyway.

Cyberpunk movies are generally post 70s by the way. The vibe I get from it reminds me a lot of laser tag. It's got that whole rebel, hacker, neon-drenched vibe to it. Definitely technology-based. The best examples I think are Hackers, Johnny Mnemonic (going by a few minute of it), and The Matrix, though there's no laser tag in that one.

Quatermass, The Day of The Triffids, Flash Gordon (ahem), and of course, the proggiest film of all time, the legendary Tron.

Would you like to watch TV, or get between the sheets, or contemplate the silent freeway, would you like something to eat?

I know it's a series rather than a movie but what about Blake's Seven?

I need to check this show out, as well as Doctor Who. So far the only SF show I watch is the genius remake of BSG (and Heroes if you count all that genetic talk as sci-fi).

Don't forget the legendary German SF-series "Raumpatrouille" ("Space Patrol"). It had only seven episodes, but there have been numerous reruns of it. I am too young to have seen it the first time around, but I saw the reruns several times. Great stuff!

While talking about TV programs, I have to mention the X files... which are good, but I think they aren´t that good now, looking back I mean. For sure in it´s days they seemed much better

Red Dwarf's a comedy set in space. hilarious at times, but it won't sate your science-fiction fandom

Dude. Wouldn't Science Fiction mean FICTION with SCIENCE elements? And Terminator is certainly that, since it explores Science, and the idea of it taking over the world from humans. Oaky, maybe it would be more fitting with "Tech fiction", in a way. But it's still science fiction.

sure, "Terminator" definitely falls under the SF-moniker. and as far as I know nobody denied that so far.
by the way: how about "Flesh Gordon", a porn-SF-movie and a parody of "Flash Gordon". there are a lot of scenes which are being copied from the original "Flash Gordon", but given a sexual treatment. lots of nudity in that movie; try to get an uncensored version of it

Unless I missed it I`m suprised nobody has mentioned Heavy Metal. The second one sucked but the first one is classic.

Yeah it never really caught on in North America. Sort of like Monty Python didn`t catch on. I like the earlier episodes a lot more though. Read the books before the show came out, it`s sort of Dr. Who meets Hitchiker`s Guide To The Galaxy.
There`s also an old British show I used to watch as a kid called UFO. Anyone remember that with the babes with the purple hair?
I also love the great Gazzoo in the Flinstones and Marvin the Martian from looney tunes " The Earth is blocking my view of Mercury so I`ll have to blow it up. " Bugs Bunny saves the world, too funny.

Well, someone called it an action movie set in a definite time period, so i got kinda defensive. :)

Well, it is an action movie set into a certain period. Many SF-movies are actually action movies too. "Robo-Cop", for example. Or "Total Recall". The two terms don't necessarily exclude each other.

Before i add mine...i see no one raised an eyebrow at Jason and the Argonauts? Greek mythology me thinks, not sci-fi.
Aliens is surely the greatest sci-fi movie ever, however for every good sci-fi movie there has been about 100 hundred bad ones......stand up Thunderbirds and Gattaca.
