As an old fogey I can't say I know what the hell this "emo" stuff is but I really can't imagine anything more degrading, unmusical and unprogressive as rap. If it is then I hope I never hear it.

30 Seconds To Mars is a good Emo band and so far its the one that made me interested in the genre (at least the modern one). Their debut album does have some prog influences particularly from Tool, Pink Floyd and King Crimson to a lesser extent. There's a bit of Post-Rock thrown in there too.
Highly recommended if you're a fan of bands like Oceansize, Dredg, The Amber Light, Pure Reason Revolution, Muse and others like that.
I heard that their follow-up is less creative than their debut so try to avoid it.

From what I heard, I don't think 30 Seconds To Mars is emo at all. They're just alternative.

They seem pretty emo to me, specially on their latest album. But in their debut album it isn't too noticeable except for Leto's vocal style.

the commercial versions of both suck, but emo gave us Coheed and Cambria, Dearhunter, and to a lesser extent The Mars Volta, and so is rediemed. However I find that uncomercial Hip-Hop is more interesting, just listen to Madlib.

Just went to Madlib's myspace page. It sounds really great...he's collaborated with MFDoom and J. Dilla, so he must be awesome.

Rap... I like the political lyrics but the rhythm bord me after 30 seconds... Emo rock is awful too but at least has some creativity...

You should check out his MF Doom collaboration, "Madvillain", ASAP if you haven't already. It's one of my favorite Hip-hop albums. Though having short songs, the flow and feel of the album is simply perfect.

If you like Jazzy Hip Hop, I highly recommend the Blue Scholars.
Their 2007 release, Bayani is one of my favorite releases this year.
If you want something more varied, try Blackalicious or K'naan.

They're tied, leave it. Both are terrible for the most part, rap has some alright guys like A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, emo is better overall than rap, but it has no artists that redeem it. I'm sorry, 30 Seconds and At the Drive-In suck. The best emo song is I Walk Beside You by Dream Theater.

I Walk Beside you is normally the track i skip on Octavarium.
And yes, may as well leave it both emo and rap as equally as horrendous crimes against music

No it exists and it is terrible. Atmosphere, RJD2, Aesop Rock....not one in the bunch I like. But the jazzy hip-hop concept intrigues me.

Not everything is terrible what is rap or related.
The bands I have heard classified as emo are utterly horrendous. Tokio Hotel and a Hungainan group, No Thankx. The name of the latter says all.

I'll say, i never thought that you would like a band with Jared Leto in it. :) Are you sure they are any good? I am very open to all sorts of music, really. I have given up on that "image"-thing, when i only listened to prog and thought i was so cool because i bashed power metal, but i have always thought 30 seconds to mars was aband which got airplay simply because Jared Leto was in it. I'd be happy to be proven wrong, however.

^^ Oh come on, rap had the prestige of having "FIDDYSENT" among its ranks, you know, the guy that has that really cool song where he raps about being overly materialistic, hoes, violence and bling. Yeah, i'm sure people know that song i'm talking about.

Hm. I'm torn. The worst of rap (especially anything played on Radio One) is entirely unlistenable. I generally don't like the genre. However, emo rock has produced absolutely nothing that I like, while I've heard a couple of more considered rap pieces that I actually have warmed up to. No idea what they are, but they were OKish...
Emo "Rock" gets the vote.

Well, now that I think of it.
Rap and Hip hop are completely seperate things.
Hip Hop is the sh*t you hear on the radio, complete with pimps and ho's, and goofy sounds to make a rythym.
Rap is The hardcore songwriting with very little backround noise to distract from the lyrics, featring groups like Immortal technique and Jedi Mind tricks.
I dont like either groups, but there is a lot more respect in respect in rap than hip hop.
