Probably it will never really heapen, but just imagine :
Genesis will reunite in classic line-up with Peter and Steve and record new studio album. What music would you expect?
IMO hard to say, I would expect something much better than Genesis' output in the 90's due to presence of both Peter and Steve. But I don't think the Lamb would lie down on Brodway again.
Your opinions?
Mostly it's impossible to win the fight against stupidity. But always it's necessary to attempt it.

Well if you didn't know, Gabriel and Hackett were scheduled to be in the reunion tour, but Gabriel backed out last minute because "it was becoming too big".
They were actually confirmed to perform The Lamb in all of it's entirety.

All us Gabriel-era fans are left with, is Gabriel saying himself that there is a chance it will happen in the future.

I forgot that I'm kind of retarded and I didn't read the whole post.
Clap

I thought you said "If they went on tour - what kind of music would they play?"

we can always dream can't we... Disapprove

i suggest that we all rely on the prog bands of the future, i.e. Porcupine Tree, Flower Kings, Oceansize, Dream Theatre, Spock's Beard, Mars Volta, Tool... The classic prog era is well and truly over and probably never will be successful again. But boy, what an era it was, eh?

Everyone from the Gabriel era has come a long way musically since they played "The Lamb" Peter with his world music, Steve with all his solo stuff, the rest of Genesis with their pop, I am assuming it would still be relatively poppy but since it IS Genesis, is would have the beautiful merging of pop and prog - I.E. "The Carpet Crawlers" and the like.
I would love to hear it!

I'm sorry, this is a bit off topic but, why did they want to do all the songs from "The Lamb?" This is just my opinion, but I think that playing the whole Selling England By The Pound or FOXTROT would be a much better idea. Foxtrot is a true masterpiece with NO fillers, the album is clearly perfect. The Lamb is good as well, but it's so LONG and if they played the whole album, there wouldn't be much room left for other songs.
Although, I don't _really_ give a sh*t about the album they would play - if they EVER reunite and go on tour, I will definitely be there no matter what!!
And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away
in the tidal destruction the moral melee.

If they reformed and made a new album, I would expect it to be quite accessable, but certainly nowehere near as commercial as their 80's output. I like to think that Banks has come off his power trip and would allow Hackett to input some meaningful ideas, and I would imagine they would let Phil loose on the mic for at least one love song. Overall I would expect a thoughtful, well produced art rock album with some tasteful pop leanings.

I'm going to have to agree...these reunion tours are really testament to Zappa's (or is it an eponymous notion?) of Death by Nostalgia.  Next up are ELP I remember reading on progressiveears...whom should stay dead - don't get me started; they have tops 8 good songs, the rest I believe to be unmitigated trash.  There's no reason for these bands to return if they don't have something new or different to offer IMO...but monetary concerns and a blind indolent status quo prevails...to which, opportunity knocking, they can all enjoy in their collective relived heydays.  I's got other interests I suppose.

I have to disagree.  For fans who grew up or had a chance to see Genesis during their golden years, this is easy to say.  However, for those of us who were born long after, it would be amazing to see the lineup that we never had a chance to see.

I dont think they will make a studio album.  Same about Yes.  They probably will make some nostalgia concert (or/and a tour) and nothing more.  But the thing is going to sound like the old days?  I dont think so.  In the other hand I have to agree with Endless Wire about ppl who never had a chance to see those guys during their better days.

The Lamb doesn't have any filler, either... perhaps you missed the point of several songs.

Whose to say Genesis will be anything like that? I think they'd be above that, seeing as they all never had a fall and and still like each other. And also, I still believe that if Banks/Rutherford/Collins really tried, they could come up with something good, and we know that Gabriel and Hackett could create great stuff. What would it sound like? Hmm... I think it'd be different then anything else they've released, and would have a lot more focus on shorter, well made songs with a lot of small details to fill out the sound, rather then the longer songs.

These reunions are just for old burnt out artists who are addicted to money. I would seriously hope that Gabriel doesn`t become inflicted with this disease. Led Zeppelin, while their reunion served a just cause, looked and sounded dated. Gabriel`s solo work wouldn`t mean as much to me if he succumbed to this disease.

I don't know if everyone of the classic Genesis camp will be able to get along now that they're all so different.

I think that it would be a very bizarre output. Banks confessed in the eighties that he loathed playing long and difficult pieces such as Fountains of Salmacis and In The Cage. Rutherford has become a very pompous and controlling musician, as has Collins, and Gabriel's just a completely different man musically. Having said all that- it would f***ing rule!

It was becoming "too big?" I am as ravenous a Gabriel freak as they get, but dammit if his stubborness and inability to embrace the glory of his Genesis days doesn't irk me something fierce. "Too big"? Does that mean he'll only do it if it's at a wedding? What else could one conceivably envision for Genesis?

Don't forget about The Watch. They are a very talented lot. They write music in the vein of Genesis, but clone or no, they do it with class and authenticity. Old style prog need not be considered dead. Wobbler is another great example. Musicians just need to want to play music that is authentic, utilizes a similar tonal palette as those old bands and lacks all the revival tent preaching and or suicidal drab of modern prog.
I'm sorry to admit that 70s analog keyboards sound more pure and wonderful to my ear than the over produced pads of today.

Led Zeppelin, while their reunion served a just cause, looked and sounded dated. From what I heard and saw I have to disagree: They sounded quite fresh to my ears. Even powerful. Maybe they're not setting sail to new courses, but I can live with that. They are a legend and legends deserve to live on success achieved in the past.
Gabriel`s solo work wouldn`t mean as much to me if he succumbed to this disease. That I don't understand at all. Maybe you'd lose your esteem for the man, but in what way does that have to do with the fantastic music he made/makes? While I can accept that you wouldn't want to see a Genesis-reunion, how could it spoil Gabriel's solo work? Even if Genesis reunited and put out a bad album, The Lamb, Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme will always be outstanding as would be Gabriel's efforts.

Genesis produced masterpieces in the 70s. Much like  a great literey writer who turns to writing magazine pieces to make a living they all churned out pop from the late 70s . Magazine reading is enjoyable in it's own way too but cannot compare with the great works of literature.

Now I say although the old band dynamic is lost , the times have changed , the fans have changed , the instruments have changed , the industry has changed and they themselves have changed  why not have  a crack at another masterpiece. If they succeed they will forever add to their glorius catalogue and if they fail they will fail at least fail while daring greatly.
How wonderful to be so profound
