Erik - suggestion: change the thread title to "Lesser known and
unknown" - "Lesser and unknown" has a slightly different meaning in
English.
Further: have I suggested J'Accuse (debut album and PA inclusion pending in January), La Seconda Eclisse (album available for download) and Phenom (Neo from India, album available for download)? If not - now I have. Enjoy them! And William Gray is on my wishlist - has been since I allowed Tony to have Hans' last copy at the Progwalhalla evening in September. |

Y're welcome Tony, I'll get the album soon enough.
Different note: I added Bootcut today, and because Erik's not here now I also got the honour of posting the first review for their album De Fluff. That really made my day |

Though it is not lesser known in Japan but maybe TorN is unknown to proggers outside of Japan.
Recently many Japanese proggers became to notice this group because they released first full-length album. And they will appear in the concert of Anekdoten in January 2008. This news made many proggers what was TorN. (Also Presence of Soul, Gonin-ish (五人一首) and Kara (殻) will join in this live)
TorN was formed in May 2004 and made their debut single in August 2004. Unfortunately most of proggers didn't know this debut in real time. Of course, I didn't notice them.
At last, they released one new single, one remastered single and one album from Arcangelo in 2007. Of course, Disk Union strongly recommended this group. TorN was known group in heavy metal and hard rock music fans before this year releases. But finally they became to be familiar with proggers.
Their music is, so to say, female singer is somewhat close to Koda Kumi (Japanese popular singer), also instrumental section reminds me of Anekdoten.
I suppose progressive hard rock fans become the most positive listeners.

Honganji, thanks for your contribution, can I compare TorN with bands like Starless? Angelo, it's good to see Bootcut on Prog Archives, I remember vividly that we were both watching this band during the Symforce Festival gig and delighted about their performance, my review will follow soon but it's not the first one I noticed on the homepage (nice effort, chap )! About the title of this thread, since a few months I speak about Lesser Known And Unknown New progrock bands, I will also change it in the title, thanks for the advise. |

Hi erik
Starless is closer to Novela than Anekdoten. But TorN is closer to Anekdoten than Novela. This is the difference between the two bands.
Unfortunately I can't find any shops selling their first album outside of Japan. But here in Japan, HMV, Tower Records, Amazon, etc sell and ship internationally. (Merurido, World Disque, Disk Union don't ship outside of Japan)

Hello Honganji.
OK, now I have the idea that TorN is more interesting for me than Starless ever was !
Any other recommendations for this die-hard symphomaniac?

Hi erik
Ummm, you know most of symphonic rock from European and American countries. So I have to find out from Asian and African countries. Especially non-alphabetical countries (Japan, Korea, China, Arabian countries, Thailand, etc) are hopeful. However I can't immediately suggest any good bands.
Do you know Erwin Gutawa of Indonesia? He released an interesting album like Concerto Grosso in 2006. The title is Rockestra.
<---Erwin Gutawa / Rockestra
He may be popular in Indonesian. However sadly most of proggers know very little information about Indonesian music scene. I own only some albums of Chrisye, Discus, Anane, Cozy Street Corner, Erwin Gutawa, Imanissimo, In Memorium, Dewa, Krakatau, Karimata, Gong 2000, Nerv, Yockie, etc....

The Magrathea cover is rather ugly, hope that the music isn't so.

Well Norbert, I just received the parcel from Progwalhalla Hans and ... this evening I will watch two DVD's by your fellow countrymen from Solaris entitled Archiv Videok and Nostradamus (CD/DVD) Live In Mexico (2004). Unfortunately their website doesn't function so I cannot add these DVD's to Prog Archives, I have no information about the tracklists of both DVD's ...

Due to several developments on Prog Archives the last two years, I have decided to stop my activities for Prog Archives for some time, at this moment I miss the motivation to be active on the Forum and to write reviews, perhaps this will change after a break, I don't know, good luck and thanks for supporting my threads and for the compliments for my reviews

^That's crap - but if it's necessary, take a break. Enjoy it! I'll see you on Feb 2, and I'll be tracking the inclusion of the bands we discussed until all are dealt with in whatever way things move.

Not surprised. This site has been becoming the Post-rock, Post-Metal, prog-metal, expiremental/RIO focused site since 2006. When Kayo Dot won "Best album of the Year" for 2006 by the administrators, I knew there was a SERIOUS problem with the people running this site. All these genres are overdone. Eclectic prog?? Tech/Extreme Metal?? Crossover prog??!?!? Seriously? Guys, this site is about the MUSIC. If I am into the Moody Blues, there is NO WAY I would tell someone that they are "Crossover Prog".
Ever since 2006 I have found less and less interest in coming to this site. When you can run Erik off of this site, you guys should really look at yourselves and wonder what is wrong. Something needs to change at this site. It's going downhill.

Hope you got a point in what you mean, cause all I see is a bit of rage coming from Erik, who you admire and like, leaving... If you're unsatisfied - about Kayo Dot being the Collaborators Best Album in 2006 (?!) - about genres being overdone - about the existence of Eclectic Prog - about the existence of Tech/Extreme Metal (what about the other Metal genres?!) - about the existence of Crossover Prog - about how music is thought in relation to genres - that Erik's leave is the collaborator's fault (!) - about what direction the site has I suggest you properly express and turn them up for debate. Otherwise, other colleagues,as you can see, have "dealt" much more calmly with Erik's announcement, without even a word of spontaneously errupted criticism. |

Thanks Rico for replying. First of all, I have many points I would like to make but I know this is not the correct thread to address them all. My main point is that something is very wrong with the site and/or with some collaborators and/or administrators if Erik is forced off the site. In my opinion, he is dedicated to the MUSIC and NOT this site. Nothing wrong with being dedicated to the site but I think some admins are overdoing it with many aspects of this site. I realize nobody made him leave but he mentioned that for the past couple years he has noticed developments on this site that have caused him to lose interest. Obviously he is not talking about losing interest in prog music, but in this site. I am also in the same boat so to speak. I feel that many things with this site are causing true, die hard symphonic prog fans (and others) to lose interest. I personally used to enjoy submitting new bands for approval as well as sending in mp3s and writing reviews and rating albums. In the past couple years though, the everyday non-collaborator (and in Eriks case, even some collabs) has been pushed aside and shunned. As a non-collaborator, my ratings are undervalued and my submissions are a low priority. Also, all the new genres are ridiculous. Why cant the Moody Blues or Supertramp just be Progressive Pop-Rock? Why Crossover Prog? What is that? Nobody except for those at this site would know what Crossover Prog means. Thats just one example of the new genres being way too difficult to understand. Eclectic prog? Again, its a made-up title that means nothing to anybody, even progressive rock veterans unless they go and read the definition and even then, its up for interpretation, even among the admins! I understand that if you have only a few genres that you will have thousands of bands under one genre that may be different sounding than another but even VDGG sounds different than Gentle Giant though they are both considered Eclectic Prog. Lastly, if somebody was to send in a request for a band submission and has to choose the bands genre, its very difficult to choose which is correct. If the admins disagree with the submitter (and many times even themselves), WHY do you REJECT the submission just because you disagree with the requested genre!?!?! Cant you just accept the submission under a genre of the admins choice instead of total rejection? I understand if you think the band is not prog in any way, but if you decide they are prog but not in the requested genre, the band should be accepted into a genre of the admins choice. Not simply rejected. |
